Who counts " housework" as excerise calories?

I've been cleaning all day and Im exhausted. I feel as if I burn alot of calories today. Do you count them?

  • I think you should include them if it is outside your "normal" daily level of activity. Cleaning can be some SERIOUS work!

    I do because honestly, I only do one mega cleaning a week:blushing: If you clean everyday, then it wouldn't be counted.

    Now that you have finished yours, wanna clean mine:tongue:

    I depends on if it the everyday cleaning then no, but if it is a heavy cleaning like moving everything cleaning closets, washing windows..YES
  • Yes I do. But only if I do it for more than an hour vigorously and not as my only exercise. Dusting is great but vacuuming, mopping, picking things up is the real workout!

    I only count what exceeds my normal activity level. For example, I count gardening as an exercise because it makes me sweat!

    Yes but only if it's out of the ordinary. Basically- if it tires me out, I count it.

    If you don't have a HRM try this site 'http://www.healthdiscovery.net/links/calculators/calorie_calculator.htm' tells you how many cals.
  • i definitely count my major cleaning sprees as exercise. i'm about to go vacuum and mop my entire main floor, clean 2 bathrooms and vacuum the basement. you better believe i'll be counting that cause i know i'll break a sweat!
  • Funny you should ask that...I added cleaning to my exercise list yesterday. I felt kinda dumb putting it down but calories burned are calories burned! :)

    Believe me I worked like an ol dog today. Im so tired Im gone numb. Started at 10am break for lunch for one hour and again for another hour and half. So thats 3 1/2 hours cleaning, like scrubbing walls, vaccumming, dusting. Im for hire if you want me....lol!

    I don't clean every single day so I ALWAYS count them :)

    I think we're all in agreement. Also, I don't count my house (since I live alone), but, when I go visit my husband and kids (it's a work related dislocation, and totally sucks), I count cleaning their house... Cleaning mine is normal daily stuff....

    I tried it...and decided against it. MFP said I burned over 1000 calories doing 6 hours of cleaning...it might have been true...I was REALLY cleaning...scrubbing, steam cleaning carpet, etc. But later I totally used those 1000 calories as an excuse to pig out on pizza....because I had cleaning, + zumba, + my walk that day...so MFP was showing I had like 2500 extra calories I could eat for the day. I dunno...it weird me out, like I'm cheating or abusing the system, so I decided not to count anything unless its a separate planned workout. lol

    I only count the excessively heavy cleaning... like moving things around. Yesterday I cleaned my garage out and was hauling boxes etc. House cleaning, I try not to because I don't count it as formal exercise. That's not to say it isn't formal exercise but I clean everyday (and typically do one really big clean on a weekly basis) and I therefore count it as a regular activity that my body is used to. If you can take a walk or do an exercise DVD as well then heck, that's great! Extra extra calorie burn!
