when to protein up?

So I am new to the concept of supliments, but I need to supliment to get the amount of protein that P90X suggests. Is it best to drink the protein shake before or after I work out?

  Post workout definitely, but every meal should have lean protein, not just one.

  It is my understanding that a protein shake in the morning for breakfast is key.
