I struggle a lot with self control too. That's why I never buy unhealthy food when I go grocery shopping so I won't be tempted.

I do wish it was easy! I'm also a junk food junkie.
I just started so I'm trying to make small goals first because every time I try to go healthy I just go off track.
Right now I'm trying to journal and just stay within my calories!

    Good luck to you!
Going healthy is my ultimate goal :)

I am a sweetaholic, mostly cakes/pies/cookies! and my sister turned me on to a natural inhibitor to nip that sweet tooth! So I get 2 for 1.

I have a really hard time with carbs.. especially pasta... My favorite is pasta with melted cheese on top... so heavy!.. Anyways... like someone already said.. I try not to have "temptation" foods in my house at all, but sometimes that doesn't stop me from whipping up some whole wheat pasta with low fat cheese either... still not a substancial snack.... so when you get a sweet tooth, totally try some Extra Sugar Free Desserts gum, they have Strawberry Shortcake, Key Lime Pie and Chocolate Mint Chip....Also.. I don't think that the portion control is the main issue.. If you limit yourself to one hershey's kiss when you have a chocolate craving, you are really doing any damage, it's when you end up eating the whole bag in one sitting that becomes the issue.... Good luck with your junk foods... Try making some snacks that are low calorie.... that helps too...!!!! You are not alone in this battle!!!!

If cravings lead to binges then allow yourself some. Occasionally and in moderation. Find something that you can substitute the chocolate icecream with. I accidentally froze a chocolate mousse the other day, after taking it out and letting it defrost a little is was pretty good and only comes in at around 100 calories, 1 little pot removes the temptation to eat a whole tub but it may be enough to kill the craving.

I build chocolate wafers in to my diet to cope with chocolate cravings - only 82 calories and have quavers for when I want salty crunchy junk - 87 calories. Doing this has made temptation easier to resist. I believe the biggest diet breaker is the feeling of deprivation and I cannot afford to fail at this, its working for me

I eat everything these days but in moderation. I just opened a small bag of chips equivalent to 100 cals. Shared with all my colleagues and ultimately what I had was just 25 cals. My craving is gone too :) But I agree its not so easy always.

Have everything in moderation and take your time, after the first bite your craving is reduced. So take your time in eating something. Going for walks also helps. And eat something filling before you go grocery shopping, then you might not pick the unhealthy stuff.
  • It's weird, to me nutrition is simple to follow. I have pretty ridiculous willpower though, maybe that's it. For me the hard part is waiting. I know in a year I'm going to be pretty shredded but It's hard taking it one day at a time to get to that goal.

I don't do well with anything that requires WILLPOWER or having to "give up" something.
So I didn't forbid myself any foods whatsoever - I just try to keep around my calorie goal.

It actually happens that when you CAN eat whatever you want (just not as much as you want :)) - you actually tend to go for healthier choices anyway at some point. When nothing is forbbiden it is not as tempting!

I totally agree with stella77. When you tell yourself you can't have something you just end up craving it even more. However if you say to yourself "If I REALLY REALLY want this, I can have it" but then make sure to have a smaller portion than you used to, that seems to work really well for a lot of people. After all, this is a lifestyle change. And who wants to live for the rest of your life without things like ice cream or cake? lol The key is to slowly change your diet to a healthier diet but slowly fazing out the unhealthy stuff and adding more healthy foods. Remember, this is a marathon, not sprint! I wish you luck on your journey, sweetie! :D

Everyone has very useful advice - the big one for most of us (of the non-iron willpower ilk) is the feeling of deprivation - if you can have a wee bit of the things you CRAVE - by all means, find a way to make it fit into your calorie count and give yourself treats now and again.

If you are trying to ditch soda - might I suggest sparkling water? Throw in a dash of lemon or lime juice (or any juice really) and you still get the fizzy, and a touch of flavor without nearly as many calories or all that stuff that makes it so unhealthy. ^_^

..Oh, and part of what makes this health/fitness as a sustainable lifestyle such an awesome achievement is that it IS a lot of work. That you are here and doing it is a HUGE step. Work is inevitably involved in the things that we tend to want.

    You can do this!

it's not easy at all. it took me along time to give up soda and chips, but even now I have them once in a while. Usually I tell myself I can't have them unless I'm eating out or at a party. But now I find that I like them in small quantities and even now not that often.

My tip, don't buy them during your grocery shopping. If their not in the house your less likely to eat them. Or if you are going too buy the small bag.

i know some people can cut things out they love completely and never go back. I'm not one of them, don't plan on being one either. I only have one life and i want to enjoy it. what I will do is portion control ( and I'm still struggling with this one) and not beat myself up too much if I fall off the wagon, you just have to get back on it.
  • In the very soulful words of Norah Jones: "I've seen people try to change and I know it isn't easy but nothing worth the time ever really is."

You can do it - keep up the good work :)

Just to let you know, it DOES get easier. I used to have a serious problem with sweets (I live around the corner from an amazing donut shop). One of the more interesting things that I've found after only a couple months into this is that my body is far more sensitive to sugar than it used to be. For instance, I had a donut last week. Felt like a donut, logged it, didn't stress over it, didn't feel guilty, however, I did end up feeling sick to my stomach shortly after eating it. You'll probably find that the healthier you are the more your body will reject excess amounts of things that are bad for you.

sjaudio, the same thing happened to me when i gave into a french fry craving. i had a good helping at work, then several hours later, i had such terrible stomach cramps i thought i was going to puke. ugh. i was big into all things unhealthy, sweet, salty, whatever, and i totally agree with the previous posts in saying that deprivation is not the way. i tried Atkins back in college, and all i could think about was the stuff i wasn't allowed to have. i promptly lost weight, but of course gained it all back once i stopped. i don't think i could live without ice cream, so instead of going for a big bowl, i've been semi-addicted to the Blue Bunny personals frozen yogurts. they're only 120 calories and are a perfect single serving. i've found over time it DOES get easier, and when your eating habits change, your taste probably will also.

    LoL
    I feel the same way!
Might also be that it has become a habit for me already and my body is accustomed to it. I don't have cravings often so I don't think it's willpower. I usually just accomodate them if I have room for them and adjust my food diary. I am a die hard pragmatist about this though.. What I am dreading is switching to maintenance calories. That will be a shock! :ohwell:

    Ps.
There is also that for some reason males don't seem to have nearly as much cravings for sweets as girls do..

I to use to have that problem! Needed to change my thinking! To achieve any goal you need to decide if it is really important to you?
Any thing worth having takes willpower, dedication & sacrifice....In the end you appreciate more. Find another outlet other then food when stressed or depressed! [walking, game, book, etc.]
Excuses are always easy to find when things are not going your way! You have to decide if "HEALTHY LIFESTYLE" of eating and living are important for yourself, family, friends,& long term goals....You can do this!!!!! 90% mental & 10% doing it!..
Don't take the easy way out...in the long term you will be grateful you did! Congrats on losing 2lbs....you already have a great start!!!

This is me too. I allow myself a treat (if not 2) a day. I stay within my calories and it stops me from binging.
I'm not sure where you are, but in the UK I buy skinny cow triple chocolate icecream sticks. They a re really good size portion, taste wonderful and only have 87calories.

Ditto. I know don't have many pounds left to lose, but knowing I am so close, I am being very impatient. I hate waiting. I've always hated waiting. It's worth it though.

I don't have issues with cravings. I have very good self control and keeping 100 calorie packs are great in case I have one of those crazy cravings, but those are rare. I've had those packs for about 2 months. Also, allowing once cheat meal a week helps me a lot. I know when Saturday comes rolling around I can have that little cheat meal, not too bad, but something I wouldn't eat every day. Keeps me sane.

I was a stress eater. Conquering this issue made my weight loss journey a success. No doubt in my mind. YOU CAN BEAT IT, TOO!

Please read my posts titled "what I've learned since 2007". I think we may have a lot in common :)

Find yourself some low calorie substitues. There are so many options in the shops there's no need to deprive yourself. And its amazing how quickly you get to like the replacement.

    EG

shop bought southern fried chicken, instead of KFC
    Oven chips, instead of fries
weight watches chocolate ice stick, instead of full fat choc ice
weight watchers cheesy puffs, instead of full fat cheese crisps

You can even have a delicious burger either made yourself or bought that is made with less fat. Just dont have the bun!

The only thing I cant find a sub for is WINE!!!

    Good luck :flowerforyou:
