Getting enough calories after oral surgery

I'm having my wisdom teeth removed tomorrow morning, and have been advised by the oral surgeon to not eat solid foods for a week. I've intentionally gone over my calorie goal yesterday and will again today (I'm in Japan--still have 8 hours until I have to start fasting)...but I need help on figuring out how to get enough nutrients/calories when I can't eat real food. Obviously broth won't give me enough. Any ideas?

Thanks so much!

Ensure and Boost were recommended to me once I could eat following my cancer surgery (oral cancer...and nope I don't smoke, don't chew, and drink in moderation....). I'm about 2 weeks post-radiation and have been relying on my g-tube for about 5 weeks. Yep, that's right. 5+ weeks of feeding myself through a tube straight into my stomach. So trust me, it could be worse. I'd just say eat whatever you can physically tolerate. Pudding, Jell-o, pureed vegetables, etc.??

Oh my stars! I hope you're healed quickly! It could always be worse...thank you for putting this into perspective for me!

When I had mine done, I ended up with things like noodles, jellos, smoothies, mashed potatoes, and eventually was able to add scrambled eggs to the mix. Took a while before it could get more solid for me, but just do what you can tolerate, and you'll make it :)

I agree with the Ensure and Boost. You could also try some vegetable puree soups maybe?

Thanks! My surgery was in July, I lost 17 pounds during my 8 day hospital stay, and just as I started to feel like myself again after surgery (~8 weeks) I started radiation. After about 3 weeks of radiation my mouth became just covered and raw with sores, my saliva was so thick it would just hang out of my mouth when I tried to spit, and I was constantly gagging on this thick phlegm that was ever-present in my throat.

Sorry, I don't mean to derail your thread or get all "woe-is-me-sob-story." A dear friend of mine just had her wisdom teeth pulled. Obviously everyone is different but she was eating "real" food again after about 4-5 days. Before that it was just liquids or soft food.

Don't be afraid to take pain pills straight away too. In my experience it's easier to manage the pain from the get go than it is once the pain has started to rear its ugly head.

For a week, I wouldn't be concerned. Just get as many calories as you can. Consider whey protein shakes, but only as an additional food. Those do not provide much in the form of micros or fats. Also, whole milk.

It's been about 15 years since I had my wisdom teeth out, and I had all 4 cut out at the same time. I don't remember taking a whole week off solid foods though. I remember not being able to use a straw for a little while because of the stitches though. But just because you can't chew it, doesn't mean you can't eat. Go for soups, mashed potatoes, and it may sound weird, but baby food is even an option. I would go for the Ensure or Boost for sure to help you get your nutrients. And just take it one day at a time. Good luck, and speedy recovery.

I just had oral surgery, and got my calories in by very very soft fruits and veggies, juice, milk, mac 'n cheese, soups, mashed potatoes and the like. Tofu and eggs for protien were great, not hard to eat after all the anesthetics wore off.

Aaah, oral surgery one christmas...just lay a piece of ham on your tongue and wait til the taste is gone and then flip it over and repeat, ha! HAPPY HOLIDAYS.

Oh yeh, and with all the drugs you wont feel hungry...much.

But enjoy the effortless weightloss and shrinking tummy!!!

;) and good luck and many blessings on your surgery .

I'm sure they'll give you instructions, but my recollection from family members having oral surgery in recent years (haven't had it myself since I was about 12 and don't really remember the eating afterward) is that you're not supposed to eat hot food at first, so even if you do broth, you would probably have to it fairly tepid. Also, no straws (apparently the sucking can dislodge the clots where your teeth were).

I ate a lot of mashed potatoes and refried beans last winter when an extended bout of the flu left me with a spasmodic coughing reaction to most solid foods, and even to soft foods and liquids if I didn't take a break between swallows. Whatever you can tolerate by way of liquids that have calories (even juices and sodas that you might not ordinarily drink) seems like an easy way to get some calories into you. I don't think you need to worry too much about consuming health foods or hitting your macros while you're recovering from the surgery. Hopefully you'll be able to return to your normal diet in four or five days. Good luck.

I just had all 4 impacted wisdom teeth out thursday. Greek Yogurt and whey protein shakes were how I got my calories. I am already tired of liquids. I haven't been very hungry and have to force myself to eat. Just started with scrambled eggs, but scared to get them in the open pockets so i eat very tiny bites.

    Good luck with your surgery

Mixed fruit applesauces with no sugar added.
Juice with veggies in them. Sunrype and V8 make fruit/veggie blends

Smoothie: a big handful or 2 of fresh spinach, 1 banana, 1 tbsp peanut butter, 1 tbsp. Baking cocoa (or more, to taste), a few icecubes and 1/2 cup milk or almond milk (you could also add yogurt or coconut oil, other healthy fats) Blend it all up and enjoy. :)

Good Luck! When I had my wisdom tooth pulled I lived on smoothies and cold soup. I didn't like the nutritional drinks (ensure taste like chemicals) so at times I mixed them into smoothies with much taste. You can make cold, smooth soups to eat with tiny spoons.

I had mine out last year. I ate things like eggs, yogurt, lots of broth, pudding. I didn't worry about calories though because I was very overweight. It's only for a couple day you can eat regular foods. I would just take it slowly and eat what you think is okay.

I had all mine removed and my part of jaw rebuilt earlier this year, I had no problem with things like oatmeal, soups, eggs, vegetables (overcooked or mashed) with luck you will not find it as bad as you are expecting either.

My dad took mine out years ago (he is a dentist, not a crazy man running around extracting wisdom teeth lol), and I believe I was so half in the bag from the painkillers that I didn't think to eat much. Of course, I was a teenager then, so I didn't worry much about calories. I miss those days!

The first thing I thought was strawberry shake from Steak & Shake. Yummy! I got a recipe for butternut squash & peanut butter soup. I think it would be easy to purée. It was very hearty. The 100 days of Real Food website has the recipe. When I was in the hospital after a C-section I was nauseous so they put me on a liquid diet and I had the best potato soup. The liquid diet version was way better than the chunkier version I had once I could have solids again. Hope you heal quickly.

I was wondering how you are doing. I saw your other thread when you started and was hoping for an update.

Glad to hear things are going well.

I honestly don't remember any issues with eating after my wisdom teeth were pulled (just two at once--that's all I had!). I was in college, and actually went out to the bars that same night...of course, that was just for liquid nourishment. Ah, the good ol' days.

A few weeks ago, I had a biopsy of my cheek and that hurt like heck! At first, I did stick with soft things like mashed acorn squash, protein shakes, etc. Since it was only on one side, I was technically able to eat anything as long as I chewed on the good side and kept food away from the other. However, that is much harder than it sounds, and I found that it was easier to stick with things that I could cut into very small bites.

Good luck! (You can always eat lots of ice cream if getting your calories becomes a problem, but I don't think you'll need-- or "get" -- to resort to that.)

When I had my wisdom teeth removed, I also had major jaw surgery that resulted in having my jaw wired shut for 10 days. Ensure, Boost, watered down fruit smoothies, broths, and juice were my best friends. Still lost a significant amount of weight, but those are what I relied on. I agree with UsedToBeHusky though, do NOT drink anything through a straw! I had to use a syringe with a long tube to consume my "food", but hopefully you'll be okay with a spoon!

I wish you a speedy recovery!! :flowerforyou:

Getting mine out next weekend! I stocked up on a few things this weekend and I'm going to make a trip to Whole Foods before my surgery to get some hard-to-find items.

My menu: natural unsweetened applesauce, 100% juices (need to get the smoothie-like kinds, such as Naked, for the nutrients), yogurt, mashed roasted sweet potatoes, jello with sliced bananas, homemade smoothies (with bananas, nut butters, and almond milk), flavored almond milks, dark chocolate pudding, mushy oatmeal (perhaps blended with nut butter and applesauce for flavor)

Time to revive the thread... am heading into oral surgery at some point within the year and collecting great ideas for "soft foods" during those first days and weeks post procedure!
