Body fat under 10% for a woman..unhealthy?

My girlfriend recently weighed in at just under 10% body fat. That seems incredibly low to me, and I'm worried about her general health. She's in shape, but not body builder type shape. Is this harmful to her body, and how do we raise it without her gaining weight(if that's even possible)? Thanks a lot!

Statistically it is low, but if she is an athlete or otherwise healthy than she should be fine. A dr. would have a better input on that.
To increase body fat % and not gain weight you would need to decrease muscle mass.... why on Earth would you wanna do that?0 -
How do you know her bodyfat is under 10%? What type of testing was used? Is she a runner or very athletic?0

10% is not healthy for women. At all.
How does she increase it, she needs to eat.
You should probably be more worried about her health than her weight.0 -
Staying under 10% bodyfat for a woman for an extended period of time is dangerous. It can have an impact on various body systems, but most significant in women is the effect it can have on hormones and reproduction.
However, I'd be curious as to the method used to measure your girlfriend's bodyfat %. 10% is extremely low in a woman, and the vast majority of women would never reach percentages that low. Female bodybuilders usually compete at between 8-10% bodyfat, and they only maintain that for a very short period of time for competition. To give you an idea of what various bodyfat percentages look like, check this link: http://www.leighpeele.com/body-fat-pictures-and-percentages
Also, if you look at my profile photos, I was about 15% bodyfat in that photo, for my figure competition. Healthy bodyfat percentage for an average, athletic woman is between 17-20%.0 -
21% is what I've read is considered an ideal BF% for women.
I too wonder what she used to get that 10% estimation. Does she menstruate? That usually stops at very low BF%.0 -

We have a Tanita digital scale that tracks body fat%. I really have no idea how accurate those brand of scales are, just that it had her under 10% for the first time today. I would love to hear that the number is probably inaccurate. Looking at the link with the pictures side by side, I think you might all be right. Thanks a lot.0 -
Temporarily, probably not disastrous. All the time, yeah, probably problematic.
But I suspect the measurement is bogus. Just a hunch. It would be unusual for a woman to "accidentally" be at 10% bf.0 -
The only person that gave you the most sensible advice for your dumb insecure question was 2012asv, the rest of these hoes are just brainwashed conformist that probably always believe what is told to them and follow advice that MEN give to them thinking they know all about the female body WRONG! I bet you the old "you won't get pregnant this way" trick worked on most of them and they had accidental births.
First off lets start off with the goals of your gf, not of you. If you girlfriend plans to get preggers, then MAYBE below %10 bodyfat is not ideal for her, but only a QUALIFIED doctor would know this; and not all of them are. But before we even consider that, do know that not ALL WOMEN ARE MADE THE SAME, just the same as not all men are the same; not every freaking rule applies to them. Let me explain what this means since people love to apply statistics to everybody it probably doesn't apply to. These are STATISTICS, NOT the law to apply to everybody. If your gf is healthy and naturally low of body fat, what does this tell you? This simply means she is fine the way God made her and no statistical number is going to change that or apply to her. I know women who've had healthy hulk babies and were way below 10 percent body fat. They still were fertile, functioned perfectly fine, ovaries, period regular, ovulation on point; most women don't even know when they do it even though they should and I bet these hoes on here don't even know when they ovulate. And of course these intelligent women didn't google everything for information when it came to knowing themselves like KikiD22, therealangd, and the other moron. Do yourself a favor and stop comparing your information and your gf to what society says is supposed to be and do what you know feels right to you. Your gf knows this and this is probably why you decided on such a dumb insecure screen name, which really should be changed to fatANDinsecurejeremy.
Of course all this info is a set up to keep women down, labeling them as SOO much different than men and so much weaker, and women just eat it up like stupid helpless *kitten*, doing the bidding for men. I myself know that most of these stats do not apply to me. I have done most of the opposite of all these scientific studies naturally, and when I go to the doctor they study my chart in AWE, wondering why it defies what they have been taught. That's because most of what they tell you is BULL**** and meant to brainwash you to think in such ways to keep you from the truth and weaken you. And y'all just eat it up like pigs.
I feel sorry for your gf and wonder if your gf still with your non supportive, insecure sorry *kitten*. I feel sorry for you that you haven't caught on to this world by now...you must be young and if not that, still naive. And disappointed in the old hag that told your gf that she needs to eat as if she really knows all about it *rolleyes* for an old lady that's actually embarrassing that she isn't wise at her old age to be making judgement like that and you are weak to let her. And the *kitten* showing you google pictures? Are you serious. Like I said 2012asv gave you the most logical advice.

digital scales are not all that accurate for measuring body fat %. If I'm dehydrated it will give me a body fat measurement of 5% less (or an even greater difference). It's given me some wildly varying answers within a 24 hr period. The only thing it's useful for is watching if the general trend is up or down.0 -

As if this account will be here in a day or two if that first post is any indication. MFP generally puts up with a lot of general derp, but that kind of malicious asshattery is something up with which they do not put.0 -

Digital scales are NOT precise. Also it really does depend on the person, you can't just put a number on someone and say they're healthy, thats like saying one person at 130lbs is fat and the other is too skinny. It is all entirely on the person. Let her decide, its her body and up to her if she wants to gain weight or not.0

If she is genuinely <10% bf and doesn't look like a body builder she mustn't have much muscle? Think you would look anorexicy at that percent with low muscle wouldn't you? But anyway I would say it is bordering on unhealthy. If shes not happy just putting on some fat then get her to look at putting on some muscle (some fat will come with), weight training, eating in a surplus. She will be heavier but so what?
Just read the rest of the thread. Firstly, what the?! LOL
Second, yeah those aren't that accurate, so in this case if she looks healthy I wouldn't worry about it.0 -

Yeah, my thoughts as well.
As to the question, my suggestion is if she's concerned about her body fat percentage, have her see a doctor or even a nutritionist. Everyone's body is different and she may be in perfect health or she may have some issues but really that's something for a medical professional to answer for you, as far as I'm concerned. Out of curiosity, what is her height and weight?0 -

According to Covert Bailey, who's written books & done research on the topic...9% for a woman is considered a professional athlete level. I wouldn't go any lower than that. However, even if she's at 10% to say 12% & starts losing her periods, losing hair, or having other malnutrition symptoms, then that's a sign she should be at a higher level. I've gotten as low as 14% & not had a problem. But everyone is different.0
