Good diet and no exercise. How long to lose weight?

Hi my name is Jessica,

I am 167cm (5'6) tall and weight 80.7kg.

5weeks ago I was 86.7kg and I want to know how long WITHOUT exercise ie. just changing your diet to eating less calories then your body burns per day, how long did it take you to lose weight? My reason for asking is just out of curiosity to see the difference gym can make to changing diet.

Just incase you are wondering my goal is to get from 86.7kg to 55kg-60kg. (I am 6kg down now and have approx. 25.7kg-20.7kg to go).

I am recommended to eat approx. 1583 calories per day BMR and when I go to the gym 3times a week I do 1hour cardio burning 550 calories and then I do 60push ups, 60 situps on a bosu ball with a 4kg kettle bell above my head, 60x60kg leg press and sometimes pull down and push out arm weights or rowing 2km in 8min.

Calorie calculators recommend i eat approx. 2300 calories on those gym days to maintain and 1850 calories to lose weight, however I always stay around the 800-1100 calorie mark every day with or without gym.

This is the calculator i used: http://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calculator.htm

So the calculations are telling you too eat 1850 too lose weight but you're ignoring them by nearly half. Why do you think that eating 800 to 1000 calories a day is sustainable? Recalculate eat a sensible amount at a sensible defecit and you'll lose weight and keep it off. Doing what you're doing you may lose weight but it won't stay off and you'll make yourself ill

why would you do that when you can lose weight and retain LBM by eating more?

If you stick to it, 1 lbs/0.5 kg per week is the target you should have when counting calories. It is not advisable to cut more calories from your diet. If you do want to lose more, exercise is the way to go. But 0.5 kg per week is really good progress.

It might be an idea to change things around and have the calories the calculator recommended. A daily intake of 1,850 sounds about right, with the amount of exercise you're doing - you WILL lose weight on that, too! Really. Going under 1,200 means one of two things will happen - you will either give in to the cravings and binge or start to feel tired, disorientated and unwell.

The body needs more calories every day than you'd think, even without any exercise - just to respire and keep you warm.

    All the best.
  • IMO (and from personal experience) you will lose LESS weight when combining exercise with diet, but you will lose fat and gain muscle, and look and feel better. Just look at all the posts on the forums about 'skinny-fat' people, people who are skinny but still have a tummy pooch because of lack of exercise and control of their core.

How is 800-1000 calories a good diet?

Go to http://scoobysworkshop.com/calorie-calculator/ Put yourself at lightly active. Buy a food scale, weigh your food, and eat the number it tells you at -20%. You'll lose weight a HEALTHY and SUSTAINABLE way.

And you want seriously to loose weight with 800-1100 cal a day? If you seriously want to loose, you need to eat more! Your BMR is most likely higher then that already. A good diet for people who do not exercize is Atkins (I saw it is called the diet for lazy people)
