Broken foot not healing, depressed as hell, please help

Okay, so I broke my 5th metatarsal about 6 weeks ago now. I went to the doctor today to get the results of my latest xray and it showed absolutely NO healing whatsoever! Yeah...exactly right?
I'm now taking calcium and vitamin D supplements daily as of today. And I go back for x ray in 4 weeks. Meanwhile I'm losing my mind. My foot no longer hurts, so I was weight baring and taking off my air boot and walking around the house thinking that it was getting stronger. I was even testing pain levels on my elliptical thinking that I could start exercising soon and get back to losing weight instead of gaining like I have been. I've gone up a size and three inches along my waist this past month. And usually working out and eating healthy when I don't have broken foot days a week it takes about a month to budge an inch. Not very encouraging right?

Well.. I've fallen off the wagon recently, drinking more, binging on snacks. I'm able to make and eat healthy meals, but when it comes to snacks, I grab chocolate and other crap that I know I shouldn't. Its hard, I can't get out of the house and I'm bored to death and I don't have the discipline. I've been telling myself all month that this is almost over and soon I can get back to working out an hour a day. but that's not gonna happen anytime soon.

At least not the way I normally do. So I need some advise, what are good fat burning exercises I can do with this broken s.o.b of a foot that won't hurt my foot but that will burn fat, provide some kind of cardio and not make me bulky and ugly with too much weigh training. yes, I know muscle burns fat but usually don't you have to be doing both cardio and weigh training to avoid looking bulky?

helllllp.....:brokenheart:

I'm so sorry your foot isn't healing.

Can you do some exercises using weights? If you don't have free weights, maybe use cans of beans or whatever?

I'm sending some good energy your way.

This is why I don't keep any tempting goodies in my house. It's a lot easier when I don't have to fight the urge to snack on what's close at hand. If I have to make an effort, more often than not I'll just find something else to do.

You can lose weight without exercising, or at least halt your gain. Find out what your TDEE calorie total currently is, for sedentary activity, and eat at or below that total. Make sure you're eating enough fat, protein and fiber to feel reasonably satiated. :drinker:

You won't get "bulky and ugly" from weight training. I promise. Look it up. Cardio is not essential for weight loss. Recommended, not essential.

This is a good suggestion, but please don't think a can of beans is going to do anything. You'll need something substantially heavier than THAT. (a can weighs less than a normal sized handbag! how could it possibly burn anything? lol, by that logic every woman with a purse or a toddler should be RIPPED!)

Sounds like you already know what to do, then. It's something we all struggle with and have to learn to overcome. You're halfway there in realizing that's the problem, though. Keep at it, and don't give up. You'll make it.

I'm sorry you are dealing with this. Get yourself a big exercise ball and you will get an awesome workout without hurting your foot. You can do this! Believe me, I've had open back surgery, spinal fusion surgery and a hip replacement in the last 3 years. I am down 48 pounds and also struggle with the depression and being stuck at home. 3 YEARS!! I reach for the chocolate and other bad choices too so I get it. Add me if you want, I totally understand!

what did your doctor suggest as to why it wasn't healing?

You could look into Pilates as you can do the exercises on the mat and they can be adjusted so your foot is not involved.

Are you getting enough protein? When I had my weight loss surgery they were very clear that I one of the reasons I would need to watch my protein is because your body can't heal properly without it. I recently started consulting with plastic surgeons & they also stressed that I need to be eating enough protein before any surgery. It's just something to maybe talk with your doctor about.
