Hey!
I am feeling so discouraged! I eat well all day, but then at night I end up eating up to 600 calories more. I have been doing this for today two weeks. Yesterday I weighed in at 119 lbs. but today I weighed in at 122 lbs. I am so upset that I have gained three pounds. How do I stay on track? How can I eat the ideal amount of calories. Also, will this weight gain go down?
Thanks!

Can you rearrange your eating so that you eat most of your calories at night?0

This.
I eat my bulk of calories at breakfast and lunch and then have fewer calories for my evening meal and desert. I purposely work it out this way.
Oh, and I doubt that have gained three extra pounds. It could be more water retention than anything. Weight naturally fluctuates anyway. To gain one pound, you would have had to go 3,500 calories over the highest amount of calories you need to maintain your weight. Do you really think you ate that much?0 -
That three pounds overnight is water and/or waste.
I like to eat a lighter breakfast and lunch so I have at least half my calories for dinner and a late night snack.0 -
If you're under your calorie goal, it really doesn't matter if you eat those calories at night, however, you really shouldn't go to bed on a really full belly, since it can cause acid reflux. It takes 3,500 calories to gain or lose 1lb of fat, so unless you ate that X's 3, then it is only water retention. You probably consumed too much sodium. I don't like to go to bed hungry, so if I'm hungry, I'll try to eat something small, like a bowl of cereal, or protein shake or something. Don't be upset OP! :drinker:0
-
Make sure you have enough protein, fat, and fiber in your diet. Those will satisfy your hunger longer than sugar, carbs, etc.0
-
Procrastinate!!! Just procrastinate eating. I've read that many food support reducing weight, maybe you should consider consuming them in the night.0

To keep your eating at night slightly more manageable, try drinking a glass of water BEFORE you eat dinner. I've started doing that because my main meal is in the evening, and I've found that I eat less, and it's easier to stay under my calorie limit that way.
But it's doubtful you put on 3lbs overnight - I agree that it's probably water and waste. DO NOT STRESS.
Keep on doing what you're doing, and since you've recognized you eat more at night (step one), make a little effort to go, "Yes, this is my main meal, but I've been good all day and I'll keep being good. I'll just be good with a bit more food."
Keep on truckin'!0 -

This is what I do. I'm a notorious night time grazer and so I've allotted a decent amount of my calories towards that.0 -
Can you fit in some extra cardio to make up for that 600 calories? I find that exercise helps me earn back calories, and I don't feel so deprived. Or is it possible to just go to bed earlier? that way you are not sitting in front of the tv, wanting something to eat.0

Yes what some of the others said is a very good idea. I don't bother eating breakfast most days now unless I'm hungry and then I have more calories to eat whatever the family is having for dinner. Studies show you do not have to eat breakfast unless that helps you keep your eating thoughout the day in check then keep the calories for when it suits you to eat. Eating late at night will not make you gain weight. That is also a fallacy. You can eat at middnight and it won't make you gain weight.0
-
Yes, I often budget the bulk of my calories for the evenings, or as has been suggested, get a bit of extra cardio in and enjoy! :drinker:0
-
If the night time is when you tend to eat the most, then as others have suggested budget your daytime meals accordingly to smaller calorie portion. You can make it work. If you're not hungry for breakfast then don't eat breakfast. Eat a small snack to hold you through til lunch.0

I've always been a night time eater as well. What works for me is trying to keep my meals around the same calorie allotment and If I feel like I want to eat I ask myself if I'm really hungry, bored or stressed. Typically I'm either stressed or bored, so I get busy doing jewelry making or I take my dog for a walk in the park, or I start cleaning my house. The key is to stay distracted so you're brain isn't consumed with thoughts of eating. Also, make sure your house is clean of junk food, get rid of all of your trigger foods (foods that you can't put down once you have a bite) make it easier on yourself by getting rid of any type of temptation. I've had to get rid of Kashi go lean crunch because I would take a handful and just eat it dry, so obviously the sugar in this food calls me. If I can minimize my eating at night I certainly know that you can. You're in control don't let food be in control.0

I have always saved at least 700 cals for dinner/snack...I am soooo scared of binging and this has worked well for 10 months..I have had no proof that eating most of your cals at night are a hinderance to weightloss..I think I, and many people on here are proof of that. Plus I find that when I go to the gym right after work, then eat at around 645...I really am not hungry by the time 9 hits..and then bedtime is right around the corner!0

I'm new here, so please excuse my interruption but you are 119 pounds! How tall are you? Are you in a healthy weight range? What is your BMI? I think your ticker says 6 pounds to go, but seriously...113 pounds?!? Unless you are 4'1", that is super skinny if we are just talking about weight here. Like I said, I don't know you but that is very light.
Maybe you are eating because you are hungry! Is it out of emotion or is your tummy actually rumbling?!?0 -

Totally this. I'd rather know I have a huge meal to look forward to rather than fire-fight and have none left because I had a big breakfast/lunch.0 -

This. I eat between noon and 10 pm. I've never liked breakfast, but I do like like going to bed full.0 -

This. Totally....a HUGE part - over half - of my daily calories are eaten after 5pm. That is when I binge, so now I just binge on my daily calories.
It helps, too that my family knows darn well what my trigger foods are they keep them out of the house. It is funny to see the places my husband eats lunch by watching the bank account...LOL...Pizza, Chinese, Subs.0 -

Yup. All of this.0 -
I do this as well. My plan of action is to lighten my days eating to leave more "wiggle" room in the evening so that if I do snack at night I don't feel so guilty. I also plan on going to bed earlier, and avoid the time. It makes sense... eating dinner around 6PM, if I stay up past 10PM, that's four hours - of course my body is starting to grumble and want more food - it thinks it's got to keep me fueled. SO I'm going to go to bed BEFORE 10PM and see how that goes.0
-
I take ten minutes every morning to log everything I am going to eat that day. It took me a little longer at first to do, but now I know what is in my cupboards and fridge. I make myself a cup of coffee, sit down, and log away.
I have found knowing my nighttime dinner and snacks are all ready accounted for has really helped me! For instance, tonight, I'm having home made enchiladas but I made sure to leave some calories for popcorn because this time change has REALLY messed up my eating this time and I want dinner SUPER early, so saving a bit for popcorn, is helping me.
Good luck. I can totally relate to this!0 -

Ooh, good point! I also generally pre-log, and that absolutely helps keep me on track. I really prefer to map out my food for the day in advance, and on days that I can't, like today (since I'm going over to my sister's for dinner) I try to be more mindful during the day.0 -
How tall are you?
You have to eat 3,500 EXTRA calories to gain one pound. Weight fluctuations of a few pounds will happen.0 -

Calm down. 113 pounds is within the healthy range if she is 5' 5" or shorter, which is reasonably likely. However, it is possible that the OP is eating too little. OP, since you're pretty light as it is, you should be eating at a slight caloric deficit to lose weight slowly. Are you?0 -
I love reading about how someone who weighs 119lbs is upset about now weighing 122lbs. It gives me a smile. I haven't weighed 122lbs since I was about 12 years old.
Be upset about gaining 20, 40, 100lbs. Be upset when your dog dies or you lose your job or your significant other breaks up with you.
For 3lbs, go to the bathroom, eat healthy today and drink lots of water. Nothing to be upset about.0 -
Can you rearrange your eating so that you eat most of your calories at night?
This. I usually eat 1000 calories or more in the evening to keep myself from snacking. I have tons of control at work, but home it's a different story. If I leave myself tons of space for a meal, wine, and a treat I find myself staying on track no problem.0 -
If you know that you tend to eat more at night, then plan your meals so that you do just that. So, if you're not planning your meals, do so. You said that it's been going on for about two weeks. What has changed? You didn't tell us how many calories you're eating, how much you weight, etc.
ETA: I don't think that you gained 3 pounds of fat overnight. Also, how many calories a day do you burn?0 -
Unless you are 3 feet tall :-) you are not overweight at 122 lbs. Be happy!
This could be just 'water' in your system too, which is not a bad thing.0 -

Hi! For anyone who is curious, I am 5'3 and currently between 118-122 lbs. I workout 5-6 days a week mainly cardio (I know I should do weights... I am working on it). I eat a minimum of 1500 calories per day PLUS exercise calories. I am at the SMALLEST deficit! So no worries there!!0
