any yogis out there?

I am here to lose...and my primary exercise is and has long been hot yoga (Bikram style). I also practice vinyasa and alignment based styles - if it has yoga in the name, I am game.

I wear a HRM to see the burn: a typical 90 minute hot class easily torches 500+ calories for me so several times a week is quite a boon.

I really need to get 20 pounds off and am giving myself six months to go for it in order to be sensible, healthy and have long-standing changes. My cholesterol was over 220 at my annual this year and I freaked...despite being in a size 8-10 and having a husband who loves my curves, the reality is that I have gained and my health is now in the equation - which is alot more of an impetus than skinny jeans to me at 51 years young.

So, any other yoginis???
Anyone want to do a challenge on the mat (say, 25 practices in 30 days?... not necessarily hot)

And for those of you that do yoga, primarily, what kind of other exercise (cardio? strength training?) have helped you slim down to health? I cannot run (bad knee from marathoning in my 20-30's) but I figure all the arm balances I do equate to some kind of strength training (how easy is it to life 168 pounds, really?)

Connect/friend me here...I started logging this week and in earnest yesterday after I saw the number on the scale and the results from my MD.

Ranger Smith isn't going to like this.
  • Another Yogi here! More Vinyassa than Bikrams though. Thanks for posting your Heart Rate Monitor numbers. I've been wondering what numbers to use and was just using some numbers I found on the internet.

I use Yoga as my primary form of exercise and for balance and peace of mind in life. I do it at least three times a week and the classes I take are a blend of Traditional Hatha & Vinyasa Yoga. The other days of the week I do Pole Dancing, regular cardio at the gym -- mostly elliptical and cross trainer or other low impact -- as well as strength training and weight lifting.
