knee pain

Options
I've always had knee problems. Since I've now gone over the 200 lb mark I know that it isn't helping things either. One of the reasons I never actually lose weight is cause my knees (especially my right one) will start to hurt pretty bad so I want to rest it for a day or two and that always turns into a week and then I just never get back into it. I really need to lose the weight so any suggestions on good and effective exercises I can do? I was trying to do 30DS, but it bothers my knees so I'm hoping to drop like 10 lbs and go back to it. Thanks for any help guys =)

I, too, tried to do the 30 day shred and ended up injuring my leg. I knew better than to try high impact, but did anyway. I walked until my leg got better. Sometimes it was a slow walk because of the pain. I now do low impact, some strength training and also walking. So maybe you need to try low impact for a while.

I would say just do some upper body toning and work on your flexabilty while eating at a caloric defict untill you drop some weight.

Then gradually incorporate some lower body cardio once you dropped some weight and knees are able to.

    Good luck!

What does your doctor have to say? That is, what is the actual problem with your knees? If you don't know that, it is very difficult to say what you can or cannot do. The suggestions of swimming, walking, pilates, cycling and the like would be good, but some knee conditions will be aggravated even by these. If you have not seen a doctor, I suggest you do so to get an actual diagnosis and perhaps a referral to a physiotherapist who can give exercises to help.

Calorie deficit is the one and only thing to lose weight.

If you want to exercise for the added benefits then I would see a doctor and/or specialist and get recommendations. Not knowing your exact condition, many exercises will be much easier on most knees once you are at a lower weight.

Don't forget to check out some comfy/stretchy knee supports. I have to wear em occasionally while working out or running.

2 knee surgeries on my left knee 3 years apart (2008 and 2011) for torn meniscus in several places. After the last one, my doctor told me to ride a stationary bike. It was the only thing that didn't hurt too bad. It has only been about 1.5 years since I've been able to walk without too much pain and without a limp.

I think you should see a doctor and not put any extra stress on the knee until then. Good luck.

Edit: BTW, my meniscus tears didn't show up in regular xrays, only an MRI.

Do you have a gym with a pool? One of the top additions to the athletic center at my college was an underwater treadmill. This allowed the athletes to regain their strength in water. If you have a pool, then I suggest start walking laps. It may sound a little silly, but it has multiple benefits.

    1) your weight is now not supported by your body, it is also supported by the water around it
    2) the water which is helping you, also is a great resistance tool. The drag and difficulty of wading or walking increases your caloric burn
    3) you can use your arms... Or not... As you feel comfortable. While walking you can always modify a breast stroke to get your whole body moving.

As you feel like you need a little more of a challenge, you may be able to get other flotation items to increase your drag and strengthen yourself up

Thanks for all the input guys. I haven't been to a doctor about it sice like high school and at that point they just said it was growing pains. I won't go to a doctor here cause I don't like the hospitals here at all =p The ideas were great and I'm going to look into what kind of swimming options I have around here (riding bikes in Harbin is super scary and I'm not that brave haha) and until then will just keep up my walking to school and being more careful about what I eat.
