Runners -- Anyone ever have a foot stress fracture?

I think I may have one. I have been running since February. I have been gradually increasing my distance over the past 6 months (first did the C25K program over 12 weeks), not going crazy or running more than 3 days/week. In that time period, I also lost about 40 of the 50 total pounds that I've lost. In the last 2-3 weeks, I've been getting a sore foot after running, so I was resting it until it was pain-free before running again (typically 2 days or so). About 2 weeks ago, when I went for my 10k run, I started getting some pain around the 5k mark, so stupid me, I kind of changed my gait instead of stopping. By the 8k mark, my knee was also in so much pain I was forced to stop. I could barely walk/hobble the 2k that I was away from home. But that pain resolved after rest for 2 or so days. I ran a 10k race this past Sunday, and my foot has been in fairly excruciating pain with swelling since then. I was waiting to see if it was going to resolved, but I'm guessing I need to see a doc about it. Anyone have any similar experiences? And what was the outcome? I've been staying off my foot completely and icing it multiple times a day, but it's still swollen.

Without an x Ray you won't know if you have a fracture or not. I very much doubt it though as the amount of miles you would need to pour in to get one would be a lot more than your getting in. Also if it was afracture the pain wouldn't go away after two days you would still have it while walking. If though it's a continuing problem seeing a doctor would be advisable. Where about is the pain in your foot? If it's in the heel it's likely to be plantar fasciitis. No matter what I would check the wear on your shoes as the first port off call

The pain is on the top of my foot, as is the swelling. I've had plantar fasciitis in the past, and it's definitely not the same pain. I just bought new shoes last week, since I was suspecting that it might have been my shoes, although I've only put about 250 miles on those shoes. In any case, I do agree that an x-ray is required, which is what I'll be doing tomorrow.

Foot no, but about a month ago I got over a shin stress fracture.
Basically had to stop running until it healed.

Were you in a cast? How long did it take to heal? Are you back to running now?
