About that GMO Pigs study

This is the study in question and I'm sure someone will post it as "proof" GMO is evil
A long-term toxicology study on pigs fed a combined genetically modified (GM) soy and GM maize diet

But do read these links for a little more insight on the paper

If I were to have analyzed these data, using the statistical techniques that I was taught were appropriate for the type of data, I would have concluded there was no statistical difference in stomach inflammation between the pigs fed the two different diets. To analyze these data the way the authors did makes it seem like they’re trying to find a difference, where none really exist.

I skimmed it first, and the conclusions seemed doubtful enough (see below) to try to find out who was behind it. So I looked at the sponsors of this journal. They include the Organic Federation of Australia, which seemed odd for a journal presumably aiming to be independent. Imagine the hullaballoo if Nature Biotechnology was sponsored by Monsanto!
I also wondered who Judy Carman and her colleagues were. She turns out to be – as I feared – a long-time anti-biotech campaigner, with a website called ‘GMOJudyCarman‘, which says it is supported by GMOSeralini.org. She is a founding member, according to this website, of the scientific advisory council of the Sustainable Food Trust. The Sustainable Food Trust was the UK outfit set up by former organic lobbyist Patrick Holden which stage-managed the media release of the infamous Seralini GMO rats study to the Daily Mail and other credulous outlets.
What about the co-authors? One is a Howard Vlieger, who seems to have made some wild allegations about GMOs in the past if this source is to be believed. Vlieger is president and co-founder of Verity Farms, a US ‘natural foods’ outfit which markets non-GMO grain. Despite this, the paper declares that the authors have no conflicts of interest, although it seems to me that he would have a very clear commercial interest in scaring people about GMOs in order to drum up business of his GMO-free offerings.
What about funding? The paper states that funding came from Verity Farms, the natural product outfit mentioned above. Carman and her colleagues are also funded by and associated with the Institute of Health and Environmental Research, an Australian not-for-profit which seems to be entirely dedicated to anti-GMO activism. Recent activities have included opposing Bt brinjal in India and CSIRO’s GMO wheat in Australia. Funding sources are not disclosed, although donations are solicited. The paper’s acknowledgements are a veritable who’s who of anti-biotech activism, includin Jeffrey Smith, John Fagan and Arpad Pusztai.

The research published in Nature Biotech and other comparable journals is most definitely supported by Monsanto. I do research in an entirely different field and I can tell you that my research is in some way funded by Monsanto just by the associations my institution has. The science in that article is firm and I don't think it claims anything more than that current feeding with GM crops causes inflammation in the stomach of pigs. We now know that 90% of cancers are caused by inflammation whether it be from diet, toxins such as inhalation of cigarette smoke, etc. So just the idea that the most commonly fed soy and corn causes increased stomach inflammation in a model organism that is a great mammalian representation of the human digestive system is alarming.0

Waiting to see how Oregon votes on GMO labeling disclosures. Most expensive advertizing champagne in US history for the no side........It's all about the money.0

ETA - the "organic systems" link (is that the original study?) doesn't work for me.0 -
I am endeavoring to be GMO free, Sugar free, dairy free, and grain free. Whooo this outta be hard to start, but I need to get my health under control. I am lucky that the farm next door sells fresh eggs, fresh meat, and so forth. My husband helped slaughter 120 chickens last week so our share of the work netted us some birds for the freezer. I notice a HUGE change when I slip and eat something that is GMO or full of hormones and such. My face burns red, my eczema cranks up and I get grouchy. Sometimes I get headaches, sometimes its just a visual migraine.
I am thrilled to see more folks really looking at what they are eating and not just counting calories. We NEED fat! Good fat. olive oil, butter, avocado and so on. Doesnt mean we can soak ourselves in it, but our brains are 90% fat. unless we supply good new fat it wont be able to heal, no?
im so happy to have found this place.0 -

Personally I have definite allergy symptoms with two GMO variations of food (and with two others suspect as well). I do not have these allergy symptoms with the non-GMO version of these food products. So because they are not labelled I am must either entirely avoid, or eat organic. It also limits what restaurants I can go to since they are in common use.
As more and more foods are GMO it puts me in an awkward position of having to be constantly alert of which foods I am eating are GMO or not. And testing for each new food is expensive, time consuming, and sometimes painful. So as more and more foods are made GMO it will make it more and more difficult for me to find affordable food.
I wish they could just label. But the food industry claims that labeling is exorbitantly expensive, or is simply not feasible with the complexities of the supply chain. So with the food industry own arguements that leaves the only option to ban GMOs entirely, and that is not likely to happen.
But i have to face reality. GMOs are going to be a fact of life. They don't effect most people and I thought I was alone a since I don't know how common these allergy symptoms are. And while you do have some different symptoms than me, I do find some comfort that I am not alone.0
