Why is my resting HR 51 when I am over 200lbs?

I'm 28, 5ft 7, weigh 216lbs, although I do workout an am active in my job. HR was always aboout 68-71 resting when I smoked, I've quit smoking and now it's at 51-58. It's 51 right now, when I wake up it's about 48. I also feel like I'm having palpitations but I'm not sure if this is because I see it's so low, my chest tightens, like an anxiety thing. I know HR can be lower in athletes and fitter people but I am definitely not an athlete! Why would my HR be so low? Thanks

I think this is something that it is worth seeing your doctor about. Don't want to scare you but I do have a nasty story about this.

    ^this.

From memory anything less than 60bpm needs to be checked by a doctor. :)

I am in the go see your Dr. camp. I had the same symptoms, as well as others, and it wound up being my thyroid. With medication, the symptoms have gone away. I still have a low resting heart rate, but I also run a lot now and I don't have the other symptoms I did have. This was the cause of my symptoms, not necessarily yours. Again, go to your Dr. so you may find out what is going on.
  • Thank you everyone, I will see my doctor asap....does anyone know... I have been to my doctor before and he measures my heart rate, and because I've usually just ran up stairs (my doctors room is on the third floor) and I'm nervous my heart rate is always normal, eg 65. It is always elevated when I see my doctor just because I get nervous. So he says it's fine. What shall I do?

I don't have the same exact issue, but I do have hypertension which is always worse when I'm in the dr. office. it's completely normal with my meds, but still always reads high when I'm at the dr. office. I keep a log and also take my machine in so that the doc can see all of my machine readings and know that I'm not blowing smoke up his *kitten* when I say it's normal on average.
  • Maybe you could start logging your resting heart rate every morning before getting up until your appointment? That way you would have data from a number of days. My mom had to do that with her blood pressure before a doctor visit.
