Ok so I did not check the calories of a avocado before adding one to my sandwich OUCH!!! should have checked before eating it but oh well too late now.

My question is what is the recommended amount you should eat?

I just had half for my snack and half for lunch...it's full of "good" fats that's why it's so high in calories...

agreed - good fats and delish. also helps with ur hair skin and nails. :) enjoy!
  • i generally eat a fouth of a larger avocado at a time or a half of a small one. those fats in the avocado are SUUUUPER good for you, they're the kind of fat that your body needs and craves for a good reason! yes they're high in calories but they're one of those foods that even because of that they're super good for you.

i wouldnt suggest eating a whole one in a sitting though (and trust me i would love to do just that! YUM!) if you're trying to lose weight. but keep eating those avocados! they're good for you! :D

I usually do 30 grams of avocado and it doesn't get out of control...otherwise I would devour the whole thing ;-)

they are good for you but if your trying to keep your calorie intake and fat down i woukd not recommend eating a whole avacado just a slice

avacados are really good for you - I try to limit myself to 1/4 to 1/2 at a time (1/2 if it's a small one) - I weight everything, so I try to keep it between 20 and 35g at a time.

If it was the only type of fat I ate, I'd eat more, but I also try to eat almonds, fish, olive oil and other healthy fat sources - everything in moderation!

keep the pit in the side you are going to save, this will stop it from turning brown...when you're ready to eat the other have, slap a knife into the pit and twist, the pit should come out really easy

If it's a sandwich, I'll do a quarter of one and mash it up with hummus instead of mayo or cheese (yum!) I make basic guacamole with the other half for a snack later or the next day.

If it's a salad, I do a half of avo since I need the calories there.

Basically, I'm obsessed with them! High calories or no high calories!

Look around for "Slim-cados". They are HUGE avocados, and they are supposed to be lower in calories and still good for you. But regular avocados are really good for you because they have good fats, which actually helps with long-term weight loss/maintenance :) So even though they are higher in calories, sometimes its worth it to reap the benefits of a great food!

I've never heard of these before - my first thought is that they must be genetically modified to have less fat/calories, but it sounds like they're not... I'll have to check them out if I find them in my area. Here's a link to some info, if anyone's interested:

Avocados are a MUFA and you want lots of em. MUFA stands for Mono Unsaturated Fatty Acids. Mufa's actually burn bad fat. There is no problem eating lots of em. As a matter of fact, if you have a Mufa at every meal you would be doing yourself a huge favor. Keeping your calories in check of course. MUFA'a also help lower cholesterol, triglycerides and are great for your heart. So enjoy.

Unless my avo is in/on something - I can't not eat the whole thing. :-p Just means I have to work off the extra at some point or deal with the consequences. BUT, I totally feel justified due to all the reasons people have already stated. :-D

If on a sammi, 3-4 medium slices (1/8-1/4 of the fruit). If in a salad (usually a fam. dinner side) - 1/2. Guac.. well heh.. that just takes anywhere from 3-6 avo's!!! LOL... and do you think I care? Yeah.. NOOOOO!!! lol

The only bad fats are trans fats and PUFA's (aka vegetable oil and canola oil) that are man made and / or highly processed and we shouldn't be eating those in the first place.

Saturated fats are not bad for you, they are natural occurring and contrary to popular belief DO NOT contribute to heart disease or hardening of the arteries. You are starting to see much back tracking from the "experts" in this area of thinking.

I like to buy Wholly Guacamole that comes individually packaged. I know you're talking about avocado, but I'm a guacamole fiend and this is how I can get my fix and stay accountable for the calories and fat. But yeah, it's at least a healthy fat.

I've tried one of those, and personally, I thought they were disgusting. I LOVE avocados. The Slimcado though, just tasted like water and so then it was just like why bother. It was a huge let down.

Just to chime in....I have eaten about four whole ones a week for the last 3-4 months. Love them! Lost about 30 pounds. Just make them fit they are great fuel. I weighed them and try to eat about 150 grams, medium sized whole. Lite salt, Mrs Dash Chipotle and Tabasco, makes a pretty plausible guac.
