The FDA is proposing removing artificial trans fat from the "generally recognized as safe" category. This would effectively ban their use in foods unless they could be scientifically established to be safe.
A couple of notes:
1) Some foods, such as beef, contain natural trans fats which appear not to have the same negative effects as artificial trans fats.
2) Trans fats are a type of unsaturated fat. Saturated fats are not trans fats.
3) Fully hydrogenated oil are saturated fats and not trans fats. Partially hydrogenated oils are where artificial trans fat comes from.

and ofcourse, transfats are only one molecule away from being plastic. which means, they are good for you.
also, never heard of meat having transfats naturally.0 -
Wow, this will turn the food industry on it's head. Bye bye on twinkies lasting until the sun goes red giant on us.0

Conjugated linoleic acid, CLA, as well as some others are a naturally-occurring type of trans fat present in the fat of ruminants such as cows and sheep. Around 2-5% of the fatty acids in beef fat are trans fats.

Also, your comment about "one molecule away from plastic" is nonsensical. Let's try to keep this thread in the realm of reality.0 -

Thank you for addressing the lunacy of those statements, Jonny.0 -
On a similar note, another thread was posted just recently with this link http://www.cnn.com/2013/11/07/health/fda-trans-fats/index.html?hpt=hp_t2

In reality, the vast majority of artificial trans fats in foods have been eliminated without anyone actually noticing. They still exist here and there.0 -
If it happens, then it's a good step. But from many labels of "junk" food I've read as of late, trans fats aren't listed and if there is partially hydrogenated oil, it's usually way down on the list.

Not all trans fats are created equal. CLA doesn't have the same effects that the trans fats in partially hydrogenated vegetable oils do.
