Depression and energy levels

I was wondering if anyone had any tips for increasing low energy levels caused by depression, as I end up feeling like a zombie most of the day and usually give up and go back to bed.
I can't do caffeine because of anxiety, my calories aren't too low, I know not to eat large amount of carbs in one go but I eat enough throughout the day, and I get enough vitamins and minerals. I got a SAD lightbox the other day, but that doesn't seem to be helping either.

Just wondering if you are on any medications for depression.... I battle depression everyday. If I didn't have a kid to be up with I would sleep. I wish I could give you some miracle advice but reality is a person has to take it day by day or minute by minute. I do find have a fruit smoothie seems to be a little energy boost for me. I use banana, strawberry, blueberries and spinach. Hang in there, I know it's hard to function at times.0

I didn't think it would work, but I joined a gym and am trying to go at least 30 min. at least 3 days a week. Had to set an attainable goal so I didn't beat myself up if I didn't go! LOL
Anyway, my mood and energy is a whole lot better already. And I also try to walk around at work. I am feeling so much better. Hope this helps0 -
Have you spoke to your doctor? There could be a few things that are the cause of your depression. I struggle with depression but part of that is from having an under active thyroid. I'm on medication to help with it. But here are a couple of things that I find help me when I'm in a depression.
1. Set my alarm and get out of bed. Over sleeping makes you more tired.
2. Shower and get dressed. Helps wake me up and feeling clean makes you feel better.
3. Go for a walk or to the gym. Exercise makes people happy. Even if you don't want to, do it anyways
4. Drink lots of water
Hope things turn around for you soon but I strongly encourage you to speak to your doctor.0 -
I know it sounds ridiculous, but exercise.
I suffer from severe depression, and I have the same problem. I am exhausted most of the time, and I know what you mean, about feeling like a zombie.
I know that exercising seems even harder when you are depressed, but I SWEAR to you if you can get yourself going you'll feel way better at the end. If I exercise after work, I am able to stay up about 1 1/2 hours longer each night than if I don't.
If you can try even just a ten minute walk in the morning, or do something small to start out, it may make an impact. I really hope this helps you. I completely understand the depression and I know how horrible it can be and how hard it can make it seem to do ANYTHING!
good luck to you on your journey0 -
Talk to your doctor.
Lots of water.
Vit B Complex and Vit D have helped my energy levels.
And just making myself exercise even when I don't want to. I feel so much better afterwards.0 -
Vitamin D deficiency has been linked to depression. Our bodies naturally create it when we spend a lot of time in the sun...but lots of us, when we are depressed don't get nearly enough, and now that the days are shorter...it can be an issue. When I was extremely depressed, I got a prescription for a high dose. Now I take an over the counter dose. Of course, this isn't THE remedy, but it's a good and easy addition to your arsenal of tools for combatting the depression.
Also YES exercise. Get your heart rate up with exercise almost every day. The endorphin release is very helpful, and I've found that regular exercise is AS important for me as taking my medication.0 -
Zurvita has helped us with our energy levels skyrocketing! It is a wellness drink, super tasting grape, that gives us all the vitamins we need and are not getting, it is just an extra bonus to be able to track and use myfitnesspal! Message me and I will tell you about it or send you samples, I promise it is NOT a scam or gimmick! It is just awesome. Also, my husband had depression too.0

Are you getting a good balanced supply of fats?0

I have some SAD as well. This time of year sucks. I moved to FL for 9 years and it was much better. Try getting some sun. Even a few minutes at a tanning bed has helped people. I think it's the bear inside of us that just wants to hibernate for the winter.0

I agree, exercise is the only cure for this (besides any potential antidepressants your doctor may prescribe). It will help with both the depression and the energy level.
Its kind of a catch 22. You have no energy, so you don't feel like exercising, but the only way to get more energy is to exercise.
Start off small. Don't stress yourself out to get to the gym, take a walk on your lunch hour. The fresh air will invigorate you and the walking can be very relaxing. Try ten minutes at first. Build up from there.
Good luck and I hope you feel better soon.0 -
I suffer depression and have for most of my life. What helps me is exercise. I didn't want to admit that in the beginning, but now its a part of my life. That exercise doesn't have to be hard or strenuous, could be as easy as taking an hour long walk. When I don't get a walk in or some form of exercise more then 1 day in a row, I feel down and hard to pull myself out of it.
FWIW, I was treated with anti-depressants for 5 years and they didn't make me feel as good as exercise makes me feel. I have been without medication and 'treating' my depression on my own for 3 years.0 -
I agree with talking to your doctor if you haven't already.
I've been diagnosed with depression as well and found myself in the same situation you're in. My therapist suggested I force myself to do a little bit of exercise each day. I found that once I get going, I can do a lot more than I had planned. I'm currently doing Insanity, and my husband and my sister both say they see a big difference in my overall mood since I've been doing that program. I'm not saying go do Insanity, but find something that you can stick with and see if that helps you.
Good luck to you.0 -
Qi gong can do a lot of good. It doesn't take much energy to do it and it will give more energy. It can also help to get calm when you're anxious. Here is one of many videos I found on YouTube :http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g-jSBBwr8Ko

These are some good suggestions. I'm in the same boat as I've battled with deppression for a while now (on medication now) but lately I just feel I have no motivation to do ANYTHING.
I'm going to try tanning 2-3 times a week, taking more vitamins, and TRYING to find motivation to work out more.0 -
I have SAD as well. I exercise Four times a week when I can. My therapist has me tanning once a week as well to help with the light. (I know it's bad for your skin but I only do it in the fall and winter for no longer than 7 mins)
I am also Vitamin D deficient. I take Vitamin D3 2500 IU .
I hope this helps.

Also Mediation is great. I use www.healthjourneys.com and get the guided imagery MP3s. Bellruth Naperstak is the best. She has one for depression and other issues. Check it out.0

Don't set your exercise expectations too high when you're feeling very low and unmotivated.
Have a simple success exercise such as going for a short walk (even if it's only five minutes). Anything you do over and above that is a bonus.0 -
Don't know if some already said this but try getting rid or cut back on.processed foods and sugary beverages or sugar added products. Instead, replace with fruit and veggies.(not comcentrates or juices, just the whole thing)0

Thanks for all the useful and supportive comments everyone. To reply to what some people have said:
I probably should have mentioned that I do exercise, usually for a couple of hours about four or five times a week, as it is one of the few things I can do and not feel crap, although I am exercising a lot less, and with a lot less effort, than I used to. I think it helps me a bit, and gets me out of the house and doing something, but I think I need to try to do some exercise every day perhaps.
I am on medication, and I think that makes me more drowsy rather than helping with depression. I think the doctor wants to change it, but I am scared to.
I take a Vitamin D3 supplement, as well as an A-Z Multivitamin, although I usually eat about seven or eight portions of fruit and vegetables a day anyway, as well as mostly whole foods.
I was consuming just over 90g of fat per day, but I have dropped that down to just over 80g so I can fit more carbs in. I get it mostly from eggs, fish, seeds, and the rest from vegetables and rice, etc.
I never thought of trying a sunbed for SAD. I have ginger hair though, so I think my skin would end up turning pink if I tried.
I used to try to meditate regularly, but got out of the habit. I tried again a couple of times a month ago, but just ended up spending an hour trying not to fall asleep!
Thank you all for all of your suggestions, I will give them all a try.0 -
I started a program through our local hospital that is based on obtaining a Heart Healthy program. The group is made up of 21 people and those each chose a partner to participate with them. We agreed to attending a nutrition class once a week, logging our food(where I heard about fitness pal) and to work with a trainer twice a week. Along with this, we got free passage to all of our local recreation center programs. Along with use of the equipment, we could go to classes offered - Yoga, circuit training, you get the idea. Someone in my religious affiliation brought me the flyer for it. A little embarrassing but this person had been with me during a suicide attempt, coming to my house and seeing there was no Christmas tree, listening to me cry, cry and cry some more about everything a to z. So I honored his request and I threw my name in to be a participant in this program.
I want to mention that I also take an anti-depressant and anxiety medicine and have for a few years. LIFE GOT HELLISH and my chin hung on my chest to the point I couldn't look anyone in the eye anymore. I was miserable.
The program started Aug. 24. I've faithfully exercised 5 days a week. I'm up to 60 minutes of cardio most every day. I have energy. I'm happy, I feel like bursting. I haven't lost tons but I'm back in my jeans, sitting at work in them all day. I take the 3 flights of stairs and I talk to people again.
For what it's worth, invest some time in moving to chase the depression out of your life. I may be on medication so I don't fall into the black abyss again. But I have found a plan that works. Eat healthy, enjoy every kind of food there is. Take the guilt out of eating and move, move, move. Walk, ride a bike, dance, garden, ski, jiggle your way to happiness. It really works.0 -

Don't be scared to change your medication if it's making your drowsy and not really helping the depression. Until I started the antidepressant I'm on right now, I went through 5 different medications in about 2 1/2 to 3 years. I went to a new doctor when I graduated from college and she said I'd been on the wrong type of antidepressant altogether. She tried a different class of medication and that helped tremendously. Every day is still a struggle, but it's more bearable now. For me, it was just trial and error. Hopefully you find the right combination of things that work for you.0 -
I agree about the medication. Don't be afraid to change. It's always scary, but it took several tries to get mine right too. One made me sleepy, one I gained lots of weight, etc. The one I take now I don't notice I'm even taking. (Unless I don't take it) Best of luck0
-
I think I have tried maybe four different types of medication over the years, so I'm not sure if there's anything new they can offer me. If I change then I'm worried it will go completely the other way and I won't sleep at all, and my appetite will disappear completely. Plus dealing with withdrawal of coming off the maximum dose of one medication, and getting used to the side effects of another which may not even help, at the same time seems like hell.0

Best thing to do is to go to your doctor and tell her about the lack of energy, low mood and depression you are having. There is a very high probability that she will identify an underlying problem and help solve it.0

I would recommend first and foremost...make sure you are getting vitamin D and magnesium. I literally have issues with not getting enough sun which impacts vitamin D.. I would say, talk to your doc about short term antidepressants if the energy issue is really impacting your life. I don't believe in long term antidepressant use if you can help it...but, I had to get out of my funk and the only way was zoloft.. I also make sure I exercise at least twenty minutes a day. I just got out of a month long funk where I couldn't do anything...and forced myself to exercise ten minutes (worked up to 60 minutes now) and it has got me out of the depression now. Good luck!! Do NOT BE AFRAID TO ASK FOR HELP!!0

When I was feeling very tired my GP did some bloodtests which showed I had folate anemia . Three months of supplements made all the difference. I'd never even heard of it until I had it.0
