I just started, I need tips and support!

Hey everybody, I have decided to lose weight. I weigh about 140 pounds and am 5'4. Today I weighed myself and it is the most I have ever weighed. I have always eaten pretty healthy and I don't know what made me gain all that weight. I want to lose about 20 pounds and I really need some good tips. Today was a really crappy day for me, I feel fat and depressed and have just locked myself in my room and cried for hours on end (yes, I know that this won't help). Also I need some tips on how to start working out at the gym. What exercises do I do, how do I stay motivated.

    Hey hey! Welcome. =)

I started in August with a goal of losing 40 lbs. I am currently down about 24 and this is how I started:

    Exercise
    1) I started walking for at least an hour, 5 days a week.
    2) I started attending a yoga class once a week.

    Food
    1) I started cooking all of my own meals and snacks out of fresh ingredients - no convenience store junk, take-outs, or pre-packaged garbage! Pre-cook, pack, and plan everything.
    2) Lots of water! I keep a water bottle on my desk and make sure to get in 8 cups a day.
    3) I log EVERYTHING. Even the cheats and treats.
    3) I allow myself indulgences here and there so that I don't feel like I'm on a strict diet. As long as it fits my calories for the day I will treat myself to things like wine and dessert (in moderation).

Now that I am over halfway to my goal, my exercise plans have been adjusted (adding in strength-training, running, and other full body workouts). My eating is going to remain about the same because it is working so far! I'm looking forward to learning more about macronutrient ratios though. I'd like to make sure that I'm not just losing weight, but also becoming nutritionally healthy.

My best advice to you is to start off with low impact exercises (swimming, elliptical, walking, yoga, etc.), and log all of your food. See where your body takes you. Listen to it, and be kind. Best wishes!! :flowerforyou:
  • My best suggestion is to trust the site! I started last August (2012) and have lost over 120 pounds. About 3 more to go to attain my goal. If you fall off the horse, get right back on. This diet works - if I can do it, anyone can!

  • Thank you all so much! After being at an all time low I decided to just suck it up and try my best to living a healthier lifestyle. After all a few extra pounds is not the end of the world! :ohwell:
