I'm not getting one, ever. My hair is naturally "wavy", so I guess easier for me to choose a style to go with.. Straight or wavy, anything goes.0

The 80's are back....just look around you and what the "kids" are wearing, listening to, and doing right now...it's like 1988 all over again.
Edit: I think things are actually moving into the late 80's early 90's though...I'm starting to see some "grunge"...personally, I thought we'd all be like the Jetson's by now.0 -
African Americans and others have been perming since the 70's till now. Don't think it ever left.

i LOVE perms!!! Just not the time and money it costs to get one! I have STRAIGHT hair with a lot of body so it looks gooft if I don't do anything to it (straighten it for smoothness or blowdry it) so I have had permed hair for 10 years...these last three years being the exception, I am TOO poor! but I want to change that for xmas! I have upgraded from the 80's perm to the spiral perm though, looks cuter with the ringlets!0

Lol, yup. Straight perms. Did one recently. Not thrilled about it, but I have otherwise crazy curly hair. So they're used as relaxers not just to make nappy messes, lol.0

she might be just getting a perm for the body and fullness it can add really fine thin hair - - they dont leave it on as long - so u dont get that typical perm look -kinda gives it that beach wave look - unless u scrunched it up good lol ...u just style your hair as normal - if you curl your hair - it makes it easier to curl -0

I'm not getting one, ever. My hair is naturally "wavy", so I guess easier for me to choose a style to go with.. Straight or wavy, anything goes.

he has his mom's hair...all I have to do is get it wet and it curls right up...we live in the desert so it's not an issue, but when we go to more humid environments it gets all crazy curls just like mom.0 -
My grandmother gave me my first perm in the 80's when I was about 9. It was right before we left on summer vacation. I went swimming the day after and my hair turned GREEN!!!!!!
I am sure they have changed the way they make the perm solution for the better. I will pass though lol!0 -
My friends younger sister who is 24 is getting a perm on Sat. What? Aren't they from the 80's? Are they making a comeback? She has beautiful straight hair and I think a perm will ruin in!
Perms were popularised in the '80s- the big hair era for both (the men and the women), only softened some by the '90s, where the softier wavier curls vs the harsh and tight or puffy, spiralised or poodle curls.
I'll share my perm from the '90s. At that time, i normally wore my hair natural down to my buttocks (hip length), which was only styled per event (straightened or softer waves or piled high ... Well you know).
Lost my paternal grandfather 2 years prior, then my maternal grandfather, so the hip length hair was cut to an inch as a protocol of respect by immediate blood relatives of the senior members' lines.. This is my hair growing out in a Classic British Bob, with soft wave curls in a spot perm as they call it, to give me some volume and the functionality. Was a Law Student at the time :laugh: The pic is from the ACA Law Society event, well before it became ACAP, having entered through my place of birth and not my ethnicity.
Then again it was the '90s. The biggest female star, in the American Sweetheart Julia Roberts wore her hair natural I'm assuming, where her hair looked to be a cross between a stack perm and a volumnising perm in one hair-do. *Pelican Brief '93; 21 Jump Street's Holly Robinson Peete in '91; And even Janet Jackson wore that aggressive curly and tight perm, in some redddy-brown shade '96-'97). The Millennium starlights championing the do are Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, Shakira (with and without extensions), Beyonce's lace wigs and for the younger sets - Selena Gomez works it beautifully, to name but a few. It never left, I agree with Niner.
