Question about drinking a gallon of water per day

So I have found drinking a gallon of water per day to be a great thing, and based on most of the articles I've read about it it's also important to make sure that you take your daily multivitamin with it each day as well. So I've been good about both, but here's my question...

I only log and count the water I drink towards my gallon per day, but there are two other things that I drink in addition to that. Would you count both, one or neither of these towards your gallon (I have not been doing so):

1) Coffee - I've heard not to include this, but I do take a mug with me for the drive each morning.
2) Green Tea - I haven't read anything about this, but it's basically a full cup or mug of just water with a bag seeping in it... So although I don't count it, it seems like maybe I should. Some days I may actually have a few of them in place of coffee.

Not that the above would be a big deal anyways, 'casue I think I'm drinking plenty of water and almost nothing like pops, etc..., but still currious what other might think on this one.

Thanks.

You can count it in my opinion. Both coffee and tea are made with water so it is basically flavored water. But if you are feeling good with the amount of fluids you are getting I wouldn't worry too much. The only issue with fluid intake is how quickly it can be processed. Usually it is recommended not to drink more than 1L per hour to keep your kidneys from being overwhelmed.

Coffee contains water, so as green tea. But the reason why people tell not to count it is because these drinks dehydrate you. So if you drink 1 cup of coffee you would get 1 cup of water in but would lose more. Its like mixing water with salt - drink a gallon of salt water but you still lose more water than you put in. So no, I would not count them.

One cup of coffee doesn't have enough diuretic properties to do anything. It's vastly overwhelmed by the amount of water you just drank in that coffee.

It's a very personal choice, but I count everything but alcohol towards my total daily FLUID intake.

    Just no. Total myth.
