Gifts are gifts. The exception is an item like an engagement ring. That goes back.

i came in here to say something similar - just to ratchet things up a little....

because an engagement ring isn't really a gift.

Just don't give it on her birthday, christmas or any other holiday, cause then you could lose that argument.

i don't think i would lose that argument...although it would be tougher to make.

but at the same time, personally, i wouldn't have done that anyway.

Oh much better than what I was thinking! Either he's on a cell and can't hit those tiny letters or on a PC and needs a new keyboard! Like you're much better!

    Gifts aren't returned. They're gifts.

The only thing that should be returned is an engagement ring, if the engagement is broken off. Engagement rings are a symbol of a verbal agreement. If the agreement is broken, the ring should be returned.

And THIS is why you don't give engagement rings as Christmas, Valentine's, or birthday gifts. Because then it's classified as a gift.

The engagement ring thing has actually gone to court before (since lets face it, they are pricey) Basically it tends to come down as a breach of contract suit. He breaks it off (for reasons other than her infidelity), she keeps the ring. She breaks it off (for reasons other than his infidelity), he gets the ring back.

It depends on the situation for me. If you don't want the reminders, give the gifts back or donate them. I have kept very few gifts from ex-boyfriends over the years. In fact, I think I only have two things leftover: a necklace from my very first boyfriend and a tea kettle from another one. I don't really like the necklace but it's a nice memory and the kettle is useful, so...

I'm married now, but the guy I dated before my husband was a CREEP. I kept the jewelry he gave me, then later sold it on eBay and used the cash to buy a new bikini for a vacation with the guy who became my husband. If your ex sucks, sell it and turn your bad memories into someone else's happy memories... then take the cash and buy yourself something awesome.

I keep it. Then again I'm the type who really likes gifts that are sentimental or practical rather than expensive.

I do feel a tiny bit weird every time I wear my $200+ Uggs that my ex husband gave me right before we divorced.

I've never really received any "real" jewelry from a boyfriend other than engagement rings...I've been engaged 3 times. First time, I returned the ring because it was an heirloom in his family. Second time, I got married and stayed that way for 9 1/2 years and we threw our rings in a river together when we separated. I'm married to the third now :-)

If you paid $200 for Uggs not made out of unicorn skin you got bent over without lube. Just saying.
