HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE?

I have slightly high BP :( So I will be taking Losartan. Has anyone else taken this? Have you ever actually got rid of high blood pressure through diet and exercise? Any tips please?? :) Thanks!

Yes I have actually. About 3-4 years ago I was diagnosed with high BP and prescribed medication (not Losartan) which I fought my doctor tooth and nail. Four days into taking it I was so sick I could not get out of bed. She said it was the medication bringing my pressure down. I opted to change my diet and increase my exercise and after several months had brought my weight down to within my recommended bmi range to where I no longer had high blood pressure. I remember throwing the pills in the garbage! Last time I checked my pressure was 110/70 and I've been off medication for years. Still try to maintain a healthy diet and exercise regularly. Doing MFP to lose close to 10 lbs that crept on over the summer. Excess weight increases your chances of high bp and food choices also play a role so if you can find the right balance of both those it's possible to reverse many health conditions.

This is the biggest reason I am on this journey....to get my BP within normal range. I have been told by a health professional that it is entirely doable. Two days ago I had to get meds refilled, two months ago it was $55, two days ago $265...headed to the gym first thing in the morning...

When getting a physical for a job and the doc told me that he didn't want to allow me to work because my BP was so high, THAT'S when I decided the weight had to go.

I have not taken Losartan but I have lowered my blood pressure with dieting and by reducing my sodium intake. I went from 155 over 99 down to 122 over 83 in less than 3 weeks. I think this drop is mostly due to greatly reducing my sodium intake as I've only lost about 7 pounds.

I went from 150/100 while being on metoprolol AND hydrochlorothiazide two years ago, to 109/65 (as of this morning) and no meds. Losing weight got rid of my hypertension.

I was told by my doctor my blood pressure was on the high side, but not so high as to take medication. He told me to cut down on salt & sugar, be active and try to lose weight. My only problem now is every time I go to the doctors to get my blood pressure taken I'm so anxious about it being high it's always raised so I never get an accurate reading. My doctor did say there was nothing to worry about, so I've now stopped feeling so anxious about it, but that is my main reason for starting this weight loss. It's good to know that others have lowered their blood pressure this way.

Losing weight and stopping the wine fixed mine. Now I put a little on and drink again it's up and down and doc wants me back on meds. No way I am. I'll just do the healthy route. Boring but has to be done.

With 70 pounds lost, my blood pressure is in the normal range. It hung slightly above140/90 for years before the weight loss, and now it sits right around 120/80. It often doesn't take much of a loss to bring those numbers down.

That's awesome and you are right. Doesn't take much. I have a BP machine at home and it's always lower than when I'm stressing at the doctors. White coat sydrome it's called and it's very common.

I'm some kind of a genetic freak. When I was 30, I had high blood pressure and the cholesterol levels of an older obese man, YET I was within a healthy BMI (but on the high side of healthy), I already ate a healthy balanced diet with few processed foods, and I was a runner. I did everything right. :grumble: Medication is a LAST RESORT for me. I will fight to stay off the meds!

I think my body doesn't do well with stress and it wants me to be leaner than average or it throws a fit. I didn't take any meds. Instead, I quit my stressful job, lost some weight (brought it down to the lower end of the healthy BMI - but still in the healthy range) and added more Omega 3's into my diet. Those are the only changes I made. Cholesterol is now just within normal range and blood pressure is perfect.
  • Hi Jm, yes I have gotten my high blood pressure down to normal levels (120 over 80) with that medicine. My diet actually made my boobs sag and I went back to eating normal. I was becoming balemic!!

Definitely. I'm always so nervous at the doctor's office that my blood pressure shoots up. I ended up buying my own machine a couple of years ago.
  • I too am battling hypertension which is why I am using fitness pal. It helps with monitoring sodium (salt intake) which is a biggie in the hbp reduction scheme. I have meds, which helped instantly, started fish oil on advice of my dietician but didn't see any noticeable result, added a mile walk daily, which helped in weight loss and uping my activity levels. The biggest and best thing was getting an elliptical a month ago and just doing 15 min per day of that on top of the walk. My readings are now at normal levels, granted I am still taking meds, and have more pounds to go, but this (hard cardio) was the most noticeable improvement to me.

Oh, I forgot to mention -- garlic supplements! I'm pretty sure they play some part in lowering my blood pressure.

My blood pressure sky rockets at the doctor, when I TRY to give blood (because I know they are taking my BP) and when my Mom takes my BP. All of them because I know I'm going to get a lecture.

    hello,

I have high blood pressure also. about 4 years ago, it was 260/140 and had a bleeding stroke. there was some damage done to my left side making even walking difficult and ended gaining about 50 pounds. a friend told me about my fitness pal, and loving technology, thought i would try it. i also got a fitbit one. between those 2, i started jan 4, 2013 at 282 pounds and now i am at 204. i am on losartan 100 mg, nicardipine 20mg, 2 pills 3 times a day, and was on labatelol, which recently my dr has taken away. she told me when i get under 200, she will consider taking some away. now my blood pressure averages about 117/70 or so.i also have a machine home to check it every few days, watch my salt as much as i can, and have upped my walking from basically nothing to 10,000 to 15,000 steps a day and has gotten as high as 25,000.this all is very inspiring to me. anyone interested, feel free to add me as a friend. probably on here 10 times a day, if you have any questions or just want to talk. have a great weekend everyone....

I had Level 2 Hypertension in critical levels my heart technically should've exploded, once i knew i had it, the symptoms were far worse, i could feel my blood almost boiling and i would get the shakes plus the heart would start racing prior to that i just had constant very slight abdominal/chest pains. they are all symptoms as is things like sleep apnea/ensomnia and anxiety/depression.

get hypertension tablets, and get rid of weight if excess fat if you are overweight did it for me and cardio which makes thins everything and chews up visceral fat which is the leading cause of hypertension. Also need to manage stress and drink plenty of fluids,

I got mine from ciritcal to safe limits within 6 months and dont need tablets anymore which is very abnormal usually u have to take them for life, I was prescribed with 1x4mg tablet with breakfast and exercising moderately, well i did the tablets fine but i exercised like a maniac instead and rarely did my BP get too high while on the medication, i had to get my weight down first and foremost, also cutting out all junk food and eating really low cals for the longest time. Not saying you need that extreme but i was very overweight and could've had a heart attack or stroke at any time.

PS the BP medicine will likely drop your heart rate by around 10% on average so you have to work alittle harder to get the same burns but it wont be in critical levels anymore.

You can also get yourself from any chemist an automated Blood Pressure monitor just like they use in the GP's, i would test my BP a few times a day to begin with and then every few days til it was down to safe levels..
  • I was diagnosed with raised blood pressure about 6 months ago which I find kind of funny seeing I have lost so much weight, and my diet has completely changed. Its borderline at 140/90 whereas up until last year it was 120/80 (yes even when I was 180kg and during my three pregnancies.) After a random test of 190/110 I cut out coffee and salt (which I hardly used anyway) and was sent for a battery of other tests. Every other test came back as normal, my heart is fine, my cholestral is fine, all my blood counts are perfectetc etc, and the 24 hour BP monitoring I had came back as 140/90. I also dont have migraines as often as i used too, and I dont get light headed or the shakes after exercising, or have any of the tell tale signs, so for now I am just to continue as I am losing weight and get checked every six months to see how im doing. The only thing they have said that could be causing my bp issue is stress (single mum with two teenage lads who have special needs, as well as a younger daughter, yeah Im stressed as is every other parent lol) and I now try to make time to relax and do some self help meditation.

Thanks everyone for your input! I love MFP  I started the tabs and just didnt like the way they made me feel so I'm off em! I will continue to be patient and try to do this naturally. Hibiscus tea helped lower it some. Im doing alot of walking- an hour a day most days and some weight training. Hopefully I will see results, or its meds for me :(
