I've read that most of the time we get enough proteins from our normal diets, so, are they necessary to lose weight?

It gave me diahrrea the first week, that's one way to lose weight, I guess... : )

So yay or nay?

it not meant to lose weight in any shape or form, what it is for is to feed the muscles with quick protein. Problem with quick is, there not process for the body to do, so in a way, you are cheating yourself on some free calories your body would burn.

Example, you et 3 oz of lean meat for protein, your body has to burn calories to process the meat for it protein. If you consume a protein powder or liquid, it is already processed, so your body just instantly uses it.

There a time and place for it, but not to replace your protein intake as a rule.
  • nay for me! I think I have tried them all and do not like the taste of any! Give me real "clean food" anyday! cottage cheese, greek yogurt, chicken tuna, eggs, etc, for protein!
  • I go with Yay! Optimum Nutrition is great tasting but you need to use a mixer for any shake. They are meant to suppliment meals not replace them.

Protien shakes are especially useful post workout because it absorbs faster in the body then whole food sources of protein. With that being said, protein is used for building muscle. There is no real benefit for taking it just to take it. I would only suggest it only after a strength training workout.
  • with breakfast to when your muscles are starving.
