Today I ran my first half marathon. I DID IT. 13.1 rainy, humid miles. I trained for 2 long years, pushing through a broken foot which required surgery, and the development of tendonitis in the PSOAS muscle. Sometimes I cried. Sometimes I felt like I would never do it. But I did it with my best friend by my side! We finished in 3 hours and 3 minutes-not an Olympic time by a long shot. But the reason I am most proud of this accomplishment today is that she lives with thyroid disease, while I battle heart and kidney disease (both of which I was born with, not developed because of weight issues.) Today we proved to ourselves and others that a diagnoses DOES NOT own you, DOES NOT have to be a reason to give up! I am having kidney surgery two days from now. I could have just given up my dream of running this race. But thank goodness I didn't!
