2-a-days (cardio)

I am about 90 days into my fitness journey, and recently joined MFP to streamline my efforts and add some accountability.

But to my question, for the last couple of months I have been doing 2 a day cardio sessions on the weekends when I have the extra time. Once in the morning after I wake up, and another in mid evening. I am a little more sore than usual on Sunday night/monday morning, but other than that I have not seen any signs of ill effect.

Tonight made me question this rationale though, as one of the employees at Planet Fitness (I am on a first name basis with most of those guys at this point) told me that it is potentially harmful to my overall goals.

I hit it plenty hard in both sessions, so it is not that I lack intensity during one session only to make up for it by the weight of sheer time, but he was feeding me all sorts of quasi-fitness rhetoric that has made me start to question my judgement on the issue.

Anyone else have any light to shed?

Are you doing any strength training? (I assume not at PF) What are your goals?

There's nothing wrong with two-a-days - athletes do it all the time - just make sure you build up to whatever it is you're doing.

Whether it fits with your goals or not is a little difficult to determine, as you didn't state what they were.

I do also participate in strength training, but only 2-3 days a week at present.

Weight loss is my primary goal at present, and I have already seen great success to that end in the last few months

I see nothing wrong with doing cardio twice a day on weekends, I'd do as much strength training as cardio, but that's me, your mileage may vary.

Don't listen to anything the purple shirts tell you, they're just selling you, most of them know nothing about fitness.

Cardio burns calories like nothing else. Running, cycling, swimming - all solid gold for creating caloric deficits (with a compliant diet, of course!)

As long as you're eating and sleeping enough to fuel your body, there's nothing wrong with working out twice a day. Many people do it all the time, including myself.

I do find it somewhat odd that they host "Pizza Nights" once a month when they are supposed to be promoting fitness. It is very affordable to work out there though.

I double up on Mondays and Wednesdays and have not noticed any ill effects!! I just make sure I eat a bit more those days so I have the extra energy but have found it is working great for me. I also try to add in strength in between to be well balanced. Keep doing what feels right for you!! Only you will know if it's too much!!
  • Hi

I know as long as your eating enough (at least 1500 net) then it may be ok however your rest days are just as important as the days you work out.

If you dont have rest days the mussles dont replenish the same. Professional athletes have physios and ice baths to combat body fatigue.

Also something I learned of late is that free weights are very good for weight loss. Building mussles - the breaking and healing of the mussles burns cals. Also for all the mussle in the body each pound of mussle burns a set amount of cals by simply being there.

Personally instead of double cardio I would do one session 30 mun cardio and 45 min weight training.
