Day 1 :-) Question about Trying to Conceive

So the last 3 days Ive been getting used to tracking on MFP and I am starting today as a fresh start.... Day 1. I have had a good amount of food - porridge and a veg stew for lunch followed by crisps and a mousse and spaghetti bolognese for my evening meal with 180 calories left.
Really enjoying feeling back in control again.
My question is, do I continue as normal dieting and exercising whilst my husband and I are trying to conceive?

Um, yes? Exercise is always good for you, as is a healthy diet. The most important thing to do when TTC is to take a prenatal vitamin everyday, as the higher levels of folic acid are important in the early weeks of pregnancy. The exercise and diet don't have much to do with the actual ability to conceive, but they are wonderful habits to have before conception and to continue with throughout your pregnancy. The only thing you will want to keep an eye on is your calorie intake to make sure you are eating enough, as you don't want a huge calorie deficit in pregnancy. But if you're actively TTC, you're going to be keeping track of things anyway and will be able to add in the needed calories once you conceive. Good luck!0

Sorry my post was less than clear reading back. I meant am I to attend the gym/do HIT training like 30 DS, I obviously know a healthy diet is only a good thing lol. My post sounded a bit thick lol.As you mentioned kgeyser, I meant more about calorie intake/defecit and rigorous exercise.
Thanks for your replies x0 -
this is off subject so i apologize in advance....your kitty is sooooooooooooo cute!0

Yes, BUT be sure not to increase your internal body temperate too much through very vigorous exercising (eg spin classes). If your core temperature rises too high it can damage a developing foetus, especially if your body is not used to exercise.
For the two first weeks of pregnancy (the "two week wait") you're not going to know whether you are pregnant or not, so a little caution is advised. Perhaps it might be wise to discuss with your doctor?0 -
Yes. You do what you normally do and if you do get pregnant and your used to your work outs then enjoy them while pregnant. There are many women that continue to lift weights, run, and HIIT workouts during pregnancy. Your body will tell you when to lessen your workouts listen to it. Keep in mind your only trying or your only pregnant your not handicapped from life.0

This is a great post. I had the same question as we're also actively TTC for a while now. I was afraid that exercising can hurt my chances. But from what I've read exercising (but paying attention to what your body tells you) while pregnant can be done. I think you just have to be more mindful to what you're doing.0

yes. think about all the "oops" babies. do you think their mothers changed anything in their routine in order to conceive them (well, besides the addition of a sexual partner)?0

That never hurts when you are trying to conceive. Someone had to say it. LMAO0 -
I just assumed its not healthy to diet whilst trying as once i fall pregnant im worried nutrients wont be there for developement
Babies in the womb are basically parasitic, as long as yoru diet isn't deffficint in nutrients as in none at all, it will take all it needs and leave your body short. So good nutrion, and low calories can still work, you jsut have to ensure yoru intake is nutritious, not empty calories (alcohol, sugar etc) this includes vital fats.0 -
Ok, to answer questions about vigorous exercise, there is no need to change your routine when you are trying to conceive. When my husband I were TTC our first, I was working out about two hours a day, cardio and weights, doing everything from spinning to running to cardio classes. I continued the same routine after we got pregnant, I just watched my heart rate and made sure not to do crunches or any exercises that required me to lie flat for long periods or invert after 20 weeks. I would still do my bench presses, I'd just incline the bench. I was also working as a personal trainer at the time, so I knew all the modifications. I would just let the instructor of any classes know once you become pregnant and they will help you work in modifications. The other thing you need to be considerate of in pregnancy is that the elastin hormone which allows your belly and hips to stretch to accommodate the baby is going to affect all your joints, which means that you may need to cut out high impact exercises at some point. But that is all after conception, so no need to worry about it now, especially when you don't even know what kind of pregnancy you're going to have.
Good luck to all you who are TTC, I know it can be extremely frustrating. If it helps, it took us months to conceive our first; for our second we said "ok, we'll try for a second, and if it doesn't happen in the next four months we'll just throw in the towel" and we got pregnant on our first try.0 -

Thanks She's called Orwell... :-)
Thanks for all replies ladies. I thought I was going to get my head chewed off for asking a TTC question on a dieting website.
DancingDarl... May I add you as a friend?
Kgeyser.... That sounds like a good plan. Hopefully, for all if posting in this thread itll happen for us all :-)0 -
I never tried to conceive, I just really really liked my husband alot and it just kept happening. With my second child, I had just lost alot of weight and didn't know I was pregnant until 4 months so I didn't change anything and he kept growing. Come to think of it, I always got pregnant after losing alot of weight, don't know if I was more fertile or more desirable....lol0

Oh how lucky are you cookie!
I think my DH and I have both got a bit embroiled (as you do) with work etc. we have now been married 13 months and aren't "trying" to conceive, we are just stopping trying not to! I was told at 16 I might struggle to conceive and he has always known it might be the case and said as recently as a week ago, if it happens hes happy if it doesnt, he's still happy :-)0 -
I'm not sure what you are ment to do but I just continued as normal. Good Luck0

Yep you can keep doing what you're doing, the only thing I change up is the after ovulation I don't drink until TOM comes, aside from that you're good to go. Another good idea is to go on pre-natal vitamins before you get preggers. The way I see it, is during this time I'm focusing on getting my body healthy for a hopeful baby eventually. (I've gone through two losses so hopefully third time is a charm)

^^dont want to leave my body short lol not on nurtrients, im eating healthy round the board so not too worried its more the calories they are sitting around 1300, wouldve thought 2000 be safer for pregnancy, trouble is trying to concieve I cant be sure when i have fallen preggo
You don't really need any extra calories in the first trimester. In fact some women, those who are obese to start with, have safely lost weight in the first tri (but under a doctor's monitoring!!!). Generally, the recommendation is to set to maintain once you know you are pregnant. But in the 2ww, I don't think a moderate deficit would harm anything … My advice would be to set MFP to lose 1/2 pound or possibly 1 pound per week while TTC, eat back your exercise calories, make sure your calories are coming from nutrient dense foods, make sure you get enough fats and proteins in there, and take a good multivitamin. My OB said to just look at Folic Acid and Iron … although you want to make sure you get plenty of calcium, too, just not in the same source as the iron or they interfere.0 -
According to the CDC, 95% of all women who are actively trying to conceive, and who actually can conceive, will get pregnant in 24 months.
A "basal body themometer" may help.0 -
Well, he's to us all that are TTC :-)
Please feel free to add me x0 -
anecdotally speaking and seeing the experiences of a few other women on the forum exercise and calorie reduction seem to be pretty good at getting one knocked up.0

BBT are good, I only found them annoying because you have to take it a the same time everyday before you get out of bed. I use OPT (ovulation predictor tests), and they work fairly well. I just order cheap ones online because in the store they are insanely expensive.0
-
As already mentioned you do not have to make any diet or exercise adjustments while TTC but a prenatal vitamin is recommended.
The majority of people get pregnant in the first three months so you could just wing it for three months and if nothing happens then start fiddling around with all the ovulation kits and BBT. Cervical mucous is also a fairly reliable predictor and you just notice it, easy peasy. You can google that.
Good luck!0
