In New Jersey, check out the George Washington Bridge Challenge, which offers both 5K and 10K events. http://community.acsevents.org/site/TR/CommunityFundraisingPages/CFPFY10Eastern?pg=informational&fr_id=46723&type=fr_informational&sid=1867930

In Li'l Rhody I'd recommend the Amica 5k (usually lines up with the Newport Marathon series) which lets you run along the ocean in Newport. It's a lovely view of the state (the course is a little hilly, and sometimes it's cold because it's in late October).0

Fort Myers Florida has some great races to attend.
Each February is the Edison Festival of Lights. Its a full week celebrating Thomas Edison. It is a 5K that goes across a river. Thousands come from around the US for the week long party/events.
Each Veterans weekend the YMCA has a 5K run. This year they hosted their first Glow 5K. Started at 7 pm.
Last Sunday was the first ever fort Myers Beach 5K, half marathon and full marathon. Started on the island and ended on the island.
Nothing like running a beach for a few days before or after a race.0 -
For MI, pick something on Mackinac Island: http://www.runmackinac.com/
Or, the Detroit Free Press half marathon: http://www.mlive.com/news/detroit/index.ssf/2013/10/check_detroit_free_presstalmer.html
Also in Michigan, while not a run, there is a 5 mile "event" over Mackinac Bridge (the bridge is closed to pedestrians 364 days a year): http://www.mackinacbridge.org/annual-bridge-walk-7/0 -
Maine has the Beach to Beacon which is a very popular 10k

YES! The Mackinac Island runs are fun and BEAUTIFUL!
I've run in many states, but I usually run half marathons; however, one of my most *unique* races is a clothing-optional 5K just outside of Spokane, WA, on the Kaniksu Nudist Ranch called the "Bare Buns Fun Run" (Link potentially NSFW: http://www.kaniksufamily.com/?page_id=4 ). It has a very fast downhill and you can run clothed, or...if you dare...strip off clothes before the finish and get a coveted "Nude Finisher" shirt). The medals are, uh, unique, as well!
A bit longer, but also in Spokane, WA, is the Bloomsday 12K, which is one of the largest timed road races in the US (50,000-60,000 runners per year). http://www.bloomsdayrun.org/
Another of my favorites is in New Braunfels, TX (in the Hill Country, south of Austin, north of San Antonio) held in conjunction with the Wurst Fest, a German heritage festival. It's the "Wurst 5 Miler" and finishers are treated to bratwurst and beer at the finish. Yum. http://www.athleteguild.com/running/new-braunfels-tx/2012-wurst-5-mile-run
Sounds like a fun goal!0 -
Not one I'd recommend here on MFP but it is becoming popular.
10th Annual Krispy Kreme Challenge will be February 8, 2014

2400 calories, 12 doughnuts, 5 miles, 1 hour. The mantra of the Krispy Kreme Challenge epitomizes the test of physical fitness and gastrointestinal fortitude. What started as a challenge among ten friends has transformed into a nationally publicized charity race, and the number one tradition to complete before graduating from North Carolina State University.
Participants begin the Challenge at the Memorial Belltower on the campus of North Carolina State University in Raleigh, NC. Runners then travel 2.5 miles through historic downtown Raleigh to the Krispy Kreme located at the intersection of Peace and Person Streets, where they attempt to consume one dozen original glazed doughnuts. The hardest part of the Challenge awaits them as they run 2.5 miles back to the Memorial Belltower0 -
The Ukrops Monument Avenue 10k in Richmond, VA. So much fun! It's usually the last weekend of March/first weekend of April. The 2014 race is March 29.

Fort Myers will be hosting their first Color Vibe 5K Jan 4, 2014. It's not timed, but people are encouraged to walk or jog to get the most color on them. I haven't tried it yet, but I am trying to get together a team from my office to jog it.0

Must run in Biston: the B.A.A. 5k the day before the Boston Marathon. It crosses the marathon finish line. Will probably close out quickly this year given 2013's events. It's a fun little course that showcases Back Bay, goes around the public garden and you get a little of the feeling the marathoners get when they have to climb that slight incline on Hereford street before turning onto Boylston and seeing how far away the finish line looks when you're ready to be done running. Also you get to pick up your race package at the marathon expo. The BAA 10k in June is awesome too!0

Cellcom race in Green Bay, WI if you're a football fan. You run through Lambeau field right before the finish. It has a 5K, 1/2 & full marathon
Sold!!! I am telling my husband about this one! Sounds like a blast and what a better ending to a race then to run on Lambeau field!0 -
The PF CHang's Rock n Roll Marathons in several states is always fun. In Az. it's in Feb . It is also held in San Diego . just Google Rock n Roll Marathon, they have a 5K, 1/2 marathon and a full one0

i have a similar goal!! i want to do a race in every state, although i would prefer not to do a 5k or 10k. i like doing tough mudders, triathlons, and other endurance races. i like to do a race and see as much of a city or state as possible! the tough mudder in west virginia i just did was amazing, and got to see 10 miles of the landscape!
so far i have New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Chicago, and West Virginia done, with plans to do Connecticut and Pennsylvania next year.
to find races, check out trifind.com. it's not just triathlons, it has 5ks and mud runs listed as well.0 -
In Minnesota I really liked the Get in Gear 10k. It is in April. In North Dakota the Fargo Marathon 5k and 10k are both really good runs. That is in May. Good luck!0

My favorite race so far was the Glow Run 5k... and I am from Florida.
I have done three 5ks and 1 half....
The Glow Run 5k
The Great Mother's Day 5k
The Great Father's Day 5k
Halloween Halfathon0 -
there are a lot of fun races and events in new york city to do. if you are into cycling, you should check out the Five boro bike tour. i did it two years ago, and it is 50 miles of cycling, starting in lower manhattan, passing the world trade center, going through central park, and then going through the other five boros, ending in staten island. don't worry, it's super safe, and they close the streets. and you're only in the bronx for like, 5 miles. and it's a bike tour, so not competitive.
it's usually the first sunday of may, and it's a lottery, so you might not get in, but worth a shot! and bike rentals are available!0 -
10k: Denver Trail at Cherry Creek. It's the best unique-to-Colorado run I did this last summer! I bet there are some great ones in the mountains, too, but I haven't experienced any first hand. Great trails! No date for 2014 yet, but you'll find details here: http://www.denverhalf.com/0

The Crater Lake Rim Runs in Oregon are absolutely spectacular. I did the marathon but there is also a 6.7-mile run, close enough to 10K, don't you think?

In New York - The Tunnel to Towers run is held the last Sunday of Sept. every year. Starts in Brooklyn and runs through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, through the Battery Park Esplanade and ends near the World Trade Center site. It's in honor of a fireman who ran with full fire gear along that route to get to the towers on 9/11. Very inspirational run. I've done it 3 times... I can't do justice to the story of the run, but if you go to www.tunneltotowers.org you can find out more information about Stephen Siller and the run.0
