I gained 5 lbs on my Birthday weekend : (

I have been eating a very strict diet for months and have managed to lose 39 lbs. My boyfriend took me to the ocean for my Birthday this weekend and I slipped up a little and ate some things I usually wouldnt ( salted peanuts, sausage, etc.)and drank 3 coffee stand coffees. Now I am home and I have gained 5 lbs!.. I am super depressed this morning. Any advice or similar experiences would help.Thanks.

Most of it is probably water weight. Eat your normal foods again, and weigh in again next week. You'll see most of it has come off quite easily.

Do you think you ate 17500 extra calories over the weekend?
    I doubt it.

It's most likely water weight, I wouldn't stress it to be honest

Lots of salt. Drink water, eat a banana and give it a couple of days to stabilize.
  • I didn't measure while my family was in town and then got sick and gained. Within a week of being back in the swing it fell back off. I know for me it was a lot of water weight from eating what I shouldn't as well as not drinking enough water.

Did you enjoy your birthday weekend away? If so I would say that it was worth it!

Totally a lot of water weight. I did something pretty similar this weekend (had guests, drank a bit, ate with no regard to anything), jumped on the scale Sunday night just out of curiosity, was up 5 lbs. Jumped on the scale yesterday, was down to only half of a pound more than what I weighed at the end of last week. Just keep drinking water and lower your salt intake.

I "gained" two and a half pounds overnight once. I had eaten some salty food and didn't drink much water. I drank lots of water the next day and the "gained" weight was gone. I agree 100% with the other people who've commented - it's water weight. Just get back on track and you'll be just fine. :drinker:

Happy late birthday!! My birthday was Nov 3, and I totally feel your 'pain'! I have been struggling with gaining and losing the same 3 lb since then, and it is frustrating.

Others have given you great advice already...just eat right, drink plenty of water, and the weight will fall off again!

Another way I like to view it is...you've already made progress. Whether you're down 5, 20, 50, or 200 lb...you are in a much better place than wherever you began! It is nuts for me to think "I failed" when I've lost so much since March when I started MFP. Even if I stayed at the same weight from now 'til the end of the year, I still did not fail.

Yup! Probably just water weight and maybe you're not yet done digesting, some food takes days to digest such as meat so if you ate a lot of meat, that could be the culprit. Eat lots of fiber and deink lots of water so you can flush it all out :)

The day I ran a half marathon, then ate a bunch of food (not as much as I burned running), I gained 9 pounds.

It was gone in 4 or 5 days.

You should pat yourself on the back for having a wonderful weekend, then get back to work on losing the weight.

    Happy birthday.

Given the math, it's nary impossible that you put on five pounds of fat. What you did is had a higher sodium intake which is causing you to retain some water. If you ate more carbs than normal you also replenished your chronically depleted glycogen stores. This is all math...for you to have actually gained 5 Lbs of fat you would have had to consume 17,500 calories over your MAINTENANCE level of calories which is a pretty tall order over the course of a weekend, even if you went frackin' nuts.
  • Thanks everyone! I will give it a few days and see if its off.

Back to water, veggies, and lean meats for me : )
