Must run in Biston: the B.A.A. 5k the day before the Boston Marathon. It crosses the marathon finish line. Will probably close out quickly this year given 2013's events. It's a fun little course that showcases Back Bay, goes around the public garden and you get a little of the feeling the marathoners get when they have to climb that slight incline on Hereford street before turning onto Boylston and seeing how far away the finish line looks when you're ready to be done running. Also you get to pick up your race package at the marathon expo. The BAA 10k in June is awesome too!0

Cellcom race in Green Bay, WI if you're a football fan. You run through Lambeau field right before the finish. It has a 5K, 1/2 & full marathon
Sold!!! I am telling my husband about this one! Sounds like a blast and what a better ending to a race then to run on Lambeau field!0 -
The PF CHang's Rock n Roll Marathons in several states is always fun. In Az. it's in Feb . It is also held in San Diego . just Google Rock n Roll Marathon, they have a 5K, 1/2 marathon and a full one0

i have a similar goal!! i want to do a race in every state, although i would prefer not to do a 5k or 10k. i like doing tough mudders, triathlons, and other endurance races. i like to do a race and see as much of a city or state as possible! the tough mudder in west virginia i just did was amazing, and got to see 10 miles of the landscape!
so far i have New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Chicago, and West Virginia done, with plans to do Connecticut and Pennsylvania next year.
to find races, check out trifind.com. it's not just triathlons, it has 5ks and mud runs listed as well.0 -
In Minnesota I really liked the Get in Gear 10k. It is in April. In North Dakota the Fargo Marathon 5k and 10k are both really good runs. That is in May. Good luck!0

there are a lot of fun races and events in new york city to do. if you are into cycling, you should check out the Five boro bike tour. i did it two years ago, and it is 50 miles of cycling, starting in lower manhattan, passing the world trade center, going through central park, and then going through the other five boros, ending in staten island. don't worry, it's super safe, and they close the streets. and you're only in the bronx for like, 5 miles. and it's a bike tour, so not competitive.
it's usually the first sunday of may, and it's a lottery, so you might not get in, but worth a shot! and bike rentals are available!0 -
10k: Denver Trail at Cherry Creek. It's the best unique-to-Colorado run I did this last summer! I bet there are some great ones in the mountains, too, but I haven't experienced any first hand. Great trails! No date for 2014 yet, but you'll find details here: http://www.denverhalf.com/0

The Crater Lake Rim Runs in Oregon are absolutely spectacular. I did the marathon but there is also a 6.7-mile run, close enough to 10K, don't you think?

In New York - The Tunnel to Towers run is held the last Sunday of Sept. every year. Starts in Brooklyn and runs through the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, through the Battery Park Esplanade and ends near the World Trade Center site. It's in honor of a fireman who ran with full fire gear along that route to get to the towers on 9/11. Very inspirational run. I've done it 3 times... I can't do justice to the story of the run, but if you go to www.tunneltotowers.org you can find out more information about Stephen Siller and the run.0

Columbus, Ohio just held their first Ohio State 4 Miler on November 10th. The course is around Ohio State campus and the race ends on the 50 yard line inside Ohio Stadium, otherwise known as the Horseshoe or the Shoe. The medal was awesome, an almost 3 dimensional replica of the stadium. They plan on making it a yearly event, so if you're in the area in November, it would definitely be one to check out.
Also, the Capital City Quarter Marathon in May or the Emerald City Quarter Marathon in August are nice ones to run, with great finisher medals. M3S Sports is a good local (to columbus) race organization, that hosts several event throughout the year, you can check them out.
Also! the Air Force Marathon at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, they offer both 10k and 5k distances. It takes place in the middle of September. OR! The Flying Pig Marathon in Cincinnati in May also has a 10k/5k option. Or the Cleveland Marathon 10K/5K option in Mid-May, their medal has a spinning guitar.
Sorry.. I'm new to running and am very excited about finding new races to run in the area.
I will second the U.S. Air Force 10K in Dayton, OH. You get to run in an area not normally open to civilians. It's on September 20, 2014. The medal is great, and in past years, they've had a flyover of the featured plane. Lots of military personnel running in full gear. It's very surreal. http://www.usafmarathon.com/0 -
Theres a Ben and Jerrys 5k in Burlington VT you can do
ETA: here's the link: http://brainfreezer5k.com/home/
Here's the link for jbsports in CT: http://www.jbsports.com/
And the Manchester CT Road Race I mentioned before: http://www.manchesterroadrace.com/0 -
Also, I'm doing this one in NH on Thanksgiving: http://www.millenniumrunning.com/thanksgiving
It's mostly flat, the one hill is going downhill.
For NH races, look for ones along the seacoast region if you're not used to hills0 -

Tufts 10K for women in Boston on Columbus Day. Great course, mostly flat, through back bay and along the Charles River. 7000+ plus women celebrating strong healthy women. It's a great atmosphere, and my favorite race every year.0
