Are BMI calculators accurate?

I have gone from being 111.5kg to 94.5kg. I am happy with my progress so far.
According to the BMI calculator, i have gone from BMI of 37 to around 31.5. My goal weight is around 85kg which would give me a BMI of 28.5 but still deem me to be overweight.

How accurate are these?
I want to be healthy, but I will not get myself down to 65kg to do so..

Any thoughts?

BMI is a simple ratio of height and weight. Doesn't account for your musculature, which can get amusing with guys. The category labels are general guidelines, and perhaps the start of a discussion.

If you're happy with the way you look and feel at 85 kg, great. Guys your height (~173 cm?) can be that weight and healthy. My guess is you'll still be over 20% bodyfat at that point, unless you've been working out or participating in a strength sport. So no abs, but of course an improvement over the current situation.

You'd start hitting BMI "normal" around 75 kgs, which can be a very fit and athletic weight for your height.

Here's Maurice Greene at 75 kgs and 176 cm:

  • Bmi isnt really accurate. I had a fitness trainer who has over 20 years of experience in the fitness industry explain to me that a guy can have a body fat percentage of 10 but can still have a bmi of 30. Bmi is based of ur weight and height so even if ur a body builder u might have a bmi that puts u overweight. Body fat percentage is the amount of fat inside ur body around ur organs which is wat u have to worry about more so than bmi.

BMI is a useful indicator for the vast majority of us.
