How does Runkeeper calculate calories?

Does anyone know if it includes elevation in the calculation?

I run at sea level - like, I tend to go on a path right next to the water, so we're talking the water being 2 feet to the side of me, and maybe 2 feet below me. There may be a slight decline of, ooh, 3 feet from where I start running down to the waterfront path, and then maybe the same 3 feet climb as I leave the path and head back. And yet, Runkeeper calculated that this morning's run had a total climb of 264 feet. Which seems like utter nonsense to me.

So....does anyone know if Runkeeper is including the "climb" when calculating my exercise calories? If so, is there any way to turn it off and get a slightly more accurate estimate? I know it's only an estimate anyway, as I'm not wearing a HRM. But still.
