I'm still confused about what TDEE is..

I'm on a website to calculate my TDEE at my current weight, and then what it will be again at my goal weight, with the amount of times I exercise (about 3 times a week).

It's saying that right now, my BMR is 1535 cals/day, and TDEE is 2110 cals/day.
And at my goal weight, my BMR is 1285 cals/day and my TDEE is 1766 cals/day.

BMR is what I burn everyday if I were to just sit and be a couch potato all day, yes? So I'm just unsure of what TDEE is supposed to be.. Might be a stupid question to ask, sorry. I just have no clue. I tried Googling it but I couldn't find a good answer really..

  • BMR (Basal Metabolic Rate) = The energy needed by your body just to stay alive. This is not being a couch potato this is comatose level existence.

    TDEE (Total Daily Energy Expenditure) = The energy needed by your body to stay alive, get up, go to the bathroom, sit on the sofa, use the remote, fix your food, etc. This is your BMR plus an estimate as to how much additional energy you are going to use everyday doing everyday things.

    Your TDEE is usually calculated as a percentage of your BMR. In your case the website is saying that because you exercise 3 times a week you are going to be burning approximately 37% more calories per day. This 37% additional calories includes the exercising, the going to the bathroom, walking to your car and other things involved in living.

    It is really important to understand that this is just an estimate. It is an estimate based on an average of a bunch of people who were guinea pigs for a study. It may not represent YOU. It may come close, but you need to take it with a grain of salt and, by measuring your supposed calorie deficit and weight loss over a couple of months, you should be able to come up with a better number for yourself.

    So my BMR is the minimum I should be eating a day just to function? 1535 calories? Cause for the past year I've been eating 1200 a day. That's what MFP tells me to eat a day to lose 2 pounds a week..
