Snacking on fruit?

I LOOOOOVE fruit. All kinds and I used to eat a lot of it.

But since I started counting my calories, I don't want to "waste" them on fruit.

If I had my 5 servings of fruit/vegetables a day, I'd eat nothing else on 1220kcal a day. So I am craving fruit every day :(
I try to eat just one apple or an orange a day - but I want more.

I never realized fruit is that high on calories!

How do you handle that? Is eating fruit going to stop my weight loss?

Fruit is good but more than half of your fruit and veggies should come from veggies. If you eat 5 servings at least 3 should be veggies. If you eat 7 at least 4 should be from veggies. Fruit has a lot of sugar and although it is good for you, you can have too much.

Well you are really supposed to get 2 fruit servings, so it's not that surprising to me.

My bf makes me a fruit salad that I have with breakfast or dinner. Strawberries, bananas, and pineapple with OJ. That way I can have more kinds of fruit but the same 100 or so cals.

Veggies shouldn't put you that high though. Spinach and lettuce are about 20 per serving, carrots, peppers and tomatoes about 25-35. So if you have 5 servings of veggies you are between 100-150 cals. And the fruit should be around 1-200.

I love fruit. I am right there with you on eating it multiple times a day. In fact I use to do that over my summer break from college. However, you need to realize that it is high in sugar and almost 100 calories per apple or orange. I would suggest planning out when and what you are going to eat for the rest of the day in the morning. That way you can mix up the fruit you eat and how much of it you eat each day. Also, you could always walk/jog a mile or so and reward yourself with a piece of fruit from the calories burned. It's just a matter of self control and a little planning. I would also suggest trying different types of berries. They can be a little more expensive but they are lower in sugar than most fruit and easier to "snack" on.

Some days I eat a LOT of fruit and go over my sugars, but the way I look at it is if your under your calories or not for that day. I can get pretty full on 2 apples, and that's only around 120 cal? Fruit is a way better snack than candy, so there ya go. :)
  • I love fruit & veggies .... I have grapefruit ( 100 calories) for breakfast .. I snack alot on cauliflower w/ 2tbs of marzetti classic ranch .(alot of times it's my lunch) ..I snack alot on carrots....you can have 30 baby carrots & it's hardly any calories. (very filling) ..I'll have 1 or 2 oranges later for a snack...just balancing.

I am the same way, love my fruits. The V.A. has me on 210 grams total carbs per day, and talk about eating up the carbs as well as calories, one large apple is equal to a meal just about.

I Love my Fruits..I eat all types..and i still lose weight. go ahead and Enjoy your Fruits.

The best thing about fruits is that it fills you up pretty quick..as some one pointed out..two small apples and you are full..3 cheers to Fiber
  • I love my fruits as well. But they are always making me go over my sugars, so I'll throw in some celery stalks or carrots as filler.

I love fruit and I eat whatever I like, when I like. I don't watch for calories of fruit, nor sugar. I consider all the calories and sugars etc from fruit as being good things, as opposed to bread, pasta, chocolate or others, and I prefer to have my belly full of fruit rather than full of anything else which isn't as healthy.
But then, I am not really the best person to give you advice, as I don't watch my calories THAT much, being over my goal most of the times :blushing:

Once you're off proper sugar, it's amazing how sweet natural vegetables can be.

I've set up my food diary for six "meals" per day - breakfast - morning snack - lunch - afternoon snack - dinner - evening snack.

Breakfast is a latte in a beer mug (skim milk) and a bowl of nature's path oatmeal (really good stuff)

Morning and afternoon snacks are generally fruit, but I'm avoiding oranges and big apples because they're a ton of calories. Look for the little ones. I'm a sucker for concord grapes. Plums are great, strawberries are great too. Weigh everything, preferably by grams because it's a small increment, and experiment with different fruits. Apples and oranges are pretty boring after a while. Have you ever had lichees or longans?

It's easy to weigh your fruits and veggies to take to work while you're getting breakfast ready.

Lunch is usually a lot of veggies.. 150g of peppers, 100g of cucumber, 100g tomatoes (the latter technically a fruit anyway)

Dinner usually is a spinach salad as an appetizer with cut up fruit and a fruit dressing and some other thing with meat.

Evening snack is almost invariably a couple of lifestyle cookies or an ounce of cheddar cheese.
