Stressed about eating while Family is visiting

Hi All
My family is coming into town for the weekend and they've never been to the city we live in (which is famous for lots of delicious food and restaurants) so they are going to want to eat out for basically every meal. Lots of unhealthy food. I eat very healthy and very clean. I exercise a lot and I like to be in control of what I eat. I know that I can eat healthy at most restaurants but the thing with my family is, they always make comments about what i'm eating. They'll give me a hard time if I don't eat what they're all eating. And not all the restaurants have healthy options (i looked at the menus). I'm stressed because it'll be 3 days of this and I'm super uncomfortable with it. I would much rather eat my own food. Does anyone have any tips or just support? I'm really stressed about it. I want to have a good time but I also am afraid that being around all that food will make me want to binge and then I'll feel like crap. I'm planning on indulging in one good meal but I just can't handle that many unhealthy meals in a row. Help please!

No help... but a note in solidarity- my family visited this weekend and it was really hard. We ate out, and my mom even kindly offered to bring a meal but it was so fatty that I couldn't eat very much and the felt really hungry later.
What I tried to do was just eat smaller portions of everything. Not a perfect solution- but it's about all I could control.
However, I do need to get a lot more comfortable with this- I can't be stressed about eating with my family for the rest of my life. I guess it's just going to be about balance.0 -

I just had a similar experience, I went on a 4 day holiday where almost every meal was had at a restaurant. I made some healthy choices but a lot of the time I just had the burger and chips deal or the beer battered fish, because it was cheaper and someone else was paying (I felt bad okay). I usually eat a 1200 cal diet, I'm super strict, I measure the lot. This 4 day bender only set me back some water weight which came off after 2 days of being home and back in the swing of things Just relax and enjoy0

My two cents is that if it's just for 3 days, it won't affect you that much physically. If you're eating your very healthy and very clean foods 362 days out of the year, 3 days is a drop in the bucket. Your family (I'm assuming parents/siblings?) won't be around forever, so this is a very minor inconvenience at worst. I say grin, bear it, eat some stuff you might not normally eat, and get back on the wagon once they're gone. Keep in mind also that you don't have to eat the entire plate at the restaurant. Eat a smaller portion, doggy-bag the rest, stick it in the fridge, and toss it once they leave.0 -
Just try to eat in moderation and order some healthier meals when possible. Assuming you don't get the fattiest thing every time you go out, you shouldn't really gain anything significant. Try to keep telling yourself it won't set you back more than a week, max. Enjoy the delicious, too0

Several members of my family are significantly overweight and have so far been unable or unwilling to modify their eating habits, so I have faced this issue on more than one occasion. My thought is that you've been proactive in checking out menus and such, so make restaurant suggestions that offer choices that fit your food preferences to the degree possible. I"d also be very confident in telling your family about how much you enjoy the foods you pick to eat, even if these choices don't appeal to them.
I've become very assertive in advising family members that my food choices aren't a "diet", but rather, my preferred way of eating. Make no apologies!! Tell them that you're NOT depriving yourself, but rather , you've made a decision that you plan to eat only one higher calorie meal over the weekend and that is sufficient for you. Eventually, your family will probably come around to respecting your choices and things will get easier. Best of luck to you.0 -
This is a bugaboo for lots of us. I definitely relate to the control issue with regards to food.
Mostly I eat "my food" ahead of a restaurant meal.
We try to recommend (moderately) more healthy restaurants, such as they are. Then I order as carefully as I can, asking for no salt, no oil, if possible.
Sometimes I just have water, or hot tea (I carry my favorite tea with me) and try to focus on the people at the table, the conversation, the company. People are uncomfortable if one person is not eating, but after awhile the concern goes away and things go smoothly after that.
Sometimes I say I have health issues with high sodium (this is true) or sweet, rich foods (also true) and have to watch it carefully. Health issues are easier for people to accept. Ethical reasons are too political to bring up unless someone is really interested.
In spite of the occasional roll of the eyes or a snarky comment, most friends and family already know I would rather not eat at all than eat the average restaurant fare.
The thing is, you really ARE in control of what goes in your mouth and you don't need to justify it to anyone. But I try to keep it cordial and comfortable for others, because as my brother said, "you can't argue with her results."
There's no reason to argue or be defensive about it; it just is what it is and you are entitled to do what you feel is best for you.

Drink A full glass of water before you go. Ask for water when you get there. Eat salad first and then eat in moderation and enjoy. Just eat the one thing you want the most and savor it...slowly. enjoy the conversation and have fun. Skip the fries and the way bad stuff. Just remember you can take some home as left overs. and it will be okay you can bounce back from 3 days just take them for a long walk too...go to a movie and have popcorn together laugh and say you are too full to eat now! lol.:flowerforyou:0

You could try to have breakfast or lunch at home, and save the eating out for the evening. When you do....
You could try Devon or McCormick and Schmidt in River Northish - both will do seafood grilled for you. And M&S is a chain so you can get nutritional info online, I bet.
In addition, a high quality steak house will likely grill you a lean cut (ask for no butter) and you can order your sides ala carte. Somewhere like Gibsons, (Viagra Triangle) Smith & Wollensky, (by house of blues) or Chop House (Kinzie and Wells)
There are a couple of smaller places that do interesting vegetarian/vegan/raw stuff, like Karyn's (karynraw.com) - really good stuff and very healthy if you can sell your family on it.
If you have good self control, you could try Zed 451. It's a brazillian steak house style restaurant with American food, so you'll overeat if you aren't careful BUT they have lots and lots of choices, and everyone in your party can have what they want so no judging. www.zed451.com Looking at the menu right now, they have a salmon ceviche, a kale and quinoa salad, a roasted cauliflower and watermelon salad, etc. on the harvest table.

I just usually eat an appetizer or two instead of a main plate: A salad or app during appetizers and an appetizer as main. I say I'm not very hungry if anyone says anything. I really don't eat big meals, so a whole dinner portion is too big!
I do usually like to have a glass or two of wine when I'm out, so I still splurge. I love appetizers. Chefs often get so good and creative, especially with seafood! Yum0
