4'11 and 54 years old makes loosing very difficult

    I am a year older and it has taken me 4 and half years to lose 57 pounds so it can be done. I did it through portion control at first and walking. When I got closer to my goal, I found that portion control needed to change to counting my calories. I also go to a Pilates class twice a week. So the long and short of it is to get moving and count those calories as well as having lots of patience.

    Lord yes. 5'0" and 54yrs old. Takes time and patience but can be done.

    Hi...I'm 58 and it took me a total of 10 years to loose 80 pounds. I've just recently gained 20 of it back so I'm back in the weight loss saddle once again. I'd love to have new friends our age to encourage and learn from. We CAN move and eat right....Let's join together. Add me and we'll work together...

    Thanks for the replies ! This could be easier having some extra encouragement. Counting calories seems to shed a new light on portion control. I just started this a week ago. I had lost 30 pounds, kept it off for 10 years but I found it. And so the journey begins.

    Good luck dmarie. I don't know if you are aware of it or not but there is an open forum called 'women ages 50+' that might be what you need to keep you encouraged. We are all a group of women, ages 50+ of course, that are or have struggled with the exact same thing you are going through. We try to be a family to each other and talk about our diet, lives, families , just whatever you are comfortable talking about. Most of all we are there to encourage and pick each other up.
  • Always a struggle, but with the right friends to keep you motivated, it helps... I just joined this site last week and have an incredible amount of weight to lose, so also looking for friends so we can motivate and help or just chat.... Feel free to add me... :smile:

    I am 56 and 5'4" it has taken me 3+ years (April 2010 when I started this journey) to shed 120 lbs-thinking it will be another 6 months for the last 30-40 to go, one day, choice and meal at a time

    Hi, I am a tiny bit taller than you, 5'1", and have lost 80 pounds this year since March. Lots of watching my calories and walking!! You can do this!!! It isn't easy, but it is so worth it!!!

    5'2" and on the umpty-ninth diet of my life. This round I have been dieting for 2 weeks. I don't enjoy cooking so unless I am accountable for counting calories I eat a poor diet which causes me to gain. I really want to succeed this time. So far so good. I need to keep at this.

    So the 2 things that'll make this much harder is in general lower eating levels.

    Because you are older, and because you are shorter.

    So solutions aren't too bad.

    Get taller, oh, well, ok .......

    Metabolism is said to go down with age, but that is only because people move less and lose muscle mass on average as they age.

    So do everything you can not to lose any, and in fact, even in 40-50's, many on friends list are lifting weights. That will keep base metabolism up, and help increase it.

    Then be active all day, outside of exercise.
    Eat enough protein, take a reasonable deficit. For you and 23 lbs, that means 1 lb weekly.

  • I can certainly relate. As a former instructor an body builder I never had a problem with weight, but after a robbery at
    gunpoint and developing a thyroid disorder I am now struggling. I gained weight from the 5 meds I was on, and lost it just
    doing what I knew I had to do, then my boyfriend had a stroke last thanksgiving and we used the buddy system to quit smoking.
    I gained back what I lost, and It's bee a real wake up call for me knowing how people can get depressed because they are trying,
    yet seeing no real difference. I am walking that walk for a lousy 10 lbs that are driving me crazy! Let me start by saying that all My life I had a body image disorder which is why I went into body building to begin with! I became obsessed, and I was one of those people who changed outfits three times before I would even leave the house. I am now 60 yrs old, not as obsessed, but not quite comfortable with myself! The thing bothering me most is everyone is telling me how great I look at 127 lbs compared to my 106lbs!
    As I was making progress with my illness and depression I gained not because of eating, but because of not eating. What I did was put my body in starvation mode, so it wants to hang onto every morsel it can get! I'm doing 1200 calories a day, and I'm forcing myself to eat! One pill alone is an amphetamine which kills my appetite. I am 5'2" where I have gained is my waist and thighs. My measurements were Always 34B- 27- 35, now 36C- 30-37, When I look at my charts Now for my age I am on target in every area.

    I drink tons of water and I eat what I want in moderation. I also have one day a week called Discretionary calories. That's a treat day where you can eat what you want without feeling guilt, and it actually keeps you satisfied the other 6 days as well as giving you something to look forward to. I am still a size 6 just more curvy, but I swim in an 8 petite! That's what's driving me bonkers, I am right between sizes! UGH! I packed aw, he had 10 blood clots in the middle of his brainay so many clothes but refuse to throw them away or donate them because we're talking about 3/4 of an inch here, but it's enough that I'm not pulling or tugging! Having PTSD, the pills , the disease etc has changed my life. I have days where I am like a tornado, just going, going, going I also have other days where I can't force myself to move! We all know that as we get older we have hormonal changes. and if you know anything about thyroid and what it does, you know that it controls your hormones, and your entire metabolism, not to mention everything, and every organ in your body! The meds they give you controls all the side effects of the disease. I take about 60 per week, three of them cause weight gain, The propranolol which stops my heart racing and the blood crashing against the walls of my heart. It is called a Beta Blocker. Then two anti depressants, and lastly the pill that keeps my thyroid levels in range! We have been trying to achieve this now for three years now. I feel blessed to be alive after having a gun to my head, I now have two beautiful Grands, a boy and a girl who I never would have met, and lastly I saved my boyfriends life according to all the Doctors who wanted to know what field of medicine I was practicing in! Lol, but at the same time I have been living a nightmare with all the residual effects. I thank God my boyfriend mad a complete recovery. He had 10 blood clots in the middle of his brain that were so deep they were never able to affect his motor skills , memory etc! You are probably saying after all this what is she complaining about! Oh by the way, 3 weeks ago I totaled my car! You know how frustrating it has been for you so you can imagine what it has been like for me being a fitness freak all my life! I had my body completely under control, and now I don't, nor do I have anything in or about my life to remind me of the person I use to be, and am not now. It's a big adjustment, put I'll keep plugging away! I am always here, and tell everybody if they need any suggestions let me know, I still recall all my fitness routines, I'm just being held by my thoughts that never slow down. So to make a long story short, if you want to request me feel free to do so, and although I am having problems because of my thyroid that I can't control, I'm always willing to help others until I find my own middle ground!

    There is no doubt that being a short, older, woman makes losing weight harder. I resent it but it can be done. We simply can't eat like other people do. I'm 5'2" and 49 years old.

    I'm 50+ with hypothyroidism. Yep. It's a struggle some days but, you have to keep on trucking.

    I'm 4'11" but younger and have been yo-yo dieting forever.
    I think I've turned the corner with the 5:2 FAST diet.
    I'm starting week 7 and the diet has been incredibly EASY and doable.
    Basically, I've only had to really watch what I eat 2 days out of the week. So instead of feeling deprived every day, I only have to fast for 2 days a week.

    I recommend reading about it and the documentary.
    Even after I lose my last 8 pounds to reach UGW, I'll still do it for the health benefits, maybe switch to 6:1.
