Ok, so I've decided that on Thanksgiving, I'm going to give myself a little leeway and enjoy the day with my family, while still eating sensibly. I'll be careful, but not necessarily stringent. But since I do log everything, how do I log foods that my cousin cooks so that the calories are reasonably correctly represented? Also, since it's a family meal, I don't really want to take my scale and weigh everything. Just wanting to know how to log appropriately. Thanks!

You can go one of two ways, either don't worry about it watch your portion sizes and snacking and enjoy the day, or find out what she is cooking look up the before hand and over guestimate the portion size and calories.

For me its only one day, screw it as long as you don't OTT and eat everything in sight, live a little.

    I found this:

    Grain Products Vegetables, and Fruit
    1 cup cereal flakes = 1 fist
    1 pancake = 1 compact disc
1/2 cup cooked rice, pasta or potato = 1/2 baseball
1 oz slice of bread = 1 cassette tape 1 cup of salad greens = 1 baseball
    1 baked potato = 1 fist
    1 medium piece fruit = 1 baseball
    1/2 cup fresh fruit = 1/2 baseball
    1/4 cup raisins = 1 large egg

Dairy and Cheese Meat and Protein Alternatives
    1 1/2 oz cheese = 4 stacked dice
1/2 cup ice cream = 1/2 baseball 3 oz meat, fish, or poultry = 1 deck of cards
    3 oz grilled/baked fish fillet = 1 checkbook
2 tablespoons peanut butter = 1 ping pong ball

    Fats
1 teaspoon margarine, butter, or spreads = 1 dice

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for the responses! Great to know the serving size comparisons LOL!

I'll probably just enjoy carefully and log in what I eat in notes if I can't find anything in the food database - just to keep a record.

When I am eating food others cooked/baked, I just try to approximate it conservatively in my diary. The other day I was at a party and had a piece of walnut bread, two brownies, and a few other things. I just found entries that approximated what I thought I ate, and that's about all you can do. Again, it's one day and it won't completely blow your week/month, especially if you aren't going crazy and Eating All The Food.

I was doing a bit of research and they have the "typical" number of calories that one eats based on their thanksgiving preferences..you can google it...there is no way in hell I am gonna do much more than perhaps add quick calories for thanksgiving...ha ha :)
