Without gym alone?

I won't be going to a gym until December. I also won't have anyone to work out with for motivation. Does anyone have any suggestions on getting into shape without a gym?

    I love my home workouts. I refuse to pay for a gym membership. I workout at home using beach body programs and then am part of a group where I post accountability pics and we share information about struggles & success in addition to using MFP. Find something you like.

    Walking, cycling if you have a bike are good choices.

    Jogging, riding your bike, brisk walks, jump rope, etc for cardio

    Cheap set of dumbbells off of Craigslist, used weight bench, pullup bar, pushups, etc for weight training

    Those will cost you very little to nothing and will help get you started.

    I lost around 80 lbs. without a gym membership. I worked out at home using fitness dvd's/Youtube videos, lifting weights using 5 - 25 lbs dumbbells, bodyweight exercises and power walking outdoors mainly. For me the key was to try different workouts and figure out what I liked and what I didn't like. For example I learned I don't care for dancey type workouts so Zumba is not for me.

    i agree with the above advice, along with body weight exercises. you can google different routines that incorporate squats, lunges, jumping S&L, pushups, dips, etc. resistance bands can give you weight training workouts as well. walking, running, stairs, jumping jacks, jump rope or videos for cardio. its very doable!
  • I do all my workouts at home as my closest gym is about 40 mins drive so I ride my exercise bike, walk and walk at home with leslie sansone do cardio at home

    I got fit and lost weight without a gym membership, and without anyone else to work out with. I started just with walking, moved onto running (used the couch25k app). I do yoga in my own home and lift weights in my own home. If you don't have weights, google "body weight exercises" as there are loads you can do. Youtube has a lot of free videos. Lots of people like doing exercise DVDs in their own home (not my cup of tea, but it works for a lot of people).

    Set small goals for yourself to keep you motivated and then invest in a DVD that incorporates strength and cardio using body weight and a small set of dumb bells if you have a set. Inside Out Method is a great one that you can modify and then move up to the harder level and the pack comes with 8 different workouts to 2-20 minute ones and 2-hour long ones.

    Other workout options you could look into that do require some money are sandbag training and TRX Suspension training.

    You can also look on bodybuilding.com's exercise database for ideas. You can search for body only or none for exercises not requiring equipment.
  • Home workout will kick a gym results out of the water. How about trying P90x Insanity Body beast supreme 90 revabs Jillian michaels. They all work there also cycling hiking swimming etc.

    I Googled "shym" but didn't get a meaning, but I think I get your vibe!

    Definitely bodyweight, so long a you keep progressing the exercises so you keep challenging the muscles you are working as soon as one exercise gets too comfortable.

    Maybe look up a book/website/app called You Are Your Own Gym for ideas on set programmes to follow.

    Cardio needs no gym. Just run.

    Also do some pushups. It's not ideal, but you can get in shape with some bodyweight exercises. Just remember that there's no substitute for good old fashioned free weights.

    Bodyweight routines - properly put together and within effective intensity ranges are a perfectly good alternative to good old free-weights.

    I lost ALL the weight without even thinking about a gym. All I had was a 60$ bicycle, and healthy food. :-)

    Sprints, jump rope, wall sits, v ups, planks, supermans, moutain climbers, burpees, squats, walking lunges, lunges, if you have steps you can use those! Fill a duffle bag with clothes/shoes/shampoo bottles(full) and use it as weight or like a sandbag and do lunges with it. Learn how to do handstand push ups, do yoga poses(can find them on youtube, pinterest, tumblr!

    No gym here! Well okay, starting last week I've been going to use the machines at a local community center. It's great because its been so stormy here lately. It's FREE (!) but hasn't been necessary.

    I'm a walker / slogger. The neighborhood, the local walking track... Even the stairs at work!!

    But I have more weight to shed than you & I'm not striving for muscle definition. Lotsa good suggestions here!

    I work out every day without a gym. I do have an assortment of dumbbells and a barbell. I use those for strength training, and generally different workout DVDs for cardio.

    Ive only been to the gym about 6 times in the 2 1/2 years I've been working out. I have an assortment of Dumbells and Barbells from 2lbs to 30lbs. I love my home workouts and also getting outside on the track or on my bike is great. Ive never been to a Zumba class either. I absolutely LOVE :heart: Zumba :heart: . I have their dvds, I do them off of their youtube channel, wii and the Xbox workouts. Jillian Micheals dvds are great as well.

    Going to the gym gets me in workout mode. Ironically I go in there and do more bodyweight exercises than anything else.

    "Primal Blueprint fitness" is a free ebook that has a great simple program in it comprised of bodyweight exercises and Sprints. Here's a brief summary of the program, but the ebook is worth getting.

    find a system that you like like I like 30 day shred, and just set goals that are attainable, and have a reward for accomplishing it. like mine is an expensive purse once I reach my goal weight. good luck and don't give up.

  • A set of adjustable dumbbells are great for working out at home or if you don't want to get any equipment then just find some good body weight exercise programs online.
