Pregnant; morning sickness & feeling better not eating

I'm just under 2 months pregnant, & my m/s has gotten so bad that I currently feel better when i dont eat. I'm vomiting up to 3 times a day, my current diet consists of lunchables, ice cream, orange juice, etc. Mostly snacklike - light foods. I'm having issues getting my water in, im lucky to drink 2 (16oz) bottles a day. I'm keeping up with my prenatal vitamins, & try to take them after I have a vomit episode so they go in & not come out.

Any suggestions on what I can either take, eat, etc that will make things smoother? I hear this will all stop soon, but I can't help but believe it won't considering my body seems to like how it feels right now.

Help?

I would love to help (currently 5 months pregnant), but I was fortunate not to experience morning sickness. What I have read is some women have found comfort in comfort foods (higher carbs) and maybe food that's more bland, but each person is different. Have you talked w/ your Dr about how bad it is and what to consume? S/he may be more helpful. Hope you feel better soon :frown:

I had severe sickness the entirety of my pregnancy (Hyperemesis gravidarum) and I was lean when I fell pregnant. If your struggling to keep things down for days at a time, or failing to keep water down then you should see your doctor. They need to make sure that you are properly hydrated. Assuming you are properly hydrated then you have nothing to worry about and it will almost certainly stop for you once the placenta takes over properly at 12-14 weeks.

High carb low everything else foods like white bread, white pasta, chips (so long as they aren't oily), potato etc can all help with reducing the sickness, so you could try some of those.

Saltines. Toast. Bananas. Applesauce. Rice. Ginger ale. Those should be your new best friends. Also, call your doctor and tell him/her you need a prescription for Zofran 4mg or 8mg pills. Ask for the dissolving ones since you said its difficult for you to even drink water. Zofran is an antiemetic so it'll stop the nausea and vomiting. It is the best pill for morning sickness.

My doc gave me a freaking miracle drug when I was pregnant and sick. It's expensive so insurance often will only allow you so many, but even splitting them up and taking half helps... Zofran (Ondansetron is the generic name)
  • Ugh, I do not miss those days (I've had 5 pregnancies). Hopefully you'll be lucky enough that the sickness will stop soon. I on the other hand was sick throughout all of the pregnancies.

What I found to be helpful is to keep your blood sugar levels up. Lots of little snacks throughout the day. Especially fruit!! Nothing high in acid though. Also pasta (with light types of sauces and not in high quantities). Plenty of breads too! And try flavoring your water (that's the only way I could and still to this day drink my water). If you feel up to it keeping your activity levels going helps too, nothing exhausting but little tidbits of walking, stretching, etc is very good to help relieve the sickness. You can find prenatal yoga helpful, they have some programs that can help with sickness (and yes, it actually does work when done properly), as well as yoga to help you sleep, and then to help prepare the muscle groups for labor. Good luck sweetie, I hope you can find something helpful!! Congrats on the pregnancy though!!!

I had m/s with both kids for 4-5 mo. (24/7 kind, not just in the morning.) Plain potato was my go-to food. Plain bread (nothing on it). Plain white rice (well, sometimes I put white sugar on it). I'd drink about 2 sips of flat 7-up and toss the can. I didn't need to be put on medicine. And I didn't gain any weight at all till month 7 then it just piled on. Doctor wasn't concerned. Baby was strong. And they were born big and healthy. It helped me to get out in the fresh air and not to be around any trigger-odors, too (coffee, bacon cooking, perfumes).

You have my sympathies....it can be rough.

Some things that helped me when I was in that lovely, lovely part of pregnancy (ha!)

    - Morning Wellness Tea - or any kind of safe herbal tea, like ginger tea, chamomile, peppermint. You can drink these hot, warm, or iced to get your fluids in, and also they help with morning sickness.

    - Gin-gins candy, either the chewable gummy kind or the harder kind you can suck on and let it dissolve on your tongue.

    - Now I ate a bit more adventurous foods than generally recommended, but if you can stomach the flavor, pickled Japanese plums, or Ume, are an old remedy for morning sickness as well as for hangovers. But it's a very strong, acquired taste, so unless you already love Japanese food, it might not be for you. ;)

    - Eat small amounts of good, healthy, simple foods, every so often. Even if you don't feel hungry, have five or six almonds or a handful of dried fruit. Keeping your stomach satiated—not over-full, but just content—helped tremendously for me. If you find something that works, keep eating it, and if you find something doesn't, then don't. It might be that a baked sweet potato with a bit of butter and salt on it is just all you want for three days, and that's ok. Or just simple bone broth. Our bodies are remarkably efficient at getting every last bit of nutrition for the growing baby, it's pretty cool.

    - Sugar, at least for me, made the nausea worse, as did dairy. YMMV.

    - For most women, this part does pass. And if it doesn't, then like rawstrongchic said, you may need to see your doctor. Hyperemesis is awful and I wouldn't wish it on anyone, but there are things you can do to help. :)

    Hang in there!

I asked my doctor about this (I had been told I had Hyperemesis Gravidarium, which is RIDICULOUSLY severe morning sickness. She told me to take an antihistamine (as these are not harmful for baby) It worked almost immediately, my morning sickness was so severe that it didn't end it completely, but I was finally able to keep a glass of water down without it coming back up, STILL COLD, 5 seconds after a sip.

I too have hyperemisis. My morning sickness gets so extreme that I am dry heaving for 20 minutes after throwing up all the food and all the stomach acid - I did this every day all day long! I also tried to stop eating in hopes it would help, if I even sipped water I would immediately throw it up. After losing 30lbs in just the first few weeks with my daughter in was placed on a PICC line IV because I was severely dehydrated. They would inject the Zofran into my IV and I had found my cure.
This time, I started getting deathly I'll again right away. I remember the Zofran being insanely and outrageously expensive and was worried about the costs but had to have it. I went to my doctor, who said that it WAS very expensive - years ago when I had my daughter and it is not now. I got my bottle of Zofran for $9 (granted, this is after my insurance paid their half.)
And, I have my cure again. I wish I could tell you something more accessible than that. But, I honestly have tried everything. Anti-nausea medication has been my only relief.

I was on medicaid at the time, so maybe that is why they wouldn't pay for it. My husband works in a pharma warehouse now. I wonder what the cost is for the actual pharmacies.... I should ask him. It's usually something ridiculous like 4 times LESS than what the consumer pays...or worse/.
  • I've not ever been pregnant so I'm not sure if this will helpful or fit into the rules of healthy pregnant eating, but when I'm crazy hungover (lol) and can't keep water down, I make pedialyte with the powdered mix and water, then mix that with sprite. Its sugary but it helps me with the dehydration factor. Good luck!!

That would be interesting to see the costs on their end. My doctor said it did used to be ridiculously expensive when it was new, now it is not.
I am hoping the medication I need for other health problems does the same thing. The medication is brand new right now and not affordable at all. I really hope that changes.
