Cyclists out there?

I've been thinking a lot about what I will do when I meet my weight-loss goals. One of my goals - to lose 100lbs - will put me at a weight where I think I can trade in my current heavy steel-frame bike for a lighter, faster, aluminium bike.
It'll take a year so I have plenty of time to save for it. I want something that is versatile and can handle a little off-road, but not a mountain bike.
My current ride is a Raleigh Detour

And this has me sitting in a more upright position. I'm wanting to get in more of a "saddle above the handlebars" position on my next bike.
Any thoughts on something I can drool over and put on my dream board?

I have this one and really like it: http://www.specialized.com/us/en/bikes/fitness/vita/vita-
Are you sure you couldn't get an aluminum framed bike now? I'm not sure what the weight limits are, but I have been riding one since before I lost weight and it was never an issue.0 -

These are nice, could do anything from rail trail riding to touring if you wanted to :flowerforyou:0 -
I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to have this one but I will never be able to afford it.
Instead I will likely be purchasing this one with the Income Tax Refund I get.

I love my Speclalized but mine is a road bike not for off road.0

I would like a road bike, but the debris that I encounter on even the paved trails I used would make that a rough road indeed.0 -

I just picked up this bad boy!
It's rained every day since and looking like snow this weekend. Sure looks nice in the garage though.0 -
I would like to get into biking. Thanks for posting cuz eventually I want to get a new bike too.:happy:0

Sounds like you are describing a cross bike. Pretty much all of the majors have them and depending on your budget Disc brakes are really nice, something like this: http://www.trekbikes.com/us/en/bikes/road/cyclocross/crossrip/crossrip_limited/#0

OMG, internal cable routing would be so awesome.0 -

Agree - get a Cyclocross. I have an Trek X01 II've had for about 5 years and I love it. It's so fun to go flying past Mountain Bikes on gravel trails. It's not bad on pavement either.0 -
Yup, defo sounding like a cyclocross would be right for you. Any idea on budget? You can spend anything from $6-700 to $8000+

Very nice but pricey.
Best option would probably be to find a local bike shop and go and talk to them. People can list bikes all day long but you'll ideally want to try a few before you buy, see what feels good.0 -
My primary bike is a hybrid (Jamus Allegro). Good for roads and the KATY trail. It is geared somewhere between a mountain bike and a street bike. When I do the trail, I can usually pass the mountain bikers since my bike is geared higher but I can keep up with the "roadies" when I ride there.
My back-up bike is a Trek Mt. bike (circa 1997). There are a bunches of choices. Shop, shop, shop, and get one that fits. A good fit is king.0 -
