An Uphill Battle ahead of me

Hi my name is Terri I am soon to be 39 years old and really need to lose about 100 pounds.. I have had my gallbladder removed, recently diagnosed with a thyroid issue, and not enough good cholesterol. So here I am for the millionth time attempting the diet of my life....Lol
My mother in law came to visit and wow she had lost a ton of weight since the last time I has seen her ( About 6 months ) so naturally I was curious how....and of course now I am REALLY trying.. Been about a month now not sure it's going to work for me since I am not sure I have lost anything....I just bought a scale about a week ago and so far NO movement to my favor.
The diet is no matter what one item of carb a day so if I have a small bowl of cereal for breakfast then the rest the day is no carb,no calorie counting or anything.. Just extremely low carb basically..
I also should mention that even though I am NOT a diabetic my doctor has me on 500 mgs of metformin 3 times a day to help with weight loss. So I have to ask ....Does anyone think this will actually work for me? I am a terrible dieter and so far this seems to be simple enough..however the scale is a bit discouraging to me so far :(

Don't look at this as a diet, look at as a lifestyle change.
  • I really do think you should consider at least trying to count calories. It really works and is a lot easier than it sounds - especially with a fantastic tool like MyFitnessPal. Also don't just go by the number on the scales as this can be misleading. Take loads of photos and measurements for future reference! I wish I had. Best of luck regardless though :)

Counting calories is great when first starting out. It makes you aware of what you are eating and how much exercise you have to do to make up for over eating. I am naturally lazy and I want to do the bare minimum of cardio possible and counting calories basically tells you what to eat to be able to still lose weight.
  • I Have been using the tool the last few days and I am either way over or way under I am sure a groove is what I need to find to make it more of a "habit" than a chore .. :-/ I just thought staying at under like 20 carbs a day I would definitely
    Lose the weight

Counting calories can be a difficult adjustment at first...but you learn as you go. And it's really not any harder than low-carb, and I'm pretty sure it's better for you in the long run, especially since it's sustainable. You're not giving up any type of food group or particular food, so it's easier not to go crazy from deprivation and put all the weight back on once you've hit your goal weight.

Two years ago I did the Dukan Diet which is just a fancy low-carb plan and lost close to 40 lbs in less than 3 months. I can tell you that from day 1 of that diet I looked forward to the day when I could eat carbs with no limit. I ended up losing my will and gained everything back plus an extra 10 lbs! I started MFP almost three weeks ago and instead of looking forward to when I can eat certain foods again, I eat whatever I want in smaller portions and look forward to WEARING whatever I want in the future. My experience with food restriction diets have been that I just obsess and obsess until I finally give up and give in. I can't tell you one time in the last 3 weeks I have desired something I could not have. If I want it, I log it and see how I will have to plan the rest of my day if I eat that item. It's amazing how often you will find yourself passing up the piece of pie to eat a piece of fruit when you see what it will cost you in calories! You have to find what works best for you but I would definitely give the calorie counting a shot!
