Does diary HELP or HINDER weight loss?

There has been a lot of controversy about dairy with some sources claiming that it helps weight loss, e.g. skim milk helps burning fat and building muscle. However, other sources say to stay away from dairy to lose weight, e.g. have only 2-3 servings a week.

Which one do you think is true and what has worked best for you??

I'm currently unsure, because I'm planning my food plan, and I only have 1200 calories to go with (this will probably last a month or two only).

Currently I'm thinking about 400 calories cooked vegetabes/leafy greens and salad, 500 calories protein, e.g. egg, tuna, salmon etc, 200 calories of fruit, and 100 calories of dairy??

Or should I have 100 calories of an extra egg??

Does protein or dairy work better for you??

AFter weight training, is it better to eat an egg or 200mls of skim milk??

Thanks!

Eating at maintenance or a calorie surplus is what will hinder weight loss. Dairy does not. No food will unless eaten in excess. Unless you are allergic or intolerant, dairy is fine.

If you like milk, have milk.

If you burn more calories than you consume, you will lose weight. There is no food you can eat that will magically defy math.

It does neither. Weight loss is calories in vs. calories out. I have dairy daily because I love cheese and milk, but I'm still losing weight. Just make it work in your calorie budget. But beware, you don't have to drop down to 1200 automatically to lose weight. I'm 5'2 and netting 1400 a day and still losing weight. And if you're eating that little you need to eat back your exercise calories.

I personally would rather have 100 calories of milk vs eggs, but that decision is up to you.

After weight training you need protein with a bit of carbs to help rebuild your muscles. Most go with a protein drink, but if that's not available chocolate milk also helps too.

You can save calories by using almond milk (30 calories a cup versus 90 calories for milk). Almond milk is often too sweet for me, so I used the unsweetened Silk brand to mix with protein powder. It makes a good low cal shake. Silk almond milk is a better brand than Diamond because it doesn't have carrageenan, which causes digestive problems for some people.

I know about the CLA studies, and there is a tiny benefit seen in enough studies. I don't bother with tiny benefits, but it's nice because I really like dairy :)

I don't know the theories of why it could hinder weight loss. If so, I'm guessing that's just a tiny trend seen, too, lol. I don't know that for sure, but that's the way these things usually go ;)

Dairy aids greatly in my weight loss because I'm lactose intolerant so spending the whole day crapping my brains out tends to really keep the pounds off.

I find dairy to be delicious and nutritious. I prefer the 2% fat versions over skim since fat isn't the enemy. Lately, I haven't been losing weight but it's because I've been eating too much. Dairy is just another thing to use your calories on.
  • I keep a diary of my daily dairy.

    thanks for that

were you trying to make it a little bit of an alliteration one-liner or something.

    well done
    well guess what
I don't keep a diary of my daily dairy

    okay whatever

    I'm tired. Need to workout.
  • No, you could have your days worth of calories in dairy and you will lose weight.
  • No, you could have your days worth of calories in dairy and you will still lose weight.
Not that that's a good idea..
