First Glimpse of Your Goal?

I've been tracking for almost three weeks now, and I haven't been totally strict (or begun exercising, tut tut) I was surprised today to discover I could fit into a dress two sizes smaller. I haven't been a UK size 20 (US 16) for over a year and at my heaviest - ie: when I began this programme three weeks ago - I was up to a UK size 24 (US 20)

It's amazing how this has cheered me on and made me feel motivated to make more effort! Starting tomorrow I'm beginning a schedule of exercising for about forty minutes three times a week, focusing on building core strength initially and then later also adding in a regular session of aerobic walking.

What was your first glimpse of success when working on losing weight and getting healthy?
How did it make you feel?
How did it motivate you?
What did you do to reward yourself?

I saw dramatic improvements in my blood work in my first 12 weeks of good livin' and had some meds removed.

Yes, that must be great! I've got a fasting blood test scheduled for the end of January. I'm hoping that my cholesterol levels will be better then than they were a few weeks ago before I started tracking and cutting out the hard fats like cheese and butter!

Well, I'm pretty sure I was developing some type of diabetes before I started eating better and working out. I felt very tired all day long. And then one day it just stopped and I had a lot of energy and just didn't felt like ****. Could claim the stairs without feeling like I just did 100 jumping jacks, stopped getting cold every couple of weeks... all that kind of little things. That came first before I even lost any noticeable amount of weight. Obviously I felt great and yes, it motivated me. Kept doing what I was doing cos I didn't wanted to feel crappy again. Now it's part of my day, working out, and I don't know how that happened by I actually enjoy the process now.
  • I've always had an insane appetite, I'm not into sweets or anything like that, but when I'd eat I ate. I never thought cutting calories would work for me because of my appetite.

Well, I reached a point where I was going to have to go up a size in jeans and shirts, I was looking on the internet for them, because you can't find my sizes in stores, and I got really depressed and told myself I have to do something, I can't just keep buying bigger clothes.

After just a few days of being on the diet, I noticed I wasn't getting hungry, I sometimes would even forget to eat. Since being on the diet I sometimes eat just to make sure I'm over the 1,200 calorie threshold.

For me, that was what told me I could do this. I don't know the reason why, but cutting calories has actually made me less hungry. I'm now 40lbs down, those jeans I couldn't fit in when I started, don't fit now because their too big.

I'm happy with the wieght loss, and it's actually seemed pretty easy for me. What now get's me depressed is that I waited so long. If I would of started this diet 4 years ago instead of today, I'd have 100 lbs to lose instead of 200. Oh well, I'm on the diet and heading in the right direction, that's really all that matters.

I hadn't quite reached the point where my weight was impinging on my day to day health and wellbeing - barring making it harder to run for a bus or similar! But after having a blood test and getting a result with very high cholesterol it was clear that it *would* start impinging on my health - potentially my heart health - in the future, and at my age it was a case of catching it now before it became a serious problem.

Now I don't just want to avoid health problems I want to feel fit and strong too. I look forward to getting where you are now, with a health promoting lifestyle that you actively enjoy as an habitual part of your daily life.

Wow, it's amazing that your appetite diminished like that! I hear they say that the stomach actually shrinks if you put less into it - I'm still waiting for that to happen, ha! But then like you, I can eat a big plate of food (and go back for seconds)

I'm finding 1200 kcal manageable so far - though as I've got over 100lbs to lose I'm not being terribly strict about it right now. What I've found is it's important for me that I get a good solid tasty meal in once a day at least so I don't feel deprived and depressed at boring salad all the time. So I put most of my calories into a big tasty dinner - usually including brown rice, wholemeal pasta or baked potato as I'm a real carb lover - which keeps me happy.
