I have been trying to lose weight as far as i can remember and my weight just keeps going up over the years. What happens is i will start a diet for a couple of weeks see no results and give up. I even hired a trainer for a year and i was getting bigger. Very frustrated, This time i have decided to count my calories and not follow anybodies plan. Has this worked for anyone ? i really do not want to incorporate anything else right now because i don't want to become overwhelmed

It has worked for me. I had, for instance, fried chicken tonight. I also had a glass of chocolate milk. Was I over...yes, slightly. Am I exercising it off...not tonight. I'm tired. But I find that logging makes me think AS I'm making the choice. I end up eating less of the higher calorie stuff or...choosing a healthier breakfast and lunch and scheduling an exercise time b/c I know I'm eating out with friends. When I joined in August, I told it 1lb a week, sedentary lifestyle work out 1 day a week. That was in August and I have been gradually getting more and more healthy one very slow step at a time. Don't think of this is a diet or you will fail. This is a lifestyle change. Good luck!
  • I'm not exactly sure what you went about in terms of dieting and working out, but cardio is key if you want to lose weight. I recommend going on the treadmill for at least 30 mins at a pace at or above 6 mph. Cardio sucks, but after you finish running those miles I guarantee you'll feel really good :)

Exercise and reducing calories is the only thing that does work. I started out June 25th just walking 4.5 miles per day with my dog willow. i weighted almost 200 lbs (probably did weigh 200 lbs, but didn't weigh myself that day). In August, I joined this site - I had already reduced my weight by about 20 lbs. I have since reduced my weight by another 26 lbs - I have a total weight reduction of 46 lbs in 4 months and 3 days (10/29/10). I am 56 years old, arthritis in both knees, problems with my lower and middle back. I just keep exercising and eating healthier. I don't eat candy at all, I avoid wine, beef, and breads (they mess with my system), and i walk, use the stationary bike, exercise videos, and work on my house (remodeling my kitchen pretty much by myself). All of the gimmicks, teas, herbal stuff, etc. simply don't work for me - but reducing calorie intake and exercising does. You get to choose how much you want to lose, how fast, and in what way. You will only fail if you give up.

    Blessings on your journey.

Go to the Home page on the message board and read the many successful loss stories there. Add tons of friends for suport and when you have a bad day don't beat yourself up.

    Many questions on here:

    Do I eat my calories?

YES, at least have of them

DO NOT GO UNDER A 1000 CALORIES A DAY

What type of HRM (heart rate monitor) is good?

I personally have the PT7 (Polar) most people like the Polar company whether it be the PT7 or the P6. If you do buy a HRM GET THE CHEST STRAP. The 2 I have mentioned both have chest strap and are made to an XXL down to a XS.

    I am craving.........should I eat it?

Yes alway eat what you want but NEVER eat it all. You want a choc. bar have a little not giving in can make you binge later.

MOST OF ALL AND SUPER IMPORTANT. DRINK YOUR 8 GLASSES OF WATER A DAY.

I will add you as my friend too. Read the message board tons of information on here.

Oh ya try to get some sort of exercise in. Even if it is just walking. Make sure you add lots of friends they help out tons.

That's EXACTLY how I started. Eliminating small things (like fast food) and monitoring what I put in my face. To be real the weight came off slowly but it was ok because I wasn't on a "diet" I was just paying attention to what I ate. As I started to see more results I started doing little stuff like parking farther away when I went to the store, taking an extra lap with the shopping cart when I was done. And eventually added more and more... it's been a long process but it's been REALLY worth it. The biggest thing for me was not going gung-ho (i.e. dieting and hitting the gym like a maniac) because I didn't burn out. I decided that I was worth eating better and moving more...

Good luck starting your journey... you're worth it.

I once had amazing results (40 lbs in 3 months, which lasted years, between pregnancies) from watching what I eat and working out twice a week (martial arts). I was also working a lot and bringing up a child on my own, so I kept myself very occupied (no mindless eating and very little TV time). So, yes, it can be done!! You don't have to do martial arts, but it's fun...but you would need to do some physical activity to help burn off the unwanted weight.

I'm trying the trainer route this time around, as I'm not longer in the city where I trained in martial arts (I miss that school sooooo much) and have yet to find a place comparable to it...I am enjoying myself and staying motivated, but the means is very new to me this time around.

Counting calories is a GREAT way to better health. Had I equipped myself with the knowledge about my former favorite fast foods, I would be a lot healthier, but now that I'm logging everything, it's much easier to say no. :o)

    Stay encouraged!

It seems to be working for lots of people. I don't eat "clean" 100% of the time, I eat out occasionally, I eat processed foods occasionally, and I even have junk food (incl. chocolate) occasionally. I watch my calories and stay between 1200 and 1400 per day. I don't feel deprived, I don't get hungry (quite the opposite in fact) and my life doesn't revolve around a "diet". I haven't made my guy change his diet in any way either. There are still chips, cookies and candy in the house at all times. I just try to make smarter, more nutritional choices for me. My diary is public, feel free to look. I have to learn to live in the world around me, it won't change so *I* have to. I still have 100+ to go, and I know it isn't going to happen any time soon, but I have made a good start.

If I can do it, so can you! People on MFP are friendly and more than willing to answer questions and give suggestions. Good Luck!

Thanks so much to all of you. I thought maybe one person would respond, i did not expect all of you. I was reading the post for newbie's Living with Obesity at 700 calorie a day. They were talking to me. I have learned that I don't eat the recommended amount of calories. I have been giving up before my slow metabolism adjusts its self. , I don't track my food and I eat out to much. I real want to start losing this weight and i think with all of you on this site and all the information i have learned i will be on my way.

    Thanks
