Ok so i just read another topic about hair loss, does anybody know if you add biotin & a mv would it help hair loss? or should i add an iron pill instead?

I've lost 24lbs so far so i know thats a possiblity but my hair even as heavy as i used to be has always be a pride for me.

I WILL die:brokenheart: if my hair thins out.

I'm a bit paniky thinking my diet has something to do with it.

Adding Jack Daniels and Cuban Cigars doesn't seem to help.

    You're too funny!

Making sure you get plenty of protein will help prevent hair loss. The protein on here is set too low for my taste.

You might want to have a blood test done. You could have a hormonal imbalance. Are you on birth control pills? If so, you may need to have your pill changed. That happened to me and I've been on new pills for 4 months and it seems to be helping I think.

Relax, that's the main one....find something that centers your Chi (sounds hippy i'm sorry lol) find someone that does reiki, or get a massage, meditate for half an hour, to yoga or thai chi...

Blood test would be good ... also BC pills may be causing it. Make sure you are getting enough protein and I have read from multiple sources (and I even think Dr. Oz has said this) prenatal vitamins help too.

I noticed a lot of my hair falling out and a friend of mine suggested Biotin. I have been taking it for about a month and I haven't noticed as much hair in the shower or on my comb. Gillian is right- stress can cause more hair loss than usual. What I believe is also helping is that I am currently going to school to be a massage therapist and getting about one massage a week in class and I am certified in reiki. So relax!!!!

Agreed! Stress is a MAJOR factor!!! It sounds crazy...but it really is. Last year I was under major stress with my job and my hair was falling out left and right. Now I have a new stress-free job a year later and my health is better, diet is better and hair is longer and healthier.

If your diet is good...then your hair would not be falling out because of IT. Vitamin E is a good vitamin to take if you feel the need. They also make a Hair, Skin and Nails vitamin or you could just take Pre-Natal Vitamins.

This happened to me and the only thing I can think is that its from the drastic change in diet! mind has stopped falling out by the handful (it was really bad for me in the shower) and I do see new growth in the front. No one else could tell I was losing my hair bt when I would put it in a ponytail it was much thinner. BTW I have been on this new eating diet since Jan 2010, the summer was when the hair loss for me was the greatest and it has now gotten better, so I think there is hope
  • You may need to see your dr about it. Hypothyroid and high dose antibiotics cause my hair to fall out. Stress is a big issue and working out when your body isn't used to it can cause it. Before you add iron supplements to your diet, go to the dr and GNC. If your body doen't need iron and you add it you can become very sick. At GNC they sell a supplement for hair, nails and skin. There are a few options to choose from and the employees there are generally knowlegable about the products. Also as someone else said you may need more protien, thats what your hair is made of. If your working out hard and 'breaking down' your muscles then the protien in you diet is probably going to repair/rebuild your muscles and your hair may not be getting as much as it needs. I personally like BSN protien vanilla flavor, its smoother and doesn't have that 'protien' after taste.. however it is a little more expensive than other brands and higher in cals than some. Hope I helped, good luck :)

I took a peak at your food diary, and if it is accurate, on many days you are severely undereating, which could definitely lead to hair loss.

Please speak to your doctor about the hair and the diet.:flowerforyou:

I do believe that Testosterone are primary hormones in sex drive and hair growth. I just prefer not to waste mine on hair growth.

Only thing about that is that I'm usually eating my alloted 1200 cals but my workouts usually burn 400+ should i be 'eating' litteraly (sp?) back?

A friend had a Thyroid test done because of her hair loss. If it's more than average, I suggest going to your doctor.

Yes you should eat 'most' of your calories back. Your body needs those cals to recover, and one of the best times to have protien is right after a workout when your body is craving it. :flowerforyou:

Yes, eat your workout calories! Your goal already projects a deficit for weight loss, and that is why the goal increases when you exercise. I also agree with previous comments about protein. MFP's default setting are too low in my opinion. Try decreasing carbs a little and adding protein. If that combined with eating your exercise calories does not stop the hair loss, definitely consult your doctor...

what would yall suggest to be a good protein choice?
I don't eat eggs at all (blech):noway: i don't eat much meat, not a vegetarian but i'm about as close as you can get without being one, I love soy milk almonds (like almond milk?) and such would that help?

I still suggest a protien shake. I really like BSN, you can find it at most health stores (ie. GNC). To me BSN has the best flavor and doen't have the gritty-ness (i know not a word) or the 'protien' after taste. My fave flavor is Vanilla cause you can mix it with so much. One scoop with some milk (soy works fine too, i use it) and fruit in the blender= yummy. 2 scoops with water still has a nice consistency and isn't like flavored water as many other brands I've tried are. I will also add, BSN is a lil more expensive than some of the other options.

Another cause of hair thinning for us women is menopause. Then, some drugs will cause it too. Check your prescriptions.

I just had a look at your diary and there are a lot of days where you are extremely far under the 1200 minimum. Plus its hard to tell as you have quick calories listed instead of the items, but it could be you also aren't getting enough vitamins and minerals from your food choices.

I would recommend that you try keeping your minimum at 1200 calories - because that's what your body needs to function. Most likely I would think you would see a significant improvement if you do that. And don't worry, you will still take weight off because MFP builds a deficit into your count.

Also sometimes hair loss can be caused by other things, so if it doesn't improve soon, I think it would be a good idea to see a doctor and be sure what's going on.

    Best wishes.

Yes it would help, Siggi's icelandic yogurt, greek yogurt, cheeses, regular nuts, legumes (beans) soy protein shakes I use genisoy and I started losing hair in the past and it was due to low protein this time my protein levels are higher because I'm aware. so no hair loss.
  • Along with protein, be sure to get enough fat in your diet, preferably fats like olive oil, flaxseed, avocado, walnuts, etc. Most of us tend to cut way back on fat when we cut calories but your body does need fat.

I get Whey (EAS brand) and Casein (Optimum Nutrition brand) protein powders separately. After a workout I have a whey protein shake because our bodies absorb protein more readily right after a workout and whey is highly absorbable. I have a Casein shake every evening before bed because it is slowly absorbed over eight hours and feeds my muscles at night to preserve them and promote growth.

The Optimum Nutrition Casein products are really delicious by the way...

I had recently lost around 20lbs and my hair started shedding like crazy. I went to see my dermatologist and she told me about this all natural/drug free hair supplement. Its called Viviscal. I guess the main ingredient is a marine complex and she also told me that there are clinical studies done on the supplement that. I have been taking it for 3 months and the shedding has drastically stopped. I plan on continuing to take it, I like its all natural as well.
