Headache

Last Thursday (Thanksgiving) I got drunk and had a hangover the next two days. By Sunday I pretty much felt better, but I still had a slight headache. I've been chugging water for days, taking sudafed in case its a sinus headache, and advil. I've tried caffeine. I still have a headache. Today it is pounding. Anyone have any suggestions (other than see a Doctor)?

    I've been on vacation all week so I have napped a few times. The temperature dropped drastically and I'm wondering if I'm sensitive to the difference in air pressure.

    You expect us to diagnose your problem through a few sentences on the internet. Go see a doctor.

    Are you in your mid-thirties by any chance??

    Do some research and talk to your doctor about migraines: common in women in their mid - thirties, and I was one of them. Barometric Pressure and some foods are triggers. You can start a headache journal to help you find relief. Include all food and drinks daily (easy with MFP). Include your menstrual cycle and the barometric pressure. These things are all important in solving this puzzle. Sometimes stress plays a role, as well.

    You could try an antihistimine in case it's allergies or swollen sinus passages. If you've just been taking a decongestant, I mean :) Check what's in your Sudafed. Sometimes that really helps.

    I have suffered migraines for the last 20yrs. I get less than a handful. Usually I lose my vision with them.

    Another poster said "go to the doctor". I can't get in until Monday. I was hoping someone could give me another home remedy to try.I'm going to take an antihistimine now. Wish me luck.

    As someone who had headaches daily for over a year and wrote off going to the doctor, I understand your disdain for those saying, "Go to the doctor." However, ultimately you should. When I finally went after many tests and a brain MRI I found that I had a rare brain condition and needed to have brain surgery earlier this year to alleviate the symptoms.

    So...since you are looking for quick fixes until then I can suggest the following:

    1. Ice pack on your forehead or back of your head in a dark, quiet room.
    2. Heating pad (preferably microwaveable in case you fall asleep) in a dark, quiet room.
    3. Lavender and/or peppermint oil on your temples.

    an anti-imflammatory and caffeine are usually a fix for me if nothing else works.

    Chocolate and exercise.

    I've found with regular exercise, my migraines have lessened in both frequency, length of time they last, and pain.

    When I do find one coming on (and this depends how fast/bad it comes on or how long I wait it out because I can be dumb:P), chocolate is a great first defense. It has natural sedatives and caffeine. If it continues, then I'll hit the tylenol. If it gets really bad - excedrine (regular extra strength) or if really really bad - Excedrine Migraine.

    Yeah. I have a system :laugh:

    I ended up in the ER after not being able to even drink water, Thought I would die after the second day of throwing up even H2O,

    Antihistimines, I remember trying those.

    Sometimes they work. Other times not so much. Depends on the headache. Ugh. SO glad to be past that after 30 years. Just. Ugh.

    Check your blood pressure even if to rule it out. You shouldn't Have a hang over this long.

    Some people told me coffee or soda. That made it worse for me. But even within my family, our treatments can differ. two of my aunts and my mom both have migraine issues (it's hereditary). Each of them have some different triggers and treatments are pretty different.

    Examples: One aunt can take a variety of pill type medications, the other aunt and my mom had to go with injections
    Two of them do the chocolate route, the other can't because it sets them off.
    My aunts and mom love peanuts (and nuts in general), those set my migraines off.

    It's funny when I think about it. :laugh:

    Go for a nice long walk... a slow leisure relaxed one... and if that don't work EXCEDRIN :)

    stress can be a trigger too.
    You should really try and just stick to water only, no caffeine if you can, those trigger headaches too.
    to determine how much water you should drink a day divide your body weight in 1/2 and those are the ounces - at the very least.
    rest and what you are doing, if you still feel crummy monday then get an appt.

    Sounds like a migraine. (especially since you have migraine history) Ice pack, moderate exercise, magnesium, vitamin B2...... that's all I've got that may work quickly and without a doctor.

  • I feel your pain. I have a headache right now as I type this. I ended up in the hospital after having a constant migraine headache for over 7 weeks last year. They tried everything to get the headache to go away. The pain was so bad that even the highest pain medication they could give me didn't work. I was absolutely miserable by head felt like it was literally about to explode. When I left the hospital after four days the headache was less severe but still there. Fast forward one year.

    I can't have Red Wine, Artificial Sweetners or lemonaide. They cause bad headaches, lemonaide for some reason its almost instant.

    Believe me when I say I have tried every type of headache medicine out there. None seem to work for me. I have to take way more than the recommended dose to even touch a headache and I have to take it immediately when the symptoms start or I'm screwed.

    Start a journal to narrow it down to what foods/things trigger them. It will be different for you then anyone else that tells you their triggers.

    My go-to hangover remedy was chocolate milk over ice. I made my way through college with chocolate milk over ice. But I digress.

    I'm glad you have a Dr's appointment. In the mean time, you could try any of the over-the-counter migraine tabs. They're generally either tylenol or aspirin with some caffeine. The caffeine amps up the effect of the pain reliever. It's become my go-to otc pain reliever now for anything from minor headaches to arthritic pain. I just use the Walmart brand that's both acetaminophen (Tylenol) and aspirin, and the caffeine.

    If you're sensitive to caffeine just be aware - it does have about 65 mgs of caffeine per dosage. That's just a tad less than a 20oz bottle of Diet Coke.

    If you are prone to headaches, you can get a headache when the Advil etc. wears off in your system. It's called a rebound headache. Google "rebound headache" and Advil or other headache meds for more info.

    If the headache persists you should go to the doctor.

    You need to go see your doctor because hangovers don't last this long and you are in enough pain to where over the counter and home remedies are not working.

    Could be any number of things. Is this headache constant or does it come and go, or get worse as the day wears on? Your eyesight may have changed suddenly, you wear glasses. How is your vision, can you see well out of each eye alone with your glasses on?
