Holy Diabetes! I don't Need to Lose Weight! I need LIPO

Options
Hello,

Ive come to the conclusion today that I, a 150lb 5'9" 32-year-old female with Type 1 diabetes for over 20 years DOES NOT need to lose weight!!!! What is need is liposuction for my lipohypertrophy - a medical condition caused by insulin injections causing abnormal fat deposits that do not ever go away with any diet or exercise - and in most cases, not even time awaited. I've avoid my abdomin injections for 3 years and there has been no change. This deformity is still the same and it protrudes over any pair of pants i own no matter what weight i am. I can remember when i was 12-year-old there was a bubble around my belly button. It has bothered me for so long and i had no idea what it was from. I thought i was just blessed with another thing wrong with me. So if i can manage to get lipo for this I am going to be effing ecstatic! I will definately have that normal looking body I always wanting and I will continue lifting heavy and finally be able to see what lifting can do for my abdomen. Any diabetics have lipohypertrophy? do anyting about it or just live with it? Thanks!

Lipohypertrophy should go away a few months after you stop injecting the same place.

    But sure. Get lipo.
Except you said you and your husband struggle financially.
But lipo is worth it. Get another credit card or something.

    Wikipedia says...

"Lipohypertrophy usually will gradually disappear over [a period of] months if injections in the area are avoided."

Hello!!!! Been avoiding the injection site for 3 years! If you read a little deeper into the problem, some say it never goes away. My endocrinologist even said to me it will never go away and that was a couple weeks ago he told me.

I believe that this procedure should be covered by health care as it's for a medical need, not aesthetics. I'm unable to use that place to take needles anymore because insulin absorbtion doesn't happen with the damage there. Yes there's other spots for injections but those will get ruined some day too. My lipohypertrophy needs to be fixed or I won't be able to treat my disease and i will die.

If you think Canadian medicare will cover that, good luck. They will laugh you right out of the office - it's cosmetic.

PS - why aren't you on a pump if you're having trouble with injection sites?!?

    #1 Pumps cost $6000+
    #2 Pumps cause lipohypertrophy too.

Go for it if it will make you feel better but just remember it will probably happen again if you're that prone to it. I've been on the pump for 8 years and it's way better but 90% of the time I use my hips and butt for that reason. I know some people that even put their site in their boobs.....owww.
You can finance a pump for about $130/month or there's even companies that sell demo models for $900-$1,500 if you can afford that outlay. I can not say enough positive things about pumping........it literally changed my life and allowed me to have kids.
    Good luck with your decision!!

Lipo is plastic surgery. Therefore it IS NOT COVERED BY INSURANCE. You will never get a insurance company to cover the costs of lipo. lipohypertrophy is a result of insulin injections which you need for your diabetes. It is not an actual medical condition. The point is, you don't NEED lipo because of a life threatening medical condition. You WANT it because you are unhappy with your body and the fat deposits caused by the insulin injections.

I've been a Type One Diabetic since I was 12 and have been using the insulin pump since I was 16, I'm 29 now. I have the same exact situation with my stomach as you and so I stopped placing my pump sights in the middle of my stomach for over a year now, but the bubble above my belly button is still there. I've spoken to my husband about liposuction as well but he doesn't think the area looks so bad, but it bothers me SO MUCH!!

every one has something that really bothers them about themselves. However, unless it is a mole on your face, other people hardly ever notice them.

Why don't you put the lipo on your 'nice to have' list (that is if it isn't covered by insurance)? In a couple of years your financial situation might look differently or you could put some money away each month for it?

From personal experience with specialists...Lipohypertrophy will go away for many people, but for some it will never go away as the fat tissue in the affected areas becomes "dead". No amount of waiting, dieting, etc., will reverse it. Found this out after losing a lot of weight and then waiting years for it to go away. Finally, after seeking more advice from docs in the know, the fat cells just "die" (not really, but she said it is the best description) and as she explained, "...it becomes like a benign tumor". :(

At this point, usually with Type 1 diabetics who have had this build for many many years, Lipo is the the only way to turn.
