I WAS 109 as a dancer. Then I found out I had FAI and I had to get hip surgery. In the two months I've been down so far I've gained around 10 pounds!!! It's frustrating me to tears. I can't do anything I love (Dancing and horse riding/training) And now I'm starting to feel down on myself, now that I've gained it. I can't really exercise or anything right now, and I was hoping someone would have an idea to healthily lose weight while I can't exercise.
Thanks.
Thanks.

in order to lose weight all that is needed is a calorie deficit, so enter all your numbers into mfp (or an online calculator) and start logging everything that passes your lips.
Just a word of advanced warning even if you chose the option of 2lbs loss a week it won't work, because you are already pretty light and you won't be able to support that big a deficit healthily.0 -

My roughly 116 pounds of weight loss has been achieved with pretty much no exercise.0 -
I've been on MFP for 2 weeks and I've lost about 2kg already without exercising. MFP has put me at 1200 calories a day and I find it quite manageable because I snack a lot on carrots. It IS possible to lose weight without exercising0

You just need to get your calories dialed in. You won't be able to eat nearly as much when lying in bed as you could when dancing, which sucks. To help adjust try gradually decreasing calories by 100 or so every couple of days until you're at the right level. That should help cushion the initial hunger.
Don't cut too low though, your body needs to be healing.0 -
I have a HLT that they won't approve surgery for because they are *kitten*. I'm too young, its not bad enough, but what they really mean is we're cheap insurance and we don't wanna. Anywho, do months I was in pain and depressed and gained over 40 pounds. Before the injury and the pain I was on my way to health and had lost over 20 pounds. When I first started MFP I was strictly monitoring caloric intake. I was only doing my PT which burns a little but not a hole hell of a lot. I lost several pounds this way.
Gradually the PT started to strengthen the muscles around my hip (as there is not cure and it won't heal without surgery as I am sure you understand with you condition.) I began to be able to walk farther and longer. I was feeling happier and healthier just from walking so I did that for several months and more weight fell off. Then I purchased the PT recommended recumbent bike which actually is an elliptical too. It broke down and took two months to repair again so it was strictly walking and diet bug now it's up again and I do that and I also do low impact activities on my new to me Wii.
Bottom line is there is hope, don't give up. You are strong and I commend you for making the decision to do something now and not after you've gained as much as I did. Hip injuries are the worst and its worse still because they never want to operate because were ok young and then we end up needing hip replacements later in life. Keep your head up, I hope you feel Meyer soon, and know it does get better. FAI is not the same as as HLT so I won't try to offer exercises because its to easy to make there's kinds of injuries worse.
Good luck0 -

This. I lost my weight with no exercise.0 -
Could you swim or do water aerobics?0

Weightloss is 75% diet... so I'm guessing you're not eating a great diet if you've gained 10lbs in such a short time. Some days... I don't have much of a deficit.... or at all... but i'm not eating more than I burn... so I'm staying the same. In order to gain weight you have to be eating MORE than you're burning. I'm 5'2, 175lbs and I burn about 2000cals on a normal day (no exercise). It takes a lot for me to get up to 2000cals... so even if I didn't try I would be at a small deficit. Find out how much (realistically - I love my Fitbit) you're burning... don't go over. Worst case you'll stay the same.0

My exercise has been pretty minimal—and nonexistent for the last month—and I'm just shy of 50 pounds lost. It is possible. However, like someone else mentioned, go for maybe half a pound a week since you're already so small and have so little to lose. It'll help keep you from getting bigger until you're recovered and can do those fantastic activities you love so much0

How tall are you? You're wanting to get back down to 106 lbs?0

I'm in physical therapy hoping to avoid this same surgery. It's frustrating that there's not much activity that I can do, especially run. (Never thought I'd miss running, but there you have it.) I'm trying so hard to maintain a low cal diet, but it's hard, especially during the holidays (ALL the cookies!). Keep your chin up, your eye on the prize, and be concious of what you eat.
Sometimes having a big glass of water before you eat a meal helps. Planning helps. Coming on here helps. Friends help. Distractions help. You CAN do this!0 -
Set your goal to lose 0.5lbs week and eat the amount of cals MFP tells you to.0

Well its obvious. If you stay here long enough youll see many threads which discuss calories in and calories out.
With the surgery and your activity level being a lot lower than you are used to, your calories out (burned) are probably a lot less (A reason for the gain). Adjust your caloric intake (eat less) to accommodate for the more sedentary activity while you are healing up.
You might want to figure out what your intake is just for maintenance and then resume your normal eating as soon as you are able to be active and exercise again.0 -

Good job taking the first step in coming to MFP for ideas & support! Monitoring calorie intake will definitely help, all good suggestions above. I don't know much about your condition, but is it possible to do upper-body exercise? (Upper body weight lifting, cardio punching routines?) It might not be anywhere near as active as you're used to, but every little bit can help. Good luck!0

I lost most of my weight because of diet, not exercise. You need to set your goal to .5 pound a week (you're pretty small and it might take a while!) and follow your calorie allowances. The hardest thing is not eating the same way you did when you were active. Smaller portions, smaller calorie allowance (probably somewhere in the 1200 - 1400 range would be my guess?)
Also, look into swimming or other non-impact sports. There is no reason you can't do ANY exercise. You could do strength training for the parts that aren't injured or ask your physical therapist for some supplemental exercises beyond building up your hip.0 -

Guess I missed it :blushing:
Anyway, OP, that will put you in the underweight category of BMI. BMI's not perfect but it's usually a decent enough starting place.
You're at a healthy weight now, why not just maintain for the time being?0 -
You just need to eat at a caloric deficit. Not a huge one. 500 calories less than you burn every day will lose you a pound a week. I was injured when I started and lost my first 50 lbs with no exercise.0

It's against MFP guidelines to advocate for VLCDs, except as prescribed by a doctor. Just throwing that out there.0
