Gained 3 Pounds in 3 Days! WHY?

I am obese and have been eating around 1200-1500 calories a day. Yesterday I began riding my bike. I admit I don't drink a lot of water and have been drinking unsweet tea with sweet and low in it. I have been on a diet since the first of October and have consistently been losing 2 pounds per week. I weighed Sunday and had dropped 2 pounds. This morning, Tuesday, I weighed and have gained 3 pounds. What is going on? Is this normal? I can't believe this happened cause I added exercise to my day. Trying to keep my head up.

Its completely normal to retain water when you start a new exercise routine or up the intensity of your exercise routine. You have not gained fat, its just water retention while your body repairs the muscles you used yesterday. Drink plenty of water and you'll notice it drops away in a couple of days.

If you think fluctuations are going to stress you out, I advise not weighing more than once a week.
I weigh in every day but I recognise my trend and my fluctuations - these past 5 days my highest weight and lowest weight have been 5lbs apart!!! Its completely normal.
  • Sorry to but in:
During these weight fluctuations, what would you say is one's true weight?
    The higher or lower number?

Fluctuations are completely normal and you'll see it happen many, many times. You just need to expect it and push through.

I'm up 6.2lbs since Saturday.

I don't know - some people use an average of 7days.

I personally record the lowest number but I don't think it matters, as long as my trend goes down and my clothes fit better that's all I really care about.

You'll never know your 'true weight'. There are too many variables.
  • Thanks for the responses.....I do feel a little better. Going for my bike ride, will drink more water, use less salt, and keep my head up today.
