This is a different kind of success story...
I only started this 5 weeks ago, but one of the reasons I started was to set a better example for my kids. Well, today is a snow day for us and guess what I caught my six year old doing? Dancing around with my weights in front of the TV - now I truly know how ridiculous I must look to her when I am working out! :blushing:
I told her I was concerned she'd hurt herself with my weights but showed her how to do some bicep curls and promised I'd buy her a pair of 1lb-ers of her own. Oh, and when I went to the fridge for my snack I saw that my picky eater had eaten my pre-portioned grapefruit pieces.
For anyone with kids - they really do what we do, don't they? Anyway, it gave me a real boost to see that my efforts are already starting to pay off.

Yeah.... my wife started the plank challenge a few weeks ago so I've been doing it with her... it only took one evening for both our kids (3 & 5) to get down on the floor with us, grunting, groaning and heavy panting afterwards... lol They constantly ask "is this good exercise?" when doing a headstand or even kicking their legs in the air... congrats on your success story - aka Non-Scale-Victory!0

Every time you think about quitting...remember who's watching I also started this to be healthier for my son adnd a better role model0

I find my toddler is very supportive of my weight loss. Thats why she keeps nicking my food!0

Mine does the same. She is only 2, but when I turn the TV on in the evenings she grabs my old 1 lb walking weights or my 3 lb set. She will lift them up and say "ooohhhh" in a big drawn out grunt, like she's working so hard.
When I'm doing my cardio (DVD, that's why she likes when I turn the TV on) she will say "Go, go, go!"0 -

THIS!
More stories like this please!
My sister was a hospital dietitian, at one time. I nearly POPPED my buttons one day
when I heard her younger daughter, age 3, ask for cucumber spears as a snack.0 -
Awesome!!! We haven't been successful in expanding our family yet but haven't given up hope. I hope to be down to a healthy weight and in a proper habit so that I can be a better example for my kiddos someday-You can't preach what you don't do. I've actually thought about doing an ongoing letter to my future kids...about how my weight loss journey is like other struggles in life-i.e. you can't take the easy road all the time, work for what's important, etc. Great examples folks!0

How fun! I know the feeling. I can still remember the first time one of my kids wanted to exercise with Mommy. Two years in and they ask if I'm going to go for a run or workout (exercise DVD) when I put my exercise pants on. I actually got a second Yoga mat and some light weights because I almost always have an assistant helping me exercise. I think Jillian Michael's is my son's first crush...he gets so excited when I turn on one of her workout.
I hear you on the eating too. My kids have no problem eating fruits and veggies.
We are their best example. I struggled with weight for the majority of my life and if all my hard work and sweat helps teach them the skills they need to prevent themselves from having the same struggles I'm all for it.0 -
That's so cute, haha. My kids (2 & 3) do Pilates with me too, it's so funny! I made them some paper mache weights cause they also try to lift my actual ones which kind of terrifies me..0

My 9 yr old loves all raw veg. She actually said "Oooooh , can I have one?" When I brought home a bag of tomatoes on Friday. She will eat all of your pink grapefruit and can consume lentils and Brussels sprout by the kilo. Though she is a triathlete she is not thin-she is all curves thanks to our genetics. The only thing we restrict in her diet is how much cereals(grains) and potato she has access to . She has never known processed food at home so she is easy to shop with. I am always stunned when mothers say their children won't eat veggies...as if it is their kid's fault! I used to be silent now I just say "Well, that was your decision". I know that 80% of my own child's bad behavior can be traced right back to mistakes in my parenting.0

That's awesome!!! That's a great reminder for me to keep at my exercise and healthy eating as I want my children to grow up seeing me exercise and eat well and not just me telling them what's good for them.0

Very cute.
My daughter is my cheer leader. One cold and rainy day a few weeks ago I asked my daughter (who goes to the gym daycare while I workout) if she thought we should go to the gym first or eat dinner first. She said gym first. After leaving the gym I mentioned that I was starving. And what does my daughter say? "I am too. I was super hungry before we went to the gym. I just knew that if I said dinner first you wouldn't have gone to the gym tonight."0 -
Awesome NSV!!!!! My 9 year old just asked me on the weekend to check out her form when she was doing push-ups! My 7 year old son gets on the floor with me to do planks.
The best compliment I got and the one that keeps me going is what my children told me this summer - "Mom, you are such an active mom now....you want to do stuff with us, like biking, hiking and walking the trails around our house. Last year all you did was sit on the bench with your friends".
So here is to our kids and becoming better role models for them!!!! Keep going and you will be amazed at what you can accomplish, not only for yourself, but for the future of your kids.

Great success stories. Keep 'em coming.
My daughter is also a lot of my motivation. My desire is that she learns good habits at an early age and does not have to struggle as hard as I have with weight. I figure if I teach and demonstrate a healthy lifestyle, she will incorporate those principles into her life.
So, my daughter is 5, almost 6 years old. My wife works on the weekends (I word during the week). This means we get A LOT of daddy / daughter time on the weekends. We have made the YMCA our hang out place. They have a large kids area with a "McDonald's" style play-scape. She will play in there while I workout. Then we go swimming, they even have a new indoor pool that is open year round. She passes her swimming test to be able to go down the slide last weekend!
The Y is at one end of a walk/run/bike path that is at least 6 miles long. It passes playgrounds, a stream, small lake... along the way. When it's nice out we go on long walks. We are looking forward to the spring and biking the trail together.
She loves to eat good / healthy food (but will get in the rut of eating unhealthy if we don't give, and encourage healthy options). The girls live brussels sprouts, carrots, avocado, and could heat a salad twice a day.
Finally, my daughter was born after my wife and I had figured we would not be able to have kids. She is a blessing. She has motivated me to healthier, exercise regularly, make much better choices at the grocery store, and become a better cook... I hope to return the favor.0 -
Love this!!! Kids are great!! I have 2 daughters and they both "work-out" with me if they get up early for some reason. They each have their own weights...1 lb. Their favorite video is Jillian Michaels Kickbox Fastfix!!0

A few months back my 3 yr old (then 2 yrs) picked up a black piece of tape and put it around her chest (like a chest strap to a HRM) and said "look mommy. I go exercise. I get fweaty too." LOL
Kids are definitely our shadows0 -
My best NSVs also involve my kids. My 9 and 10 yr old are forever hugging me and seeing how I'm shrinking. My sweet son, 10, told my husband, "You know, Mom's an athlete now!" He also told me, " you could be a way better hockey player than Dad. You have so much dedication. You look great!"
Love kids!0 -
i remember taking my son and a friend (they were about 3-4 at the time) to BK for a treat lunch. this was in the days b/f they had fruit/veg & milk alternatives, so I had brought 2 sippy cups of milk and apple slices. I ordered their happy boxes and set them on the table with the milk and apples and to my delight they both ate the apple slices and drank half of their milk b/f even opening their boxes. :bigsmile:0

I have preteen twin girls who have always been on the higher end of the range for their age (built like their dad, very "solid"). Recently they've been telling me that they want to lose weight so there's been a lot of talk about getting "healthier", etc. They've always liked fruits and veggies, just eat too much of everything honestly. They hate sports, tried exercise videos and didn't like it, but have found out recently that they like it when I act like their personal trainer---telling them to do jumping jacks, lunges, planks, etc. So I've been getting ideas from workout videos online that are safe for their age.0

Way to be a good role model to your kids and also getting the 1lb weights so she can be a part of you. keep up the good work!0
-
Great idea for a thread. My 11 week old just laughed for the first time yesterday watching me do my ab exercises, and the 2.5 year old loves jumping up and down and shouting back a t Jillian Micheals0

When I go running my 3 year old asks to put on her sneakers and runs with me down our long driveway then waves me off at the end. I love it!0

my kindergarten kid did yoga with me from the television and during one of the poses fell asleep awhile back. we should do more yoga! almost forgot about that. can't beleive how relaxed and yet serious it was.0

Yeah. We can say all the words we want until we're blue in the face, but we lead by example:)0
-
Yes - our kids like to be like their mommies and daddies!! Mine love to go golfing, do yoga, go running, go biking...they like to stay busy because we stay busy.0
