Abdominal Binders/Girdles (for women)

I was at my doctors yesterday for my son's 1 year check up and asked him about what I could use to help making working out and daily life easier. I have a grade 2 abdominal apron and have lost 120lbs in a year. I have this skin/fat that hangs down which makes working out/running/jumping more difficult.
He suggested since I still have another 50-75lbs of weight to lose before being in my goal weight range that i look for some type of abdominal binder to wear on a daily basis. (We are already going to start discussing a panniculectomy once I am down another 50lbs)
I have started to do research and have previously worn Spanx in the past. I wanted to know what other people use who have lost a considerable amount of weight and now need some type of support daily or even while exercising.
I am looking for something that goes right under my bust and down to my thighs, I don't want something that stops at my hips because they will roll up. Something that is comfortable that I could wear on a daily basis and not feel like I am being sucked in and cannot breathe.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! :D Thanks!

Do you feel like it holds you in quite well and still comfortable? I really liked the spanx I had and so I like that they are the same company!

Just did a google search hehe! :D They are by spanx!
  • I'm in Canada so I don't know if you have Laura where you are but Laura Plus has a body shaper that goes from under the boobs to the knees. I personally don't wear it to work out -- I wear control panties from Addition Elle if I'm going to be hopping around. Congrats on the weight loss!

Just looked and no Laura around here :( I did find that addition plus will look! I defiantly would love to find something just for working out and just for daily wear. Those control panties look good for working out!

I had WLS in feb and have some of the same issues, and my tummy skin kind of "folds over" at my bellybutton area so I wear something called a Tummy Tank almost all the time unless I am just lounging at home. It is supportive, but not binding. JC Penney has onther one,. not sure of the brand that is a longer tank, it goes past my hips. I like that one too. And, like you I do not always like the short/legging spanx becasue of the rolling down issue

The Assets by Spanxs are great!!! You can buy them at Target stores & online. They are in the $20 price range. They work wonders! I have worn them under jeans & dresses!!! Love them!!!

I am in the UK and a cheaper version of spanx is Matalan, and their own body shaper underwear...I call them my `fat pants` they go from under the boobs down to your knicker line...I have not lost anywhere near the weight that you have lost, but I feel that I can not go out during the day without wearing them...they keep everything tucked in and in place.

Maybe of help to people reading your post in the UK?

But a big congratulations to you for your weight loss x

I will have to check out penny's website and see. I breastfeed so I don't like having anything that covers my breast area. (or binds for that matter haha)! But sounds like it would be something I would use otherwise!
Yeah I need something longer and I did have no issues with the spanx rolling up my thighs just down below my bra!
If you have any links of the tummy tank (general google search sent me a ton of different ones) that would be great!

Whatever you do, stay away from the Biggest Loser shapewear. It is stretchy but not strong IMO. I like the Assets much better when I wear shapewear. Sometimes you can even find them on the clearance rack at Target.

Thanks for posting... I have been considering buying something like Spanx for working out to help with holding my stomach in. I know I need something when I do jumping jacks lol

Oh, I love that they are found at Target too. Great to know!

So I went to walmart yesterday and found
    http://www.walmart.com/ip/Sweet-Nothings-Lace-Shapewear-High-Waist-Brief-Style-83352/17109096

Tried it on when I got home (had 2 kids under 3yrs old with me so trying to go into a fitting room would have be impossible!)

    I LOVE it!!
I have been wearing it all day and its so comfortable! I thought the straps would bother me and they dont. I like that you can wear your own bra (especially since I am nursing) and it doesn't bind my chest.

Thought I would share! I saw something similar through spanx brand on lane bryants website and it was $70 bucks! For $20 it was worth it! I am still going to get some compression underwear for working out and am going to look at the ones at target next week!
Just thought I would update! Am going to take pics to compare for you guys too!

First picture is no abdominal binder

Second picture is wearing the binder.

I defiantly notice it 1st in my belly area and then down in my pants where my apron hangs down (can tell by looking at my pants in both pictures) Its really comfortable and defiantly feels like its holding me in more but not to a point where I can't breathe!

thanks for posting! that is great. I was wondering if Wal-Mart had anything. I looked at Target today and they were out of the size I wanted to get (a size smaller than I'd need). But they are less than $20 for the high waist to mid thigh. Love what you have on though; it does a good job.

yeah I like how this one goes over my shoulders so I don't have to worry about it possibly sliding down or having to adjust it. Thanks so much!! I hope you find something u like!

(We are already going to start discussing a panniculectomy once I am down another 50lbs)

Is this where they remove excess skin? I'm really nervous that I'm not going to look "normal" once I've lost my weight. My tummy already kind of looks like a deflated balloon :( Did he say there are any exercises to help reduce excess skin?

Your skin once you have lost a substantial amount of weight will need about 2 years to get to where it will likely stay forever. Its said (least from the research I have done, and talking with a specialist) that once you reach close or at your goal weight and are just maintaining that you give yourself 2 years and the elasticity in your skin will return and tighten up a bit. Now with an abdominal apron (and the fact that I personally have been over weight since I was 9 *am 26*) will go up some *already have seen that* but will always hang down *depending on your severity of the apron, mine being a 2* and no amount of exercise/time will reduce that.
I know on the 30DS Jillian says reverse crunches will help with your lower tummy fat, but doesn't say anything about actual skin.
I hope I have helped sorta answer your questions, your best bet is to talk to either your doctor or get a referral to a specialist.
  • I have lost over 50 pounds this year and have to lose at least 30 more. There are a lot of Shapewear products on the market, HOWEVER the very best ones that I have found that are unparallelled in quality, comfort AND performance is from Ardyss International. I own several of there garments and they help me to achieve that smooth look. NO pudge, bumps or rolls whatsoever. INBOX ME and I can connect you to the right people that can help.
