Endo Dr tells me I'm losing to much weight. Discouraging.

I've been big all my life. In fact I use to weigh well over 500 lbs when I started this diet. Now that I am losing.. "I am losing to much weight." According to my endocrine doctor. I am a female, 6ft, 360 lbs.
I weighed 380 5 weeks ago. I now weigh 360 and still losing. 20 lbs in 5 weeks.
I am on a keto 'diet/lifestyle' and he just doesn't listen that I am eating. He thinks I am starving myself for one. He even threatened to call psychiatric helpers to take me to a hospital. I told him constantly I am eating and absolutely NOT starving myself. I even jokingly told him I would eat in front of him if he brought me the right foods.
He asked how many calories I ate a day and I told him, long as I get my fats, proteins and remain low on the carbohydrates I could essentially eat between 1100 calories and 5000 a day if I needed. Heck I ate 1900 - 2500+ calories during the Thanksgiving holiday and days after. Turkey, flax brownies, cheese, eggs, deviled eggs, mayo.. A ton of broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, tomatoes etc. Pepperonis with cheese melted over it, deep fried chicken, deep fried fish with.. Tons of pecans, walnuts, peanuts and yogurts occasionally!! I wasn't watching what I was eating and probably went well over, but still kept within my diets food limits. (I think he expected me to gain weight then?)
How do I introduce my endocrine doctor to the idea that losing 20 lbs in 5 weeks isn't the end of the world. I WOULD be worried if I lost over 25-30, but 20 seems reasonable. 4 lbs a week, while maintaining my diet and eating during Thanksgiving pretty much what I want.

4 lbs a week sounds pretty extreme to me. Do you track your calories? Do you know how much you are actually eating? The concern of an endocrinologist is nothing to sneeze at. He is worried about your health.0

I am no expert, but since you are very overweight the 20 pounds in 5 weeks doesn't seem too extreme.
The bottom line is you are an adult. If I knew I was eating enough food, and a doctor threatened to call psychiatric helpers to take me to a hospital, I would drop the doctor like a hot potato.0 -
I looked through your food diary for the last week and it is blank. It's a good idea to make sure you are tracking food intake (calories and macros). If your doctor is concerned it may be for a good reason. You might have a lot to lose, but you don't want to lose too fast.0

For awhile I was posting here, but got so overwhelming.
I've " over ate " within the last month foods I usually wouldn't. More of rather. I've been drinking more liquids than usual too. I can easily say with in yesterday of what I had eaten. I ate 1700ish calories with 140 fat, 80 or so protein and around 12 carbs. It's an estimate of which I am pretty close to.0 -
I quit posting my daily food intake on here for awhile because it go so mundane to post it every day. I started this diet May 11th 2013 if you want to go back and look at some days. About a month or so of that day and a bit after.0

I'm inclined to believe that "I could essentially eat between 1100 calories and 5000 a day if I needed" means that you eat closer to 1100 on most days, since eating closer to the higher number regularly would have drastically slowed (or stopped) your weight loss (especially since you tried to pass off 1900-2500 for Thanksgiving as some sort of big deal).

I don't think 4 lbs a week is at all too much for someone who weighs 360 lbs.
As long as you are netting the right amount of calories every day, you'll be fine.0 -
I am not a doctor, I don't even play one on TV. While I would normally say 4 lbs a week is too much; in some cases this is not necessarily true. I watch the biggest loser every year and those folks sometimes go 22 in a week. Understand they are exercising 8 hours a day. But when you have the amount of weight to lose that you do; I am not sure 20 over 5 weeks is to much; UNLESS, it is for calorie deficit only. I would hope you are starting an exercise program by now..0

I'd start logging. Then you take your food logs to the doctor with you and discuss what changes, if any, he'd like you to make.
Bottom line, you're seeing him for a reason. Either listen to what he says or get a second opinion.0 -
I'm not a doctor so my opinion means nothing, but I think at your weight 20 pounds in 5 weeks isn't crazy. It could be a problem if you keep losing 4 pounds a week. I would expect it to taper off to 3 pounds a week, then 2, etc. I can lose 4 pounds in a week without trying very hard and I'm only 150. Of course I couldn't do that for 5 weeks straight. Do you maybe have an underlying condition that he is worried about? I could see how losing that much might screw up hormone levels or other things in your body. Just a thought.0

It is not extreme at all for someone who weighs 350 pounds. Most doctors, even specialists, know next to nothing about nutrition and weight loss and because it's not an integral part of their medical education. They often know less than a well informed lay person.0 -
The reason we suggest eating enough is because at one point you'll stop losing (it's a natural part of weight loss). When that happens you are most likely going to restrict calories even further to keep losing weight. It's better to track intake now and ensure you are eating enough so when you stop losing others can look at what you've done to date and offer better suggestions.0

Being an endo, he probably sees a lot of eating disordered people. Start tracking, so you can show him exactly how you are not starving yourself. And as usmcmp said, you will want to know eventually where you stand calorie wise anyway, so might as well start now.0 -

This is part of the reason you are dropping so much weight each week... Your eating less to the point you are running a large calorie deficit..... At some point you will need to track accurately so you can see where you caloric intake and macro's truly are....0 -
As mundane as tracking what you eat seems, if you do that and bring the print off to your doctor 1) It shows him how much you are actually eating 2) Allows him to provide input if he feels the need.
Four pounds a week for a morbidly obese person does not seem excessive, however, don't think that it is just because you are eating the Atkins way that that is causing the weight loss. You are in a calorie deficit, and eventually you want to reduce that deficit and thus how fast you are losing. By this I don't mean stop Atkins since it seems to work for you, instead realize what is causing your success.0 -
I looked through your diary. It looks like you started in May at around 1700 calories. But by the time you got to August you were down to well under 1000 more days than not. I'm not surprised your doctor is concerned.
While I do think that a larger deficit is fine for someone who has lots of weight to lose, if your doctor thinks it's too fast then perhaps you should listen.0 -

To a doctor, losing weight that quickly is a warning sign so I can understand him/her being concerned.
I'd say start keeping an honest log again and next time you see him take it with you so he can see that you're not starving yourself.0 -
With all due respect; " guesstimating " means absolutely nothing....not as an argument with your doctor and even less here on MFP.
I know, you consider daily logging to be too mundane, but it is the only way you can develop a data base of calories consumed that will be able to give you the right information on which to base action when you get stuck or hopefully get to goal and plan to maintain.
Very few people ( and I am giving here the benefit of the doubt to someone unknown, because I personally don't know one single person ) have maintained on " guesstimation ".

At your age, weight, height your beginning loss is not that extreme at all. Why were you in the doc? Routine or are there issues that he was factoring in with your loss? You'd think he would be cheering you on, that's what my first reaction was. You know, I had a so-called specialist tell me my issues were "all in my head" and to go see physc....never went back to the idiot....saw diff docs that made me whole and well. Not one thought it was "al in my head".
So there. I prob would go see a diff endo doc if I was in your shoes. Good luck to you on your weight loss and keep doing what it is your doing because obviously its working for you!!0 -

I don't want to live by the scale, or posting everyday. That's why I stopped posting what I eat here. Sometimes I wish I did calculate what I ate a day to demonstrate to people assuming like you are I am going in such a low dangerous calorie deficit. I could post today what I ate to help?
I kind of don't care what the "true" macros are, I was so killed on calculating them everyday I got burnt out. Either I am over or I am close. The super low calorie intake is absurd to what I have ate. Sure you are right I 'should' track better but I got sick of a website owning a portion of my day with posting stuff.0 -

See this is where we will differ because I do not believe in guesstimating anything, I started 4 years ago (3 years in weight loss and 1 year of maintenance) at 560 lbs. and from day one I measured and weighed out portions and kept hand written journals to track my calorie intake and macros... I can go back to June 22nd of 2010 and tell you exactly what I ate that day and the amount... There is nothing mundane about it and it just becomes second nature to do it once you hit your groove.... I have 2 or 3 choices that I stick to for breakfast and lunch but my dinners are constantly changing and evolving because I love to cook so I try different things and recipes... but that doesn't give me a free pass from tracking. At some point you are going to have to do it so you might as well commit now and get in the groove so to speak....0 -

Was this weakness before or after you started dieting? Not eating enough can cause you to be so weak you can't walk. As someone pointed out there are days in your diary where you were around 1000 calories. Your BMR is roughly 2500. I'm 5'9" and weight 165 pounds. I can lose weight on 2000 calories, but I also track my intake so I know how much I'm eating.0 -
I see an endocronologist annually. I lost 16 lbs between my last visits. It did not go unnoticed. His focus is on all things hormonal. It is understandable that he would fear the loss is not deliberate and safe. Big changes stress the very glands he is trying to monitor or treat. So go back to tracking ~mundane or not.
You can't know with certainty that your weight loss is strictly a result of your diet if you cant say for sure what you have been eating on a regular basis. Better to track and be sure of why your results are so desireable. Your long term health is more important than quick weight loss.0 -

After I started the diet. Though...
Numb legs and weakness was due to using a product called Aquaphor on my psoriasis that ranges from my knees to the tops of my feet. (Both legs.) Almost immediately my legs were numb and itchy. I had to scrape this cream off it was unbearable. Next day numb from waist to toe. 5 days later to weak and went to a hospital. They didn't think anything was wrong.. Went to a different hospital again after 7 days because I just could NOT walk with out being in hold of a kitchen chair to the car.
Now after roughly 50 of diagnosis I am starting to get strength in my legs, but by no means normal.0
